3/12/07

Good Morning, it’s Monday, March 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Comcast and Sinclair reached a retransmission agreement in a nick of time on Friday, just a day before its current deal expired, representing consent agreements for about 3.4 million Comcast subscribers. Comcast said it will not involve cash, but rather shared advertising revenue, online co-marketing agreements and cross-promotional opportunities for both companies. The agreement, which expires March 1, 2011, further allows Comcast to carry multiple digital channels owned by Sinclair in the Richmond and Baltimore markets in addition to possible multicast channels in Comcast markets that may be used by the stations in the future. The negotiations were watched closely by the cable industry, as many smaller operators have had to surrender as much as 50 cents per subscriber, per month to renew retransmission deals. Comcast has said repeatedly that it will not pay for the privilege.

Tonight’s Premiere:
MNT:  IFL Battleground at 8p
FX: The Riches at 10p

Tonight’s Finale:
ABC:  Supernanny at 9p

~ BROADBAND & DIGITAL ~

In just one week, Cynopsis will be launching a brand new daily edition – Cyn opsis: Digital .  The edition will focus on the business of digital and broadband as it relates to the television industry and beyond.  It’s for anyone interested in how digital is rapidly becoming a major force in our industry – and even for those who believe digital is something of a phase and will never fully materialize to compete with linear television.  Any items you’ve become accustomed to seeing in this section of Cynopsis, will now be in Cyn Digital, as well as plenty of other news from the digital arena.  This new daily will be written by Wayne Karrfalt, Editor of Cyn opsis: Digital , who can be reached and is happy to accept press releases at [email protected] .    In the meantime, here’s a small bit of the Broadband & Digital news for today ….

NBC is preparing to expand its own fee-based digital downloads store, with a full complement of programming from across the NBC Universal and Telemundo spectrum. Pricing should be similar to what iTunes charges ($1.99 per show), but the network is keen to experiment with shorter times and broader packaging, such as the season pass offered for Sci Fi Network’s Battlestar Galactica on iTunes and Amazon.com.

The Weather Channel is creating a destination in the 3D virtual world Second Life. To promote its new extreme sports-themed show Epic Conditions, “Weather Island” will feature adventures like downhill skiing, mountain-biking and surfing, each activity showcasing an individual episode of the show. New episodes of Epic Conditions will premiere every Friday on Weather Island and weather.com/epic prior to airing on TWC.

CBS and the Writer’s Guild struck a deal covering initial compensation, minimums, residuals, pension plans, health coverage and writing credits for the writing of webisodes related to daytime soaps As The World Turns and The Young and the Restless. The pact covers the nine-episode L.A. Diaries web series, a spin-off based around characters from the two shows, which launched on CBS.com’s innertube two weeks ago.

Saudi Arabia’s local network operator Mobily has launched CNN International on 3G mobile phones in Saudi Arabia, marking this deal as the first time an international TV channel was offered to the country’s cellphone users.  This is also CNN Intl.’s first live foray into the Middle Eastern mobile market.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Music Choice has elevated Gary Susalis to Programming Manager where he will use his music industry contacts to continue in his efforts to increase the music video catalog and other content for the network across multiple platforms.

Jeff Weingarten has completed a purchase transaction for Washington, D.C.-based Interface Media Group (IMG), where he has been VP for the last 18 years. Jeff bought the thirty-year old television and video production company direct from its Founder/President Tom Angell.

Tom Karsch, EVP/GM of Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will leave his post in the next couple of weeks. Tom, who has been with TCM since the summer of 1995, told colleagues in a memo that the timing is right for him to leave and further stated that he “realized a lifetime professional goal” in supervising a network business. Before he goes, TCM management will review the network’s organizational structure and decide if there is a need to find a replacement for Tom.
