Cynopsis: Kids!

10/27/06

Good morning. It’s  Friday, October 27, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Many have waited for Godot, and Guffman for that matter, for some time and like them many of us have waited patiently each year just like the blanket-loving Peanuts character Linus.  Well, it’s finally here – the animated Halloween Peanuts special, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown airs tonight on ABC at 8pm, and it’s also celebrating its 40th birthday. The special premiered in 1966 on October 27 on CBS, who continued to air the special every Halloween for 34 years, until ABC acquired the rights beginning with the 2001 broadcast.  Created and written by Charles M. Schulz, executive produced by Lee Mendelson, and produced and animated by Bill Melendez.  Melendez also lent his vocal talents to Snoopy.  Peanuts is licensed and syndicated by United Features Syndicate, Inc., which is a subsidiary of EW Scripps Company.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fantasy, adventure/action and magic continues to be a successful ingredient for the movie industry for audiences of all ages. Look at the list of current and recent big box office winners and upcoming movies The Illusionist, The Prestige, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Eragon, The Golden Compass, The Spiderwick Chronicles and yes all the others I haven’t mentioned… and with that …

Walden Media has tapped director Mark Waters to head up its new movie about Harry Houdini, per The Hollywood Reporter.  Currently in development, the movie revolves around a 14-yr-old boy who discovers that he is related to Houdini and with that he sets out to investigate Houdini and what the magician might have been trying to keep secret.  There is no screenwriter attached to this original project as of yet.

Fox Animation has snapped up rights to Roald Dahl’s book The Fantastic Mr. Fox, says Variety.  The movie is expected to incorporate a numb er of different types of animation styles including stop-motion.  The book was adapted by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach.  Anderson will also director the movie and will serve as its producer with Scott Rudin.  This isn’t the first time The Fantastic Mr. Fox began to make its way to the big screen.  In 2004 Joe Roth and Revolution Studios acquired the rights, but then Revolution shut its doors giving Fox its opportunity.

MORE KIDS STUFF

AOL Music has launched The DL, its new online video music program hosted by standup comic Sara Schaefer.  The DL is a hybrid variety/blog program with interactive elements that features a mix of music, news and pop-culture commentary as well as interviews, video premieres and so on.  Each Thursday, The DL will take an inside look into artists including from Diddy to Regina Spektor to My Chemical Romance, as well as commentary from Schaefer, bloggers and industry experts.  Schaefer is a regular performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in NYC and pop-culture junkie, in a Ms. Pac-Man sort of way.  While not for kids, teens might just find their way here.  ( http://dl.aol.com/ )

MARKETING/LICENSING

Genius Products, LLC has inked a deal with Discovery Communications, Inc., to be the exclusive home entertainment distributor of Discovery Kids programming.  Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, which marks Discovery Kids’ first ever home entertainment distribution agreement, Genius will be the exclusive distributor in the US for Discovery Kids branded TV properties, including programming content from the Ready Set Learn! block on TLC and Discovery Kids Channel.

VIZ Media, LLC has tapped Licensing & Promotions Latin America to serve as its new representative for Zatch Bell! and Naruto in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia.  Licensing & Promotions Latin America represents King Features, Spellbound, Sulake, New Line Cinema and Rainbow among others. They will be an extension of VIZ Media in these markets and represent VIZ Media to local licensees, retailers and promotional partners.
