The Four Pillars of Successful Podcasting

A good podcast starts with compelling material – but according to Tyler Moody, VP & GM, WarnerMedia Podcast Network, that’s just the beginning. To launch a successful podcast, Moody says you need:

1.   Content: In a democratized media world content is still king. Maybe more so than ever. The product you deliver to your audience has to be top quality and deliver on its promise. People are taking steps to “opt in” to your show and it must deliver a good experience whether that’s being funny, suspenseful, informative… whatever your show is about it has to be good for the audience to keep coming back.
2.   Discovery: In older media days distribution would have been number 2, but now that podcast creators all submit their RSS feeds to the same places – Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, etc.– it’s more critical than ever to have a strong marketing and promotion plan to let audiences know your content exists, why they should get it, and how they can get it.
3.   Distribution: With there being many access points for the audience to get to their favorite podcasts, ease of use still matters. Apple making their podcast app native is a huge benchmark for the industry, yet there are many people that don’t know what that little purple button does. Yes… that’s the podcast app.
4.   Sales: Assuming you want to make money with your podcast (which might not be everybody’s goal), you are going to need to have a strong sales team to capitalize on the opportunity you create with steps 1-3.
