Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the media world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys. Today, meet Heather Moran, EVP, Programming & Strategy, NGC
What was your first leadership position?
I was working at Putt-Putt Golf and was promoted to "Birthday Party Captain." I still break out in a cold sweat whenever I see an ice-cream cake.
What did you learn from it?
I quickly learned that the best way to be effective is to build a team. It’s not about "you." It’s about "us" and what we can accomplish when we put our heads together and strive toward the same goal.
Tell us about a management decision you wish you’d handled differently.
As a fairly new manager, I had an employee who clearly wasn’t meeting her goals, she had a negative attitude and her staff was demoralized. I saw the signs, but I very much wanted to give her the chance to prove that she could turn it around. In working with her to establish clear, measurable goals, I wasn’t as direct with her as I should have been. I soft-pedaled the feedback. I realize now that having the tough conversations the ones where you strike right at the heart of the problem are the most useful ones, and the ones that have the most potential to evoke change. Otherwise, you aren’t giving the person a real chance. Be clear. Be consistent. And if it doesn’t work, make a change.
What do you look for when interviewing candidates?
PASSION. I love my job and want to work with people who love it as much (if not more) than I do. I want to hear what you love about TV. There’s this amazing clip from "Portlandia" where they binge-watch "Battlestar Galactica" and stay in the house for days because they can’t peel themselves away from the TV screen. I want to work with people who watch that scene and totally get it in their bones.
What is the one question you like to ask during an interview?
Why do you think "Friday Night Lights" is the greatest show in the history of television?
What is the type of answer that hurts the chances of an interviewee?
Anything that reveals a feeling of entitlement or an inability to be flexible.
