Good morning, it’s W3dnesday, September 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
A group of smaller ISPs announced they have discontinued trialing the controversial NebuAd web tracking technology including Bresnan Communications, Cable One and WideOpenWest. NebuAd, used to determine user preferences for purposes of targeted ad serving, became the target of a Congressional investigation into the buying and selling of user browsing data without customers’ permission or knowledge.
The Smashing Pumpkins are availing themselves of one of the hottest Xbox and PlayStation games to try to reclaim their former glory. The band will debut its new single G.L.O.W. exclusively in the newest edition of Activision’s Guitar Hero console game, marking the first time the smash game has previewed a new release before it’s made available on CD or iTunes. The new track, bundled with two other past hits 1979 and The Everlasting Gaze, will be available post-launch of Guitar Hero World Tour as a three-song downloaded content pack.
During Fashion Week next week Conde Nast’s Brides.com will feature guest blogs from Oscar De La Renta this year. The famous designer will provide readers with advice on bridal dress styles and fine jewelry as well as ideas for city, country and island weddings. Oscar himself is getting into the digital swing of things, redesigning his personal website in July to include e-commerce capabilities.
Multiplatform programmer ReelzChannel introduces a new weekend programming block on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 9 am – noon ET dubbed Reelzchannel Spotlight, designed to give movie fans the skinny on what movies to watch each weekend in theaters, DVD, PPV and VOD.
Speaking of movies, Don LaFontaine, the king of Hollywood trailer voiceovers, died Monday following complications from an ongoing illness. He recorded nearly 5,000 movie trailers and 350,000 commercials, programs, files and other presentations. Check out his website for a nice overview of his storied career.
It seems YouTube is finding a way to make itself useful to Google after all. Google is adding video as a free add-on to the B2B web-based Google Apps suite allowing employees to upload corporate training, demo or conference videos then invite others to view it securely.
Mobile app developer 3rd Dimension, Inc. expanded its mobile traffic cam iPhone App to several new cities. The free app, which integrates with municipal traffic cameras in local department of transportation offices, now helps you avoid traffic jams in Detroit, Hartford, Houston, Indianapolis, Kansas City, Knoxville, Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. The application is also available online.
Next Monday Wilmington, N.C. will become the town where the digital TV transition officially begins. WWAY (ABC), WSFX-TV (FOX), WECT (NBC), WILM-LP (CBS) and W51CW (Trinity Broadcasting) have agreed to act as a test case 5 months before the national Feb. 17 switchover to help the FCC access whether or not further educational efforts are needed before the big day. The city’s municipal website has been posting updates and information about converting.

The CW hired mobile content ad company Myxer and OMD-Los Angeles to launch a fully integrated web-to-mobile program in support of the premiere of 90210. The campaign, the first to feature Myxer’s new “Red Carpet” toolkit, will offer consumers custom ringtones, videos, images on the mobile side as well as a set of widgets to enable distribution of the content on blogs and social networking pages.
Turner’s Nascar.com has signed Dodge and Gillette to two separate online sponsorships to promote the companies’ consumer outreach initiatives through custom microsites and targeted media elements.
~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~
The initial results are in for Nielsen and Integrated Media Measurement Inc.‘s (IMMI) new electronic Out-Of-Home TV viewing ratings system measuring usage on campuses, in hotels, at work as well as bars and restaurants. In the month of July, FOX’s House and ESPN’s Home Run Derby generated the most out-of-home viewing among primetime broadcast and cable respectively, both attracting 570,000 out-of-home viewers. The special/sports event with the highest number of out-of-home viewers was the Olympics Opening Ceremony on NBC, with 1.1 million viewers.
The results of CBS-owned TV.com‘s Most Anticipated New Shows user-generated poll are also in and Fox is the big winner. J.J. Abram’s latest show Fringe won for most anticipated drama while Family Guy spin off The Cleveland Show won for most anticipated comedy.
Tribune Interactive made several new hires and organizational changes to improve content and search engine optimization efforts on its sites. The new structure, announced by Marc Chase, Tribune Interactive’s President, suggests major changes are on the way at Tribune sites including LAtimes.com, the #2 newspaper site in the U.S. in terms of online audience. The appointments include:
- Rob Barrett, formerly SVP & GM for Tribune Interactive at the Los Angeles Times, becomes EVP/Programming for TI, based in Los Angeles
- Julie Anderson, formerly VP/Interactive at the Orlando Sentinel, will serve as VP/Content Integration for TI
- Tom Davidson will serve as VP/Content for TI’s Baltimore, Hartford, Allentown and Hampton Roads markets

Business Affairs executives Pam Schechter and Crissy Thomas-Taylor were both promoted to Vice President for the Universal Television Group, reporting to Beth Roberts, EVP/Entertainment Business Affairs, Digital and New Business Development. Rafael Gomez-Cabrera and Rajal Lele will also join the group as Directors.
New York-based Travel Ad Network hired former AOL Travel executive Jeffrey John DeKorte as VP/Product Development.
Independent digital ad agency Mediasmith upped Michael Rosenfeld to VP and Mark MacQuarrie to CFO. Michael will continue to head up business development and Mark will oversee economic strategy and financial, corporate and media operations and administrative functions. Both will report to CEO David L. Smith in San Francisco.
PBS Kid Spout hired Tom Alexander to become SVP/Marketing, reporting to network President Sandy Wax at its Philadelphia headquarters beginning yesterday. He will be Responsible for leading all marketing and digital media efforts for Sprout.
Google’s new Chrome browser is out for Windows users and it feels very much like browser made by a search company. It’s fairly straightforward and easy to use. Instead of having to go to Google or use a search bar simply type what you’re looking for into the address bar and the browser will suggest popular or past visited sites and pages. Chrome also features some handy memory tools. Open a new tab and a collection of your most visited sites pop up with recent bookmarks and closed tabs. There’s some fairly obvious tools missing on this initial version (ie: bookmark managing would be nice.) But the important thing to note for Explorer users here is that Chrome considerably faster than IE. Bells and whistles are a matter of personal preference but speed is what really matters in a browser. Whether Google can gain ground on the competition remains to be seen. If Google integrates Chrome into Android and makes it the preferred browser for mobile devices, they could really have something here.
