CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   After confirming the death of its controversial Beacon advertising program (which mined data about users’ purchases from their personal feeds), Facebook introduced a new tie-up with Nielsen to improve effectiveness of advertising on the platform. Launching this week with a set of test partners, Nielsen Brandlift – the first product of the partnership – uses opt-in polls on Facebook’s homepage to measure consumer attitudes and purchase intent from display ads that have appeared on the site. Facebook has quietly begun to capture a larger share of the total display ad market in the U.S., registering a 14.7% market share in August according to Nielsen, up from just a 1.8% share in Jan. 2009. Overall, the online ad spend on top social network and blogging sites increased 119% year-over year, from approximately $49 million in Aug. 2008 to approximately $108 million in Aug. 2009.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   The BBC unveils plans to spend at least $41 million on kid’s programming over the next three years!  Additionally, BBC’s will up its spending for BBC Two dramas by 50%, the channel also becoming the home for BBC Films.   The news came in a speech by Jena Bennett, Director/BBC Vision at BBC Vision Forum, an annual event for in-house and indie producers.  Bennett explained the move comes in response to the recommendation from the BBC Trust that BBC strengthen its original kid’s programming output in the UK and explained, “This additional funding, derived from efficiency savings, once again recognizes the particular pressures facing this genre and it will be used to reinforce the creative strength of BBC Children’s, and help the CBBC channel maintain its position.”  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM THE WALTER KAITZ FOUNDATION

“Champions are made from something they have deep inside them  a desire, a dream, a vision.”

Those words from Muhammad Ali capture the sense of purpose that has made diversity part of the business DNA for the 2009 Walter Kaitz Foundation Diversity Champions. Congratulations to Comcast Corp. and Turner Broadcasting System. Please join us at cable’s pre-eminent fundraising event to honor them, and to unite behind our industry’s commitment to diversity. With your support, we’re all champions.

MAKE A STATEMENT. MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

This day in History:  1952 – Richard Nixon gave his “Checkers Speech”. At the time he was a candidate for the office of U.S. Vice President.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   American viewers were first introduced to the idea of the “TV Novel” with the import of The Forsythe Saga in 1969.  What was the first American made TV Novel or miniseries?   QBVII produced for US TV by Screen Gems, debuted April 1974 (Rich Man Poor Man aired in 1976, Roots in January 1977). And for those guessing Peyton Place, it aired as a primetime soap, not a miniseries.  Kudos to: Anne Kissel Elliot-ET Consulting/Palm City; Joel Gibbs-Joel Gibbs Productions/Philadelphia; Paul Gluck-LiveuUpdate MultiMedia/Ardmore; John Kukla-KDFW/Dallas; John Amato-KTTV/”Good Day L.A.”/Los Angeles; Evan Weinstein-The Amazing Race/LA

Today’s Trivia Question:  This feature film was seen on television for the first time in November 1976 and at the time delivered one of the highest ratings ever in the history of television.  NBC reportedly paid $5 million for the rights to a single broadcast.  What was the film?      (Email
with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
