After confirming the death of its controversial Beacon advertising program (which mined data about users’ purchases from their personal feeds), Facebook introduced a new tie-up with Nielsen to improve effectiveness of advertising on the platform. Launching this week with a set of test partners, Nielsen Brandlift – the first product of the partnership – uses opt-in polls on Facebook’s homepage to measure consumer attitudes and purchase intent from display ads that have appeared on the site. Facebook has quietly begun to capture a larger share of the total display ad market in the U.S., registering a 14.7% market share in August according to Nielsen, up from just a 1.8% share in Jan. 2009. Overall, the online ad spend on top social network and blogging sites increased 119% year-over year, from approximately $49 million in Aug. 2008 to approximately $108 million in Aug. 2009.

Spike TV
is launching a new online series as a companion to its Ultimate Fighter franchise. “The Ultimate Fighter: The Aftermath,” hosted by Amir Sadollah, will be a video roundtable discussion about each on-air episode that precedes it, with the fighters that competed in an elimination bout on hand to talk about what went on, both inside and outside of the ring.
Recent carriage agreements with Belo stations in Dallas (WFAA) and Phoenix (KTVK/KASW) have pushed the penetration of MGM & Weigel Broadcasting’s digital multiplex network This TV up over the 80% mark, the company announced.

Sony Music Entertainment‘s catalog will be the first major record label to provide content for the New York-based indie music retail site Amie Street, the site that prices MP3 tracks based on how popular they are. Before you go there looking for huge bargains, there will be some minimums put in place. New and catalog Sony songs will be available at set prices of $.69, $.99 and $1.29 per song, based on how they’ve already sold.
A political action committee often accused of taking itself a bit too seriously is lightening up. To sign up new members for its health care reform push, is featuring a new tongue-in-cheek mock PSA from the Funny Or Die crew including Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm (Mad Men) and Olivia Wilde (House.)  “People are saying a lot of mean things about Health Insurance companies and their executives, and it’s got to stop.”
The San Francisco-based community funded journalism program Spot.Us is expanding to the LA area in a new collaboration with USC’s Annenberg’s School of Journalism. espouses a “crowd-sourced” model that focuses on local, long-form reporting. Visitors to the site may choose to donate money to support investigative reporting into an issue of their choice. Once completed, the reports are solicited for distribution through local media outlets.
Online video greeting card start-up SpiritClips, founded by “Rudy” director Rob Fried, redesigned its homepage improved its filmcard composer interface to include a selection of over 100 covers. 


Ad insertion and reporting specialist Panache, whose media clients include MTV and Fox, unveils a new advanced interface this morning that simplifies the complex process of measuring the effectiveness of an online ad campaign. The Panache Ad IQ solution captures stats related to video player and ad interaction, ad exposure and engagement then creates a simple to read bar chart publishers can use to measure effectiveness across location and demo. “The interface can be also be used to compare to different creative, so publishers can see what is working, then use one of our other products to dynamically swap out the ads,” says Steve Robinson, co-founder and CEO of Panache.
The Ovation cable network joined the Google TV Ads platform allowing advertisers to utilize the Dish Network-based auction style system to buy time on the network. Beginning Oct. 2, clients logging on to the Google TV Ads interface will be able to bid on Ovation inventory across all day parts. Ovation can currently be seen in about 33 million homes.
USA Network has come up with online affiliate ad program to get affiliates to promote the premiere of its new series White Collar on Oct. 23. Affiliates that drive local ad sales will be able to redeem points towards online shopping of “White Collar” branded merchandise.  


Glam Media
launched a new real time Application Platform for brand advertisers and media partners enabling the aggregation, moderation and distribution of real-time conversations taking place on social media sites, including Twitter, FriendFeed, Facebook and other photo and video sharing platforms. Embeddable “Tinker” Application Widgets show real-time conversations that can be organized by both topic and authors, enabling publishers to bring customized and interactive conversations streams to their own sites. Live moderation and filtration tools built into Tinker enable media companies to surface and manage conversation streams relevant to their online audience. For example, uses Tinker here to moderate conversations around number of news events as part of its ongoing healthcare coverage. Tinker Stream Ads, available in standard IAB units, are composed of aggregated and filtered real-time social media conversations.
Getty Images and Disney/ABC Television Group signed a deal to make Getty Images the exclusive worldwide third-party digital distributor of all imagery owned by the group, including the properties ABC Daytime, ABC Entertainment Group, ABC News, ABC Family, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Hyperion Publishing and SOAPnet.


Rest assured, the fall TV line-up is still important to most Americans as an overwhelming 81% of individuals polled by Comcast‘s TV Pulse survey said they plan to watch primetime TV this fall and nearly 60% stated that the fall TV season is important to them. Dramas and Comedies proved to be the genres they were most interested in. Meanwhile, time shifting and multiplatform viewing is becoming a much more common way to catch up with the programming: 78% of individuals under 35, and more than 50% of those over 35 also plan to use technologies such as video-on-demand, DVRs and the internet to watch their favorite fall primetime programs this year.

Cablevision announced that it has deployed a new remote DVR scheduling and management feature across its entire service area, for customers who subscribe to both DVR for iO TV and Optimum Online. The new service, accessible through the consumer portal, allows customers to fully manage their home DVRs – including finding and recording shows and managing stored content – from any PC or Mac.
The latest version of the Facebook-integrated PhotoList app is out for the iPhone, enabling users to email multiple pictures, view photolist pics over the web, and transfer photos to and from your computer via the standard File Transfer Protocol (FTP). There’s also a screensaver, which cycles through all of your pictures.


Gaming entertainment site hired former Wonderland Sound and Vision creative executive Andy Shapiro as VP/Creative Development. Andy will focus on developing, packaging and producing episodic series in partnership with game developers and publishers.

Yahoo unveiled some new search features designed to improve productivity and relevancy, and while the results aren’t nearly as snazzy as Bing there are some cool features that make it quite an improvement over Yahoo’s previous search engine. The most noticeable change is a new left column that pops up allowing users to filter results by “Search Monkey” content providers, or to click on concepts that may (or may not) relate to what you’re looking for. For instance, a quick search of “Heroes” pulls up links to the NBC home page for the show, as well as Wikipedia, IMDB and Heroes pages. Below them “search assist” suggestions appear, including “gym class,” “tv show,” and “city of …” (City of Heroes happens to be a superhero-themed online role playing game from NCsoft.) The new Search Pad feature, accessible in the left hand corner of the screen, helps you track sites and make notes on your travels. It automatically remembers the sites you visit and allows you to jot down notes, save, or share the sites you’ve compiled.
