Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 22, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.
According to Fast Affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research, ABC won the night on Monday night among A18-49 with an overall 5.9/16 from 8-11pm. CBS’ premiere Monday drew a 5.6/15 overall in the demo ranking #2, and UPN’s premiere evening avg’d a 1.4/4 in the adult demo, ranking #6. However, for UPN, among the female demos, the average for the night was a 2.3/6 W18-49 and a 2.5/7 W18-34. NBC led the night at 8pm with Fear Factor’s 4.0/12, while CBS and ABC tied with a 3.3/10. CBS’ Still Standing at 8p avg’d a 3.1/10, while the series premiere of Listen Up picked up at 830p with a 3.5/10. The Benefactor on its second outing on ABC averaged a 3.3/10, picking up considerably from last week’s 2.3/7. 7th Heaven on the WB earned solid marks from women and teens – 3.6/10 W18-49, 3.8/15 Teens 12-17, and female teens in particular with a 6.1/24. At 9pm the first hour of the football game averaged a 7.1/18 A18-49 for ABC, while CBS’s season premieres of Raymond (5.9/15) and 2-1/2 Men (5.5/131) ranked #2 for the hour. NBC’s Las Vegas drew a solid 5.0/12. At 10p CBS was in front with the premiere of CSI Miami’s 7.9/19. The second outing of NBC’s LAX averaged a less stunning 3.1/8, down from last week’s 5.1/13. The football game on ABC drew an 8.0/22 A18-49 rating from 9:07p to 11:59p, adn as you might expect led in all key male demos.
Tonight’s Premieres: ABC: Lost [p], The Bachelor [p] at 9p CBS: CSI: New York [p] at 10p NBC: Law & Order [p] at 9p UPN: Top Model [p], Veronica Mars [p] WB: Smallville [p], The Mountain [p] Outdoor Life Network: Fearless [preview] at 7pm (this show will air in its regular time period, Tuesdays at 9pm, beginning next week.)
The rumors of Method & Red’s early demise may no longer be just rumors. Variety is reporting the show is official dead in the water, and you’ll notice tonight’s lineup on Fox includes back to back Bernie Macs from 9-10p, not the usual Method & Red at 930p. Nothing official has been provided by Fox.
Casting / Development / Production:
ABC has ordered 10 additional episodes of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, bring a episode count for the season up to 23. The show makes its season premiere this Sunday evening at 8pm with a 2-hour ep, which, according to sources, is guaranteed to draw a few tears.

A midseason replacement pilot for Fox, Spellbound (Warner Bros. TV), has cast Barry Bostwick and Cristine Baranski. This is the modern day Bewitched, sideways. He’s a witch, she’s the mortal. Bostwick and Baranski play the witch’s parents.
Emilio Estevez will star in the comedy project Long Island Sound from Danny Jacobson (Mad About You), which has received a pilot order from ABC, and will be produced by Tannenbaum Co. Estevez plays a father/husband who becomes an entrepreneur after losing his engineering job, according to Hollywood Reporter.

The ever prolific Jerry Bruckheimer has tossed yet another crime drama into the frey – this one has already received a put pilot commitment from CBS, per Variety. Intermedia Advertising Group’s Top Ten Most Effective New Ads for new campaigns airing the weeks of Aug 30-September 12, 2004. The list is ranked by viewer’s ability to recall the new ads and their associated products and brands. The Recall Score is the percentage of TV viewers who within 24 hours are able to remember the brand of the ad they saw during normal TV viewing. The scores are then indexed against the mean score for all ads during the time period to create the Recall Index; 100 is Average. For example, with a Recall Index of 203, the top-ranked Victoria’s Secret spot was recalled twice the average new ad during the period. VH1’s Surreal Life was the first to bring us the rocky “relationship” between Public Enemy’s Flavor Flav and the Rocky IV star Brigitte Nielsen (and Sylvester Stallone’s ex) as she slapped the rapper (and was slapped right back). VH1 saw an opportunity as the two continued to flirt with each other. The result is an unnamed spinoff reality series filming them as they travel cross-country and end up in Las Vegas, where (lo and behold) Brigitte’s real life fiancee Mattia Disse will also compete for her affections. The show is reportedly scheduled to begin taping on October 4
Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit Films (FUF) inked an exclusive production agreement with Paramount Home Entertainment to produce urban movies intended for the DVD market with multimillion-dollar production budgets. FUF co-owner Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere are set to produce romantic and urban comedies, dramas and action movies. Latifah will appear in the Paramount DVDs. Under the agreement, any of the DVD-intended Paramount pictures cannot exceed a $5 million production budgets for each one. Important to note…This agreement is only for DVD premiere movie projects.
New York-based Northstar Media purchased the global broadcast rights to the Isle of Wight 2004 Channel 4 music event, from UK production company CC-Lab Productions. The 2x90m HD films feature such notables as David Bowie and The Who performed at June’s Isle of Wight Festival.
Correction: The A18-49 rating for the Emmy Awards program on Sunday evening on ABC, 8-11pm, delivered a 4.7/12. The number in yesterdays edition, 3.5/10, is the A18-34 rating.
Cable net IFC has signed a two year output deal with Fox Searchlight, giving IFC the first network window for Searchlight films including Napoleon Dynamite, Bend It Like Beckham, I Heart Huckabees and Antwone Fisher, according to Variety.
What would you do? Today’s syndicated episode of The Dr. Phil Show (King World distributes, produced by Paramount Domestic Television) includes an interview with Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond) and reportedly makes promotional references to Dr. Phil’s primetime two hour special tonight on CBS, which also includes Heaton, Dr. Phil’s Primetime Special: Family First. According to today’s Variety, NBC affiliates KNBC, WMAQ and WRC, who all carry Dr. Phil in the daytime, will make some edits in today’s show, wiping out the promotions for the primetime special. The affiliates are taking exception to promoting a show on a competing network, and a special that in its second hour is running head to head opposite NBC’s season premiere of Law & Order. Were your station in a similar situation with a syndicated show promoting a primetime special on the competition, what would you do? Let me know,
, and check back here tomorrow for a summary of your responses.
Great American Country (GAC) has reached a multi-year agreement with DirecTV which will add 6.5 million new subscribers to GAC, bringing the network’s total carriage to 34 million as of September 21.
At first blush, this may sound a little … odd, new wave or even generic. But think about it a sec. Discovery HD Theatre will launch a new 23 episode series on September 27 called Sunrise Earth. Shot with no music, no voices, just ambient sounds of nature waking up, each ep features real time sunrises from various locations around North America, all in HDTV. Locations include Yellowstone Park, the Everglades, northern Vermont and Maine, and San Francisco. The series airs weekday mornings at 7am.
