Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, September 12, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
News Corp. COO Peter Chernin told a Reuters reporter that he too would like to see more flexible pricing options from Apple, although he described the relationship as “perfectly good” otherwise. Fox will make new episodes of shows such as 24 and Prison Break available on iTunes following their premieres. Mr. Chernin also said News Corp. is not in discussions with Yahoo to swap MySpace for a piece of the company, despite a recent comment by Rupert Murdoch to that effect.
Nickelodeon’s interactive-themed iCarly is a hit online with icarly.com registering almost 300,000 unique visitors during its premiere week. iCarly videos produced 1.1 million streams on TurboNick during the week from 9/3-9/9, with two-thirds, or 721,000 streams, taking place over the weekend. Nick.com launched an iCarly “Webisode Wardrobe” game on Sept. 6, which ended up as the number-one game for the week with 575,000 game plays.
AccuWeather.com launched a new RSS service providing syndicated feeds of current conditions, forecasts, news, entertainment and weather-themed blogs. Zip code-based weather conditions are available from nearly 3 million US and international locations.
Antonio Gonzalez AKA “DJ Satisfaction” of Camden, NJ has been crowned the winner of “The Score,” VH1‘s online search for the “next great Hip Hop Producer.” Close to 8,000 entries were submitted on the site for consideration. Hip Hop performances and additional content will be featured on VH1 on demand, VH1 mobile and VH1.com leading up to the broadcast of this year’s VH1 Hip Hop Honors broadcast on Oct. 8 at 10 pm ET.
The series premiere of Fox’s docu-drama Welcome to Nashville is now available at no charge to viewers and fans across multiple portals and websites including FOX.com, AOL.com, IGN.com, TV.com, Comcast.net and TVGuide.com.
DIRECTV’s weekly half-hour original series Project MyWorld takes its second season to New Zealand and Australia starting October 1 at 6p with an encore airing at 9p on the satellite TV service provider’s original entertainment channel, The 101. During season two, a new “adventure girl” joins the other two as all three travel in search of love, adventure and the top independent bands through their MySpace connections. All three also contribute to the show’s website on MySpace at www.myspace.com/projectmyworld.
Facebook is considering bringing in partners to help raise additional capital, according to the Kara Swisher’s BoomTown blog. The site currently has about 40 million members and is expected to earn $150 million this year in ad revenue. Yahoo reportedly offered just under $1 billion for the company last year, followed by a rumored multi-billion dollar bid from Microsoft.
The Weather Channel Interactive acquired WeatherBonk.com, a weather site that incorporates web 2.0 features such as user generated video and mashups combining Google Maps with a variety of other content. TWCi also gets the similarly structured GolfBonk.com and SkiBonk.com as part of the deal.
The NAB lashed out against Microsoft, Google and other tech companies who plan to produce and market portable broadband devices that operate on unused “white space” digital spectrum. Broadcasters worry the devices won’t be able to distinguish between used and unused space and will end up interfering with digital broadcast signals. The NAB began running TV and print ads this week to urge viewers to let their Congress know of their concerns regarding the issue.

While spot TV ad spending declined by .3% to $72.59 billion over the first 6 months of 2007, online ad spending continued to rise according to TNS Media Intelligence, albeit at a decreased rate. Internet display advertising registered a 17.7% increase to $5.52 billion during the first half, down from an 18.9% growth rate last year at this time.
ComScore introduced a new service that measures blog and social networking audiences. Produced in collaboration with Federated Media Publishing, the comScore Conversational Media Report measures more than 140 sites, implementing a custom weighting and projection systems across a range of topics and interests. The report will be available as part of ComScore’s MyMetrix interface.

Todd Stanley joined New York-based Digitas as SVP/Marketing, reporting to N.Y. President Joanne Zaiac. Todd worked for Lowe Worldwide in Toronto for a decade before joining Digitas.
Nielsen announced three senior-level changes to its television ratings executive ranks.
- Catherine Herkovic will become SVP and Managing Director, National Television Client Services, overseeing client services and sales.
- Kevin Svenningsen will become SVP and Managing Director, Local Television Client Services, leading Nielsen’s local television ratings service.
- Tom Ziangas will become SVP/Nielsen Sports, overseeing new products, sales, client service and business strategy.
Alex Baxter, former head of sales & marketing at Wenner Media and Dow Jones, was hired as VP/Sales at mobile advertising company 4INFO. Alex will oversee the company’s ad sales team and supervise mobile ad sales strategy and ad partnerships.
JumpTV named Bill Stephen as Head of Global Ad Sales. Bill will lead the IPTV company’s in-stream and on-site ad sales team, reporting to President and COO Kaleil Isaza Tuzman.
Sometimes bad is good, but in this case it could have even been better. Britney Spears’ awful performance on the MTV Video Music Awards drove MTV.com to new heights. The site registered 4.7 million unique visitors on Monday, two million more than the daily record of 2.6 MM uniques set the day before. A total of 17.4 million streams were generated via MTV.com on Monday, and another 4 million views occurred using MTV’s syndicated video player, as word spread about the train wreck. What’s ironic about MTV’s success is that it is actually costing the company money instead of making it money. MTV ordered YouTube to pull the performance from its site. Instead, many are finding it via a “sponsored link” on Google. (According to Google Trends, “Britney Spears VMA video” ranked as the #22 most popular search on Monday). Had MTV participated in YouTube’s commercial video program, Google would have paid the network half the revenue it generated from ads embedded with the clip.
