Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 7, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Southern Star Singapore, Southern Star Entertainment (Australia) and Nord Deutscher Rundfunk (Germany) unveil their US$9million international co-production of A gURLs wURLd (26×30), a tween-targeted live-action series supported by the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) and Screen Australia, Australia’s film and TV agency.  The series will be distributed by Endemol Worldwide Distribution, and is set to premiere on ARD Network (Germany) and Channel Nine (Australia).  Shot in part on location in Singapore, A gURLs wURLd is a multi-platform property that will feature unique content and virtual communities online for fans around the world created by Southern Star Singapore and Southern Star Entertainment.  The series revolves around three teen girls, one each from Australia, Germany and Singapore, who become friends while attending school in Singapore.  At the end of the term the girls return home and find that through technology they can transport them via a chat room portal to one another’s home and thus a range of adventures.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon picks up a second season (20 episodes) of the stop-motion animated series Glenn Martin, DDS, from Michael Eisner‘s Tornante Animation.  The series, which airs on Nick at Nite, features a star-studded voice-over cast, including Kevin Nealon, Catherine O’Hara and Judy Greer as well as host of special guest stars.  Developed for Nick at Nite by Michael Eisner, who co-created the series along with Alex Berger and Eric Fogel, Glenn Martin, DDS is produced by Steven Cohen and Noel Bright for Tornante Animation, a division of The Tornante Company.

This fall the qubo welcomes five new series to its lineup.  All five series will air on qubo Channel, with two of the shows also airing on qubo’s TV blocks on Ion Televisions, NBC and Telemundo.  Qubo.com is also offering a range of new activities including games based on the Zimmer Twins.

  • Shelldon – the series makes its world TV premiere Friday, October 16 at 3:30p on qubo on Ion TV. The series also airs Saturdays at 8:30a in Spanish on qubo on Telemundo and 12Noon on qubo on NBC.  Shelldon will also makes its debut on qubo Channel on qubo Channel on Saturday, October 31 at 12:30p, where it will also air on Sundays.  Shelldon is produced by Shellhut Entertainment and is distributed by Classic Media
  • Rescue Heroes – this new series is set to being airing Monday, October 26 on qubo Channel weekdays and weekends.  The Rescue Heroes series is produced by Nelvana.
  • New series already airing as part of qubo’s compliment of TV offerings include: Willa’s Wild Life, which recently made its US premiere, is airing regularly on qubo on Ion TV, qubo on NBC, qubo on Telemundo and the qubo Channel; The new animated Pippi Longstocking series has joined qubo Channel where it airs several times a day on Saturdays and Sundays; Pearlie made its US premiere this fall on quo Channel, where it airs Saturdays and Sundays.  Nelvana also produces this series.
  • New episodes of Babar debut this fall on qubo’s broadcast programming blocks and qubo Channel; new eps of Jane and the Dragon are airing on the broadcast blocks; and 3-2-1 Penguins! has moved over to qubo Channel.

MORE MIPCOM

ITV Studios and Mattel ink a deal under which ITV Studios will develop several of Mattel’s family-targeted board-game brands into TV formats and multi-platform properties.  Mattel games featured under the agreement include Scrabble, Pictionary and Uno.  Additionally, ITV Studios Global Entertainment will distribute the content worldwide.

BBC Worldwide Channels commissions a new live-action preschool series Penelope K, By The Way (25×12), the first original production for the international CBeebies channel.  Developed by Australia’s Blink Films the property was selected earlier this year from 100 submissions as part of a local production initiative in Australia.  Produced by Blink Films in association with Freehand, Penelope K, By The Way will debut on CBeebies in Australia next year, followed by CBeebies in the UK and then rollout around the world.  The series revolves around Penelope K and the Information Station she runs, which is a place where one goes to find answers to questions.  Penelope K and her friends help collate information and provide answers to inquiring minds.

FlickerLab launches its newest K8-12-targeted animated series, The Wild Life (26×5), at Mipcom.  The story driven series, which debuted earlier this month on TV2 (Denmark), is designed to teach kids about climate change and is produced using FlickerLab’s real time animation software, Go.  Each episode is comprised of a three minute story introducing a theme, followed by a two minute animated Climate Cartoon on that theme.  Additionally, viewers can use FlickerLab’s Animtoon animation software to create and share their own Climate Cartoons, the best of which will be shown with customized introductions by the series characters.  There is also a corresponding website for the show that features a range of information, games and activities and other interactive elements.   FlickerLab plans to expand The Wild Life into a longer form series (40×11) with production set to begin in fall 2010.

The Jim Henson Company completes a new broadcast deal with Discovery Kids Latin America to for the new CGI-animated preschool series Dinosaur Train (80×11).  The new deal follows on the heels of deals for the series with Nickelodeon (Australia), Selecta Vision (Spain), Al Jazeera (Middle East), TVO and TFO (Canada), Knowledge (British Columbia) and NRK (Norway).  Dinosaur Train premiered last month in the US on PBS Kids.

Baby Antonio’s Circus, a new live-action preschool series, is set to premiere this December across all JimJam feeds.  Produced by The Wiggles Productions (the folks behind The Wiggles series), Baby Antonio’s Circus is a series of three-minute shorts featuring Baby Antonio and his pals showing off their circus skills.  JimJam is a preschool channel and joint venture between Hit Entertainment and Chello Zone.

Fitz Roy Media teams up with Magic Lantern Entertainment to develop and produce a slate of new Daktari Park programming content, including a feature film, TV series and direct-to-DVD titles, which is based on the African adventures and experiences of wildlife veterinarian Dr. Sue Hart.  Production on the kid and family targeted entertainment content is set to begin in 2010.  The hope is to introduce a new generation to Hart’s work and life.  Earlier this year Fitz Roy entered into a deal with London-based Daktari Productions granting it online, movie, TV/DVD and consumer productions rights.

Digital Rights Group (DRG) picks up the distribution rights to the new kids and family series The Jo Frost Project (6×60, working title), which of course is hosted by kids/parenting expert Jo Frost (Supernanny).  DRG holds the worldwide distribution rights to the series and format (excluding the US and UK), which it is showcasing at Mipcom under its C4i brand.  Produced by Outline Productions in association with Jo Frost for Channel 4 (UK), the series will air in the UK early next year.  The Jo Frost Project explores issues and challenges currently facing kids and parents, with each episode featuring two extreme family stories, experts and surveys with the aim of serving as a call to action for parents.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Upper Deck Company enters into a multi-year licensing deal with Hit Entertainment to produce a line of Thomas & Friends trading cards.  Under the pact, Upper Deck will create a trading card line that will include stand-up trading cards and sticker trading cards based on the preschool property.  The first Thomas & Friends trading cards will be available at retail from late 2010 as part of Thomas’ 65th anniversary year.

Australia’s ABC Commercial inks a DVD license deal with Warner Home Video UK for the animated HD preschool series The WotWots (52×10).  The WotWots is produced by Pukeko Pictures, c0-founded by Richard Taylor and author/illustrator/producer Martin Baynton, and made at Taylor’s Weta Workshop.

Varsity, a cheerleading and dance team apparel company, names Cookie Jar Group as its exclusive licensing agent and entertainment partner beginning in 2010.  Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG), Cookie Jar’s licensing arm, will handle all worldwide licensing for Varsity, while Cookie Jar Entertainment will develop original programming (live-action and animated) for the brand.

In other news, Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG), the North American licensing agent for Lucha Libre USA and the Lucha Libre AAA league, have appointed Playmates Toys as the master toy licensee for the wrestling brand.  Under the agreement, Playmates Toys will create a line of toys and collectible items inspired by the Mexican wrestling phenomenon.  Featured items will include the first official Lucha Libre AAA toy and collectible line (e.g. action figures, role-play masks, play sets) for North America set for release in fall 2010.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Andrea Strauss is upped to VP/Nickelodeon Consumer Insights.  Strauss, who had been Senior Director of the group, will continue to serve as the in-house expert on the lifestyles and attitudes of kids/teens/young adults/parents.  Previously, Straw was a Senior Consumer Analyst, Grey Advertising and Manager/Advertising Research, Norman Hecht Research.  Congrats Andrea!

Meredith Corporation ups Carey Witmer to VP/Publisher of Family Circle.  She had been Publisher of the monthly magazine, which has a circulation of 3.8 million and has 20 million readers.  Prior to joining Family Circle, Witmer was Associate Publisher of Better Homes & Gardens, and previously served as Publisher and Associate Publisher of Country Home.

Twentieth Century Fox Television appoints industry veteran Robert Marick as EVP/Fox Licensing and Merchandising.  He will report to Fox Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden.  Marick joins Fox from the Disney Company where he spent more than a decade in the Consumer Products, Music Group and Home Entertainment divisions.  Previously, Marick was VP/Sales & Marketing, Time Warner’s WEA Corp., and held marketing positions at Mattel.
