Good morning. It’s Wednesday, October 18, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
After just four outings, one of only two new freshman series on The CW network schedule, has been cancelled. Runaway, which originally debute4d on Monday nights following 7th Heaven at 9p, and just this past week was moved with Heaven to Sundays at 9p, has been taken off the schedule and replaced with repeats of other series.
If you’re counting: Runaway and Smith are the only two shows to get the official axe thus far. Those freshman shows picked up for a full season include Heroes, Ugly Betty, Brothers & Sisters and Jericho. (Grab a copy of the broadcast primetime schedule [picked-up series noted with “*”] at www.cynopsis.com .)
Tonight’s Finale:
Bravo: Project Runway at 10p (part 2)
Tonight’s Premiere:
Bravo: Top Chef at 11p
The finale of VH1’s Flavor of Love 2 this past Sunday at 10p packed in 7.5 million total viewers, making it the network’s highest-rated telecast. The one-hour show also averaged a 4.6 A18-49 rating, and an 18.0/34 among African-American A18-49 viewers. In addition, seasons one and two of Flavor of Love are now available on iTunes for the prerequisite cost of $1.99 per episode.
A new facet has been added to Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s Major League Baseball package, as both entities have reached a new agreement through 2013 allowing TBS the exclusive rights to air one of the League Championship Series. Marking a cable first, the agreement starts with the National League Championship Series in 2007 and alternates each year until the end of the contract. This adds to TBS’ current baseball package which was announced last July, giving the network coverage of all MLB Division Series Playoff games, all MLB tiebreakers games, a 26 regular season Sunday afternoon Game of the Week beginning 2008, and the rights to the MLB All-Star Game Selection Show. Additionally, TBS will air 70 Braves games nationally next year, then 45 on WTBS/Atlanta in 2008 through 2013.
NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams again leads the evening news numbers with an average of 8.84 million viewers on hand each night for the week of October 9-13. ABC World News Tonight with Charles Gibson was #2 with 8.04 million viewers; and The CBS Evening News with Katie Couric followed with 7.33 million viewers. In the all important news demo, A25-54, NBC led with a 2.3 rating, ABC earned a 2.2 and CBS a 2.0 rtg.
The online advertising agency Right Media Inc., based in Manhattan, has sold 20% of its stake to Yahoo for an unpublished sum to gain awareness for its advertising auction system. Right Media Exchange gives ad networks and online publishers the chance to sell ads on all their web pages to the highest bidder. Yahoo will now offer advertisers the opportunity to bid on some of its unsold inventory throughout its portal.
Have you seen the NEW Cynopsis Video Podcast – it has a decidedly different look and a little humor, and I think you may get a kick out of it. Oh yeah, and it has all the good info you get in the Cynopsis print edition, plus a few other bits and pieces. For some, the best news is you don’t have to download, just click on the video window and it plays.
CBS has give a put pilot order for the US version of BBC‘s Viva Blackpool mystery musical series. Exec produced by Hugh Jackman and with his Seed Prods. partner, John Palermo, Bob Lowry, AND Peter Bowker, the pilot will also star Jackman. The show will be co-produced by BBC, Sony Pictures TV and CBS Paramount Network TV. The show focuses on a shady casino owner trying to take his small operation to the Vegas big time and all the mayhem a Vegas story can include.
Fox has another project on its development slate from the same guys who brought you 24, Bob Cochran and David Ehrman. Fox has given a put pilot commitment to NSA Innocent (working title), about any person who unwittingly happens to get caught up in the world of espionage.
ABC is looking at a new untitled drama from producer John Eisendrath and Mark Gordon, about the people who work in a courthouse, from the judges and prosecutors to the guards and jurors, says Variety. Also from Eisendrath for ABC is a project based in New Orleans that focuses on the local police force and what they are faced with regularly following the wrath of Hurricane Katrina. (Don’t confuse this project with NBC’s drama from Spike Lee called NoLa.)

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1867- The American flag flies over Alaska for the first time, marking formal possession of the territory by the United States. Russia found the territory unprofitable and its efforts to maintain a presence there expensive. Accordingly, Alaska’s 591,000 square miles of territory were sold to the United States for $7 million. At roughly the same time, New York City bought most of what would become Central Park for a little more than $5 million.
