NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBS Films is developing a teen-targeted comedy titled Freaky Monday, which is based on author Mary Rogers‘ 1973 novel Freaky Friday, per Variety.  Produced by Andrew Gunn and Mark Waters, CBS Film picked up the rights from scribe Heather Hach, who co-wrote Freaky Monday with Rogers, as well as the 2003 movie version of Freaky Friday and the book for the Broadway show Legally Blonde: The Musical.  This time around the story centers on a smart yet insecure middle school girl that winds up swapping bodies with her English teacher.  Rogers’ original Freak Friday has been adapted several times as a movie (1976, 2003) as well as for TV (1995).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Lee Unkrich, director of Toy Story 3, reveals in a video announcement that the current theatrical double release of Toy Story/Toy Story 2 3D will be extended due to its box office success ($22.7 million since October 2).  The initial release for the movies was to be for just two weeks, and the Toy Story 3 movie trailer runs in front of the double feature.  Additionally, Unkrich revealed several voiceover cast members joining Toy Story 3, including Kristen Schaal (The Flight of the Conchords) as the voice of a new character and Blake Clark will take over as the voice of Slinky Dog, which had originally been voiced by Jim Varney who passed away back in 2000.  Toy Story 3 is set for release on June 18, 2010.

Disney Channel UK picks up Club High School Musical: Make It Happen (4×15), its third local High School Musical-inspired reality TV series, per Broadcast Now.  Produced by The Foundation, a unit of RDF Media Group, the series is hosted by Kevin Adams (Fame Academy choreographer, star of GMTV) and follows four fans as they race against time to create a High School Musical dance event from beginning to end over the course of just four days.  Club High School Musical: Make It Happen is slated to air on Disney Channel UK in November.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Abbey Home Media Group will release the first Bookaboo DVD in the UK on Monday, October 19.  The DVD is comprised of seven series episodes featuring celebrities such as Meat Loaf and Alesha Dixon.  Designed to encourage storytelling, Bookaboo is a mixed live-action/puppet/animated preschool series that continues to air on CiTV (UK).  Copyright Promotions Licensing Group is handling licensing for the property.

Bulldog Licensing inks an apparel deal for Roland Rat with Poetic Gem, a supplier of branded apparel throughout Europe and the US.  This is the first deal for the celebrated Roland Rat marking its return.  Roland Rat is a wisecracking British TV puppet character that came to fame in the 1980s, first on TVAM and then through several series and appearances on hundreds of shows.  Roland Rat’s humor is not specifically targeted to kids.  He continues to make guest appearances on radio and TV shows and his current projects include ROLAND’S Hollywood Report, which airs in the UK and Europe, and RAT66 a TV series currently in development for the US and UK.  Audio podcasts called ‘RatBoos’ are also posted via Twitter.

Ubisoft enters into a promotional partnership with Schwan’s Consumer Brands North America, makers of Red Baron pizza, to promote its Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up video game title.  During the next eight weeks packages of Red Baron pizza will include four different TMNT-themed trading cards that will feature one of the for Turtles as well as a code that will unlock exclusive content in the game.  Additionally, consumers will receive a $5 rebate for the video game with three pizza UPC codes.  The game release and promotion are part of the yearlong 25the anniversary celebration of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  This classic TV character was afraid of all sorts of things including water, cats, heights, cockatoos and wooden carousel horses.  Who is this?   MR. ED  Kudos to … whoa Nelly … nobody got this one.  I’m saving it and will use it again!  🙂

Today’s Trivia Question:  One of the funniest bits in this show included this speech:

“Ahchoo!!. Thank you. I usually look so much better than this. Please believe me, I have a much cuter dress at the cleaners, and my hair…it’s just that I’ve had this cold, but I shouldn’t be talking about something as silly as this. And when you gave me this award…I’m just [coughs}…sorry…I’m just sorry. Thank you very much.”

What was the show and who made this speech?   (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
