~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

FOX will launch action series 24 over two nights with four total hours on January 11 and 12. The drama will settle into its regular time slot on Mondays at 9p starting January 19. The 8p slot on January 19 is still open though FOX may schedule the midseason series Dollhouse here as the network originally said it would air the freshman series on Mondays as a lead-in to 24.

Wreckreation Nation is a new 13-episode series premiering on Discovery Channel next January. Host Dave Mordal shows off by trying out the many bizarre ways Americans fill their leisure time. Dave travels across the nation participating in everything from an Iowa/Illinois tug of war across the Mississippi River to attending alligator wrestling school in Mosca, CO. True Entertainment produces the series for Discovery Channel.

G4 introduces viewers to the oddly destructive brothers, Craig and Paul Pumphrey in the new series Human Wrecking Balls opening November 12 at 1030p. The duo combines their physical strength (together they weigh 550 pounds) as well as science and grit to level everything from a car, a boat to an airplane with their bare hands. The weekly, 30m series was developed by BASE Productions.

Slowly but surely, U.S. households are readying themselves for the digital transition occurring on February 17, 2009. According to Nielsen’s monthly watch, in October 7.7% of U.S. households remain completely unready for the transition; this is down from 8.4% in September. Also Hispanic households are more unready for the transition than non-Hispanic households. As of last month, 12.4% of Hispanic households are completely unready compared to 7.1% of non-Hispanic households.

Combining pigskin with politics, ESPN had a good showing for its Monday Night Football match between the Washington Redskins and the Pittsburgh Steelers, cites Multichannel News. The game, where Pittsburgh slammed the Redskins and featured pre-taped interviews with both presidential candidates, drew in 14.2 million viewers and a 10.2 rating.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of October 27, 2008:
NBC: 8.36 million total viewers and 2.1/8 A25-54
ABC: 8.34 million total viewers and 2.2/8 A25-54

This Saturday, Cablevision Systems Corp. will begin the twelfth season of its high school quiz show, The Challenge. For this new season, more high school and students in the tri-state area will participate with the winner becoming the Tri-State Challenge Champion and receiving $10,000 for their school and $500 for each team member making it to the final round. Also, each region’s winning team is guaranteed to receive $2,500.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Fox Television Studios produces a new adventure drama series, Defying Gravity from creator/executive producer James Parriott (Grey’s Anatomy) and executive producer Michael Edelstein (Desperate Housewives) in association with Vancouver-based Omni Film Productions Ltd, Canadian broadcasters CTV and SPACE, German broadcaster ProSieben and the BBC. The one-hour series, starring Ron Livingston, is a space thriller set in the near future about eight astronauts from five countries on a six-year international space assignment. The group quickly discovers they literally have the world’s eyes watching their every move and emotion as they work together on their mission.

Outdoor Channel renewed its partnership with the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) by signing a new five-year deal to produce SHOT Show TV surrounding the annual shooting sports show owned by NSSF. Production will begin in mid-January when outdoorsmen convene in Orlando for the SHOT Show 2009. For the next show, Outdoor Channel will expand the show coverage to include updates online on its website in addition to VOD segments for cable affiliates and a SHOT Show special airing on its linear channel.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY
After reshuffling its agenda yesterday to table some issues for a later date the FCC adopted rules for unlicensed use of television “white spaces” and approved two big mergers in the wireless arena. The white space rules allow for both fixed and personal/portable unlicensed devices to access the internet utilizing unused broadcast spectrum, subject to equipment certification by the FCC Laboratory. Verizon Wireless got the O.K. to acquire Alltel Corp., clearing the way for the creation of the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. Also Sprint Nextel was given the go ahead to buy Clearwire, clearing the way for the two companies to launch the first mobile WiMAX network within the next 30 months. To get the FCC to agree to the Alltel acquisition Verizon agreed to freeze roaming rates that smaller carriers must pay to connect to its net  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Breakthrough Animation inks a broadcast production deal for the new preschool series My Big Big Friend (52×11), with Canada’s Treehouse channel.  My Big Big Friend is being produced by Breakthrough Animation in association with Brazil’s 2D Lab and Treehouse.  Breakthrough will handle the distribution for the property. My Big Big Friend revolves around a shy but adventurous four-year-old and his big imagination. Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  France’s UGC has taken on Zodiak International‘s new Yellow Bird productions of Stieg Larsson’s 3 Millennium series books with the acquisition of the theatrical, TV and DVD distribution rights to the feature film and the TV series. ABC’s college football showdown in the Lone Star state carried the night each hour: at 8p ABC was #1 with 3.3/11; during 9p ABC’s ratings rose to 4.1/13; then at 10p ABC spiked up to 4.5/13.

NBC’s NFL game opened during 8p on top with a 6.0/14, with FOX placing second with the average of The Simpsons/King of the Hill at 5.2/12. During 9p, NBC’s NFL match remained in #1 at 6.1/14 with ABC’s Desperate Housewives not too far behind at 5.8/13. Then at 10p, NBC’s football trumped the other networks with a 6.4/16 while the next nearest competitor was ABC’s Brothers & Sisters at 3.4/9.

NBC got the most viewer votes at 9p with SNL Presidential Bash ’08 at 5.8/13. Viewer turnout remained high for the SNL special through 10p as NBC delivered a 5.4/13, well ahead of usual time period winner, CBS’ CSI: Miami at 3.6/9.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Discovery Channel tagged Ken Schwab as SVP/Programming and a member of the network’s leadership team effective January 2009. Ken will head planning as well as direct and implement the network’s programming strategy, working closely with John Ford, President/GM, Discovery Channel. In addition, Ken will supervise all programming duties and work with new media to integrate programming on multiple platforms. Most recently, Ken served as SVP/Programming for TBS and TNT where he managed all programming scheduling and acquisition for both networks.

Tribune Company-owned KTLA/Los Angeles recruited three executives for its sales division: Patricia Tang will be the GSM supervising the station’s sales operations and Troy Arce and Nancy Caldwell were both named LSMs.

Mala Chapple was appointed as VP/Original Programming and Production with the Sundance Channel. Mala will supervise original series produced by the network and will manage executives involved with each series. A few of the current projects under Mala’s oversight include Spectacle: Elvis Costello with . . . and the docu-series Iconoclasts. She reports to Lynne Kirby, SVP/Original Programming and Development.
