Cynopsis: DIGITAL

11/04/09

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, November 4, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Is the DVD really on its way out? Following a partnership announced earlier this year which made CinemaNow downloads available on Best Buy‘s retail site, the electronics chain announced plans to license and deploy Sonic’s Roxio CinemaNow technology and services platform to make on-demand digital content delivery a standard feature on connected consumer electronics devices sold throughout its U.S. stores, including PCs, connected TVs, set top DVRs, Blu-ray Disc and mobile media players. Sonic licenses new movies, TV shows, indie films and catalog titles, often day-in-date with their DVD release. Best Buy will be paying CinemaNow a fee along with a percentage of the service’s revenue for powering the service. CinemaNow also handles the back-end support for Blockbuster’s streaming video rental service.

November will go down as the month when on demand releases finally broke through to match the DVD window, according to In Demand. Warner Home Video, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment and Universal Studios Home Entertainment are all planning day-and-date VOD and DVD/Blu-ray Disc releases for the month. Sony’s Angels & Demons, to be released day-in-date on Nov. 24, will be the biggest in terms of its box office results, totaling $133 million.

Travel Channel scared up record web traffic during its Haunted Live event this past Friday. Friday (10/30) and Saturday (10/31) ranked #1 and #2 all-time in web traffic for travelchannel.com in terms of page views, site visits, and daily uniques, according to the Discovery network.

Online video search engine Blinkx said revenue doubled year-over-year to $13.1 million for the first half of 2009, thanks to ad campaigns from topline brands including Microsoft, Toyota and P&G, which booked campaigns through agencies including Universal McCann, Ogilvy and Grey Group. Blinkx’ Daily Video Search run rate increased 249% to 17.4 million searches per day in Sept. 2009, up from 7 million per day in Sept. 2008. Losses from operations totaled $7.4m, including $1.4m of non-recurring costs relating to infrastructure investments.

Yahoo has become the latest search engine to begin testing the integration of real-time results into its search data thanks to a new partnership with OneRiot, per the WSJ. OneRiot’s technology searches links and mini URLs users are sharing in real-time via services such as Twitter and Digg. The partnership is independent of Yahoo’s recent search partnership with Microsoft.

The messy lawsuit over the sale of Skype may be close to being settled, reports the NYTimes, following up on a story originally broken by GigaOm. The proposed settlement is between a consortium of private equity investors who successfully bid for Skype in September, and Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis – the original founders of Skype. The two entrepreneurs have filed several lawsuits to block the consortium’s $1.9 billion deal to buy a majority of Skype from eBay.

Sorenson Media announced the immediate availability of Sorenson Squeeze 6, a total workflow solution that enables users to publish professional-quality video to multiple sites – including YouTube, Twitter, Limelight, Akamai and the company’s online video platform – with a single click. New features include encoding presets; high-quality audio and video filters; DVD burning tools; and the new review, approval and notification functions.

TransAtlantic submarine transport cable provider Hibernia Atlantic announced it is on track to complete a multi-million euro cable build project, known as Project Kelvin, providing the island of Ireland with its first direct 40Gbps network. The project, a joint initiative between the Republic of Ireland’s Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources (DCENR) and Northern Ireland’s Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI), is expected to be completed in March 2010.

Google introduced a new mobile analytics platform enabling developers to track usage of iPhone and Android applications. As with the web-based Google Analytics platform, it tracks pageviews and events based on how developers want to trigger them.

Thanks to the explosion of the iPhone and other new devices, touchscreen-based mobile phone adoption climbed 159% during the past year to reach 23.8 million U.S. users, according to ComScore. The Apple iPhone ranked as the top touchscreen device family with 1/3 of touchscreen device users age 13 and older, nearly four times larger than the market share of the next largest device family – the LG Dare (8.7%). LG Voyager ranked third with 7.8% of the market, followed by the Blackberry Storm (7%) and Palm Treo (6.5%). Smartphones and touchscreen devices tend to be more popular among younger users. While 38.8% of all mobile subscribers (age 13+) are under the age of 35, more than half of smartphone users fall into this demo, and comprise 57.7% of all touchscreen device users.

Radio comes in second only to TV in terms of daily reach, according to a Nielsen analysis of media usage conducted with the Council for Research Excellence. 77% of adults are reached by broadcast radio on a daily basis, compared to 37% who listen to CDs and tapes and the 12% who listen to portable audio devices. Broadcast radio was the dominant form of audio media at home, work, and in the car. Comparatively, web/internet (excluding email) reached 64% of adults, compared to 35% for newspapers and 27% for magazines.

YouTube’s Head of Content Partnerships Jordan Hoffner is leaving the Google-owned company to join Ben Silverman’s new content venture at IAC, per paidcontent.org. Chris Maxcy, former Director of YouTube Partner Development, will replace him.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The MPAA filed a brief with the FCC last week warning that the U.S. would become a second-world broadband country if it doesn’t move quickly to stomp out online piracy and “make respect for creative content online a core and guiding principle of the National Broadband Plan.” The studios-backed group also argued that combating online content theft would substantially reduce unlawful traffic that slows internet speeds for law abiding citizens. Meanwhile, MPAA member Paramount Pictures filed its own comments stating that more than 5 million worldwide users downloaded one of 6 illegal copies of “Star Trek” last year, warning that the process of pirating movies has been greatly simplified. “It is clear that piracy has advanced from geek to sleek.” One thing is for sure – the industry has really delved into the culture of file sharing, if for no other reason than to understand who is picking its pockets. Paramount identifies six types of websites and apps that can either host pirated movies or direct consumers to pirated movies:  aggregators (zml.com), cyberlockers (megaupload.com), search engines (google), leech sites (watch-movies-online.tv), UGC sites (megavideo.com) and peer-to-peer (P2P) networks (mininova.org). It’s only natural to place piracy at the center of any discussions about net neutrality, but opponents of the legislation still don’t have a ready answer to solve the issue.
