ESPN and the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) announced a firm four-year agreement was settled between the two, allowing ESPN to have exclusive TV, radio, digital, international and marketing rights for 15 BCS bowl games beginning January 2011. The deal covers the Fiesta, Orange and Sugar Bowl games each season and the BCS National Championship Game for three years starting 2011. This deal, at a reported $125 million per year, marks the first time these major bowl games will air on a cable network versus a broadcast network. FOX most recently aired the bowl games and earlier this week declined to match ESPN’s offer. ABC currently holds the rights to the Rose Bowl through 2010 and sister network, ESPN has not verified if it will take over the Rose in 2011. Specifics of the new ESPN/BCS deal include:

  • ESPN will televise the BSC bowl games in primetime each January beginning 2011; schedule will be forthcoming.
  • ESPN Radio has broadcast all BCS games since 2000 and will now have exclusive national radio rights for the four-year term of the deal, and ESPN Deportes Radio will have exclusive Spanish-language rights.
  • Under Digital Media, ESPN.com will have content rights and manage the official BCS website. Bowl games may also be simulcast via ESPN’s broadband network, ESPN360.com and on ESPN Mobile TV.
  • ESPN International will distribute and televise BCS games globally on networks and via syndication including ESPN America and ESPN Desportes.
  • ESPN gained marketing rights to the BCS games and the BCS National Championship Game including the right to sell sponsorships.
  • Additional coverage with encore game airings will happen on ESPNU, ESPN Classic and ESPN’s VOD service.

Syndication Brief(ly): During the week of 11/3-11/9/08: The Oprah Winfrey Show, from CTD, pegged its best week in nine months climbing to a 5.9 HH AA%. Oprah’s good week included a Post Election Special on Wednesday giving the talker the highest single day rating in half a year at 6.9 HH … CSI: New York, also from CTD, is the top weekly hour off-net show with a 3.6 HH AA% and increasing among M18-34 by +17% … weekly strip House of Payne from 2/T, is doing the best among all new strip shows in households posting a 2.1 compared to 2.0 from its debut the week of 9/22, as well as holding steady at 1.5 with W1849 and a 1.2 with A1849 compared to the opening week … and the new Legend of the Seeker produced by ABC Studios and distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television, is tied with CSI: New York as the #1 weekly scripted hour as the series premiered the weekend of November 1-2 with an average of 4.1 GAA HH national rating and taking in an estimated 5.8 million viewers.

Final numbers for Sunday’s 60 Minutes on CBS featuring an interview with President-Elect Barack Obama and upcoming first lady Michelle Obama drew in 25.1 million viewers and posted an 8.1/18 with A25-54 and 6.3/16 with A18-49.

Cablevision Systems Corp. is teaming with nonprofit organization Partnership for a Drug-Free America on a new VOD PSA “The Teen Brain & The World of Drugs & Alcohol.” The goal is to help parents talk to their teens about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse and offer treatment support resources for families. The PSA is available now, free of charge, to Cablevision’s digital video subscribers with a digital set-top box in the New York metro area.

NBC is riding President-Elect Obama’s coattails as the network is developing a buddy comedy adaptation on the book Making Friends With Black People by Nick Adams, reports Variety. The project highlights U.S. race relations by centering on one white guy and one black guy who become friends but don’t always have the same perspective on situations. Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil, executive producers on The Game will write and executive produce the new project while Universal Media Studios will produce with Industry Entertainment.

Also from Variety Laura Linney follows Gillian Anderson as host of PBS’ weekly series Masterpiece Classic. Linney will speak during the opening sequences each week beginning January 4 for a presentation of Tess of the d’Urbervilles and continuing through May 2009. Masterpiece Classic will include other costume dramas during the new season such as Wuthering Heights and The Incomplete Charles Dickens.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: 
Jerry Yang is stepping aside as CEO of Yahoo, the company announced Monday evening and a search for a successor is already underway. Mr. Yang, one of the company’s founders, took over as CEO of Yahoo back in June of 2007 and his tenure has been defined by his handling of Microsoft’s takeover bid. Microsoft offered $44.6 billion or $31/share for the company back in February – then a 62% premium over its price. But Yang held out for more money, a move that has continued to anger and frustrate shareholders. With a different chief executive at the helm, investors’ hopes of an eventual deal with Microsoft have been rekindled. Although Redmond has denied it is still interested in Yahoo, analysts say a search partnership combining the #2 and #3 players in the market could make sense.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: National Geographic launches National Geographic Games (NGG), a new division that will publish and develop video games.  Additionally, NGG has also partnered with Namco Bandai and Sony Computer Entertainment to publishing family-targeted games across major gaming consoles, handheld and online and mobile platforms.  Paul Levine, SVP/Extended Platforms Group, NGV, and SVP/Corporate Strategy and Development, NGGM, will lead the new division as well as NGV’s Maps and Mobile businesses. Chris Mate, former Take2 Interactive and Bethesda Softworks executive, has joined as VP and GM, NGG and will oversee and manage the group’s daily global operations.  NGG’s first games, set for release this month, include Herod’s Lost Tomb (self-published by National Geographic), National Geographic: Panda (Namco Bandai), and National Geographic: Africa (Sony). Saturday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX resumed its first place status Saturday night with 2.1/6 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX dealt a one-two punch to win the first two hours: at 8p, the double Cops episodes averaged a 2.0/6 followed at 9p by America’s Most Wanted with 2.1/6. The reality genre remained in the lead as CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery won the 10p hour with 1.5/5.

NBC was a force to be reckoned with the rest of the night as Sunday Night Football did a 7.3/18 through 8p; followed at 9p by a 7.2/16 topping second place ABC’s Desperate Housewives at 6.2/14; and finishing with a 7.7/18 at 10p besting ABC’s Brothers & Sisters at 3.6/9.

Hearst Magazines upped three executives in its Digital Media unit: Chuck Cordray to SVP; Chris Wilkes to VP; and Debra Robinson to SVP/CIO. In addition, Cameron Connors was tagged as Director of Marketing Services for Hearst Magazines Digital Media.

Eddie Dalva was appointed SVP/Content with MTV Networks Entertainment Group. In his new role, Eddie will focus on Spike TV as well as TV Land and Comedy Central in specific areas.
