Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 18, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Nickelodeon is packing up its trunk for sleep away camp.  Nickelodeon commissions E1 Entertainment and Reveille to co-produce its new comedy pilot (1×30), Summer Camp, created by writer Peter Barsocchini (High School Musical) and directed by Lev L. Spiro (Wizards of Waverly Place, Jonas, Weeds, Everybody Hates Chris, Arrested Development and many others).  The pilot is scheduled to begin production this month in Malibu.  Summer Camp is Executive Produced by Barsocchini, Frank Saperstein, SVP/Kids and Animation, E1, and John Morayniss of E1 Entertainment, and Reveille’s Carolyn Bernstein and Todd Cohen, as well as Laurence Mark of Laurence Mark Productions who is also producing. Co-Executive Producer is David Blackman of Laurence Mark Productions. E1 Entertainment will handle the worldwide distribution for the property.

MTV Networks (MTVN) picks up the exclusive US TV rights to Sony‘s feature film Michael Jackson’s This Is It (PG).  Under the six-year agreement the movie will be available to MTVN and its domestic channels beginning in 2011, including MTV, VH1, VH1 Classic and Palladia, as well as extending to Viacom’s BET Networks, including its new Centric channel.  No word on the terms of the deal.  The TV deal was brokered by Sony Pictures Television and Ben Zurier, EVP/Program Strategy, VH1, VH1 Classic & Palladia for MTV Networks. MTV Networks will also collaborate with Sony Pictures Entertainment in marketing the DVD release of the movie in early 2010.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

My Little Pony may be headed to new pastures following the debut of the one-hour special My Little Pony: Twinkle Wish Adventure on Disney Channel earlier this month.  Due to the success of the special, Discovery/Hasbro has set a My Little Pony series on the fast track to a series for their joint network, per THR.  Like many properties these days, My Little Pony will get the multi-platform treatment, which will include development of a video game as well as a TV series among other opportunities.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Tonight on Cartoon Network‘s series Destroy Build Destroy will pit the casts of the network’s upcoming live-action/CGI movie Ben 10: Alien Swarm and its live-action series Dude, What Would Happen against one another in a new challenge.  Cartoon Network will premiere the 90-minute movie Ben 10: Alien Swarm on Wednesday, November 25 at 7p.

Nickelodeon will celebrate Thanksgiving next week with its Superstuffed Nicksgiving Weekend, November 26-29 (Thursday  Sunday).  The holiday weekend event will feature new episodes, marathons, movies and a special preview of the new live-action comedy Big Time Rush, which is officially set to launch in 2010.  The Superstuffed Nicksgiving Weekend schedule goes a like this:

  • Thanksgiving Day/Thursday, November 26  back-to-back movies and TV movies from 8a-9p (e.g. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Movie, iDate a bad Boy, iFight Shelby Marx, etc.).
  • Friday, November 27  the network features a day-long marathon of SpongeBob SquarePants and The Penguins of Madagascar, capping off the night with premiere episodes of each at 8p and 8:30p, respectively.
  • Saturday, November 28  the day includes a premiere episode of the new series Fanboy and Chum Chum at 10:30a, and a new episode of iCarly at 8p.  At 8:30 the network will offer a one-hour preview of its new series Big Time Rush.
  • Sunday, November 29  will include the annual airing of Merry Christmas, Drake & Josh at 8p.

New celebrity filled episodes of Playhouse Disney‘s Handy Manny will premiere Monday-Thursday, December 7 -10 at 9a on Disney Channel.  Special guests in these new episodes include Rosario Dawson (Sin City, Rent) guest stars as a marine biologist, Giada De Laurentiis (Everyday Italian) takes on the role of a pizza parlor owner, Jim Belushi (According to Jim) plays a drawbridge operator and Lance Bass will (‘N Sync, Dancing With The Stars) returns in his recurring role of the klutzy “surfer dude,” Elliot.

As a result of a vote by members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Best Animated Feature category for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will expand to include five contenders.  According to the amended rule, eligible feature-length movies must be 70 minutes or longer with no more than 25% live-action.  If there are fewer than eight animated movies qualify, the award will not be given, making those pictures eligible for Best picture.  Additionally, if there are fewer than 12 eligible animated movies, the category will be limited to three nominees.  Nominations for the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards will be announced on Tuesday, December 15 at 8a.  Hosted by Ricky Gervais, the Golden Globe Awards will be handed out live from The Beverly Hilton on Sunday, January 17 at 8p on NBC.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cartoon Network teams with Kids Foot Locker for a holiday 2oo9 cross promotion including a retail reward shoppers promotion featuring the network’s upcoming Ben 10: Alien Swarm movie (11/25, 7p), with the network driving viewers to Kids Foot Locker, via custom on-air/online spots, for information about the campaign.  The promotion will offer consumers a free limited edition Ben 10: Alien Swarm movie poster with purchase of a pair of Converse Chuck Taylor shoes in store and at kidsfootlocker .com today through December 6, 2009.  Additionally, kids will also be able to get their FusionFall avatar a pair of Omnitrix Kicks with a special coupon code (good through December 31) they will get when they buy their Chuck Taylor’s (along with their free poster).  FusionFall is a Cartoon Network Massive Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG).  Ben 10: Alien Swarm is being promoted across kids TV, online gaming sites, in print, on radio, at movie theaters, on billboards, via publishing and at retail.

Toei Animation and Well Go USA complete a second DVD agreement for the animated property, Digimon Data Squad.  Under the deal, Well Go USA will release the Collection Two special edition set in the US and Canada in the first half of 2010.  The DVD is comprised of episodes 14-26.  Digimon Data Squad is the fifth season of Toei Animation’s animated series of Digimon.

Think Wow Toys partners with Jamba Juice for the new Jamba branded toy blender EZ-2 Make! Jamba Juice Smoothie and Ice Pop Maker.  Targeted to K8+, the product will include recipes and instructions for fruit smoothies and ice pops to make at home.  The EZ-2 Make! Jamba Juice Smoothie and Ice Pop Maker will be available at Toys “R” Us and select Jamba Juice locations beginning this month, and will rollout to additional US retailers from January 2010.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Wayne Roche has been appointed Director/Business Development at Cynopsis Media. Wayne was Director/Luxury Brand Sales and Sponsorships at The Hollywood Reporter and has held senior management positions at Stagebill Media and Variety Inc.  Wayne will be based in the Cynopsis Summit, NJ office, and can be reached via email at [email protected].   Additionally, our own Mike Farina has been upped to Senior Director/Business Development & Sales at Cynopsis.  Mike has been with the company for 12 months and is also based in Summit.  His email is [email protected].  Please join me in lifting our morning coffee cups to these gents!

The still un-named Discovery Communications and Hasbro joint TV network welcomes four new senior members of its team.

  • Amber Fredman-Tarshis is appointed CMO.  Fredman-Tarshis will work with closely with Discovery/Hasbro joint venture President and CEO Margaret Loesch to develop the network’s brand identity, which includes its name and logos.  Most recently VP/Marketing Victoria’s Secret, Fredman-Tarshis previously served as VP/Global Brand Management, Warner Bros. Entertainment, where she managed the Harry Potter Brand worldwide, Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Polar Express.
  • Dan Pimentel is named CFO.  Pimentel joins the Discovery/Hasbro effort from Discovery’s Commerce Division where he was VP/Finance.  He previously toiled for Disney as Controller of the Disney Stores.
  • Brooke Goldstein joins the team as SVP/Ad Sales.  Heading up the sales team, Goldstein will report to Loesch and will receive functional support from Discovery’s Joe Abruzzese, President/Ad Sales and Senior Ad Sales Leadership Team.  Most recently, Goldstein was Managing Partner at Mediacom Communications.
  • Lorrie Copeland is named SVP/Consumer Insights and Research.  Copeland comes to the Discovery/Hasbro joint venture from Hasbro, where she was SVP and Head/Consumer Insights.
