Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 14, 2007, and this is your first early morning.
Dragonball fans got a holiday gift a bit early yesterday, having waited several years for the official news … and with that, Twentieth Century Fox has officially announced key cast members and release date for its live-action movie adaptation of Dragonball. Slated for a worldwide release on August 15, 2008, Justin Chatwin (War of the Worlds) will portray Goku, our hero with the big stand-up hair, and James Marsters (Smallville, Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) takes on the role of the evil Piccolo. The movie will being helmed by James Wong (Final Destination, X-Files/TV series), who also did a rewrite on the script, and produced by Stephen Chow (Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle). The movie is based on the hugely successful Dragonball franchise, a franchise (first a manga then anime) created by Akira Toriyama, and better known in the US as Dragonball Z. In order to properly and convincingly protect the Earth from evildoers, Chatwin undergoing stunt training with 87Eleven, those are the folks who trained actors for The Matrix, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and 300. The Jump Comics division of the Tokyo-based publishing house Shueisha is the publisher of the DRAGONBALL manga.
MORE KIDS STUFF
PBS Kids Sprout teams with Barney the dinosaur to celebrates Thanksgiving next week when the big purple guy serves as a special co-host live on The Sunny Side Up Show, 9a-12p, on Thanksgiving morning, November 22, 2007. Barney, who is 20 in human years, will share holiday sent in by viewers (K2-5/parents), and will make live phone calls to five viewers during the morning. Later that day PBS Kids Sprout will host a six-hour Barney Marathon, 12-6p. Interstitially throughout the marathon episodes, Barney will showcase hand turkeys created by Elmo, the Teletubbies, and Angelina Ballerina among other characters. Additionally, next week leading up to Thanksgiving, The Sunny Side Up Show will feature Sproutlet Thanksgiving Shorts, which are comprised of viewer created artwork adapted, by The Little Director company, into holiday-themed animated shorts.
PBS Kids, the preschool block on free PBS TV stations, heads back into production for a third season, of the two-hour block, with its production partner Out of the Blue Enterprises, with the addition of two new hosts. Joining Miss Lori as host of PBS Kids are Miss Rosa and Mr. Steve. Played by Jennifer Pena, Miss Rosa is a teacher who will introduce Spanish-language words and phrases into the block. Steve Roslonek, also known as SteveSongs, will portray Mr. Steve, also a teacher; he will fold original music elements into each morning. The new season is in production in NYC now through the end of the month.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Cartoon Network Enterprises enters into a multi-brand partnership with KellyToys USA. Under the deal KellyToys will create plush, sporting goods and novelty items based on the network’s properties including Ben 10, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, The Grim Adventures of Bill & Mandy, Ed, Edd and Eddy and The Powerpuff Girls, among others. Announced at IAPPA Attractions Expo 2007 in Orlando yesterday, the new products will be distributed to amusement park game redemption centers, amusement shops and amusement cranes (if we could have one in our NYC apartment, we would), from spring 2008 in the US and Canada.
Marvel Comics launches Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited, its online subscription service, where consumers can download titles from Marvel’s vast comic book archive of titles old and new, which also includes mini-series ands special issues. With Marvel editors serving as curators of the site, beginning this week Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited is offering 2,500 comic books, with 20 or more additional titles to be added each week. Accessible by both PC and MAC users (Marvel.com/digitalcomics), there are monthly and yearly subscription options. Marvel Comics is a division of Marvel Entertainment.
Sesame Workshop taps the Licensing Shop, Inc. as its new licensing representative in Canada. Beginning January 2008 Licensing Shop will oversee the Sesame brand across Canada in a range of categories including toys, games, apparel, publishing, home video/DVD, arts and crafts, souvenir, youth furniture, party goods, gifts, healthy foods and many others. Sesame Street is available in 70+% of Canadian HH via PBS, while Elmo’s World, Play With Me Sesame and Global Grover air multiple times a day, six days a week, on Canadian preschool channel Treehouse TV.
