Cynopsis: DIGITAL

11/11/09

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, November 11, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Two of the giants of the social networking world, LinkedIn and Twitter, unveiled a partnership that will direct live Tweets into the world’s leading professionally-themed social network. LinkedIn’s 51 million users will now be able to send status updates promoting themselves and their abilities to Twitter on a case-by-case basis, and vice versa. Users will also be able to add a section to their LinkedIn profile archiving their most recent tweets. “The business use case for Twitter is turning out to be very important – more and more people are finding out that the persona they create on the web is part of their resume in many ways,” said Twitter founder Biz Stone in a video blog post. Twitter has been busy making itself indispensible by cutting such integration deals. The microblogging outfit announced similar integrations with Google and Microsoft last month.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Sprint Nextel, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Intel, Eagle River and Bright House Networks have collectively committed another $1.56 billion in equity financing to help get Clearwire’s 4G WiMax mobile internet service off the ground. The company reported a narrowing loss of $82.4 million during Q3 yesterday, as it has had to rely on promotional discounting to help attract new subscribers. Q3 revenue rose to $68.8 million, up from $60.8 million a year ago. Clearwire finished the quarter with 555,000 subscribers, a net add of 44,000 new customers.

EA imparted some bad news along with its plan to acquire U.K.-based social gaming start-up PlayFish for at least $275 million. The company will also lay off 17% of its work force by next March as it closes several of its facilities. The move will shed almost 1,500 jobs but will result in savings of $100 million annually.

Citadel Media En Espanol (formerly ABC Radio Networks) announced a partnership with Terra to develop online brand extensions for properties including Tu Vida Es Mi Vida, a popular radio show among US Hispanics. Terra will work with Citadel Media to manage all aspects of Maria Marin radio in the digital arena, including editorial programming, advertising sales, user experience and Web design.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Children’s Television Workshop kicked off its 40th season of Sesame Street yesterday on the 40th anniversary of its first episode, which aired on Nov. 10, 1969. The Sesame Street website has launched some interactive features to invite those of who grew up with the show to look back on some of its classic moments. Watch rare clips and vote for your favorite “funky” clip from the 70’s. Meanwhile Sesame Street’s YouTube channel already has some clips from the upcoming season, including celebrity cameos from Cameron Diaz and Adam Sandler. To help celebrate America’s longest running children’s TV show (4,189 episodes and counting), Google Doodles (the illustrations that appear above the search bar on Google.com) have also been Sesame Street-themed for the past week, featuring the Cookie Monster, Big Bird’s three-toed feet and a group shot yesterday. An in keeping with the times, Sesame Street is programming its hour around programming “blocks” this year. The show is also introducing new 3D CGI characters such as Abby Cadabby developed by “Ice Age” character creator Peter de S3ve, that take advantage of the latest technology but maintain that puppet feel. The curriculum for this season is focused on nature and environmental causes. Oscar has been way out in front of this trend – he’s been making use of garbage for four decades.
