Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 6, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
DQ Entertainment (DQE) inks a co-production deal with Paris-based Moonscoop to complete the US$12 million production budget for the new original 3D HD animated TV series (52×11) and TV movie (1×60), The Jungle Book. Based on Rudyard Kipling’s eponymous book, The Jungle Book being developed and produced by DQE. The other major co-production partners on-board for the project are Germany’s ZDF Enterprises (ZDE) and ZDF Broadcasting (ZDF), as well as France’s broadcasting and licensing company TF1 Group. DQE holds majority global rights including TV and all platforms of distribution, home video, VOD, publishing, merchandising and all form of licensing. ZDF/ZDF-E holds distribution rights for Europe (excluding French, English and Irish territories), Middle East and Latin America for the series and movie. MoonScoop will work in tandem with TF1 broadcasting and other French funding agencies on the series. NBC Universal will be responsible for home video distribution in the UK, France, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
Disney XD puts in an order for a new original comedy series, Viper Slap (working title). Set to begin production in July, Viper Slap revolves around Ryan, a teen boy living out his dream as the new lead guitarist of his favorite classic rock band. Ryan is determined to help the band, comprised of a bunch of misfits, get it together for a major comeback, while in turn they find their own way of helping him navigate the teen experience. Created by Michael Kaplan (Frasier, Girlfriends) and Ron Rappaport, the series executive producers are Michael Kaplan (Frasier, Girlfriends) and Richard Gurman (Married … with Children, Still Standing), the series will star Logan Miller, Steve Valentine, Greg Baker and Stephen Full.
MORE KIDS STUFF
George Lopez stars in Nickelodeon‘s new original TV movie Mr. Troop Mom, which is set to premiere on the network Friday, June 19 at 8p. Produced by Nickelodeon in partnership with Warner Premiere and George Lopez Presents, Mr. Troop Mom revolves around a successful, workaholic lawyer/widower (Lopez), who takes on the role as “Team Mom” in an effort to bond with his tween daughter and heads out on a camping with a group of tween girls. William Dear (Angels in the Outfield) directs the TV movie from an original screenplay by Thomas Ian Griffith. Executive producers are Ann Lopez and George Lopez. Warner Home Video releases Mr. Troop Mom on Blu-ray and DVD on June 23.
In other Nickelodeon news, the network orders a second season (20×30) of its live-action comedy True Jackson, VP. The series stars Keke Palmer, who will reprise her role as True in the new episodes of True Jackson, VP series, which airs Saturdays at 8:30p.
Disney XD picks up a second season of its live-action adventure series Aaron Stone. The series heads back into production in Toronto this June. Starring are Kelly Blatz, J.P. Manoux, Tania Gunadi and David Lambert, Aaron Stone is a production of Shaftesbury Aaron Stone Inc.
Radio Disney hosts the world premiere of Paranoid, the new single from Jonas Brothers, Tomorrow, Thursday, May 7 at 4p, during its Planet Premiere feature. Paranoid is the first single from Jonas Brothers’ upcoming Hollywood Records release Lines, Vines & Trying Times, which will be available in stores on Tuesday, June 15.
About a year after acquiring the social networking aggregate, Socialthing, AOL announced that Warner Bros. Television Group (WBTVG) will launch Socialthing across WBTVG’s digital destination businesses, including KidsWB.com, as well as CWTV.com, TheWB.com, DCHeroZone.com, Essence.com and Momlogic.com. Both AOL and WBTVG are units of Time Warner. Socialthing allows users to employ tools to communicate with friends, share content across multiple sites, and track the activity of their friends on the internet. Publishers interested in enabling Socialthing on their sites can check out this site www.socialthing.com/forwebsites.
More international broadcast deals for Chorion‘s 3D CGI animated series Olivia (52×11). Based on Ion Falconer’s Olive books and produced by Brown Bag Films, the preschool-targeted series has been picked up by Nickelodeon International for Italy and its channels in Russia, central and eastern Europe and South Africa. The series already airs on Nickelodeon US and Nick Jr. in the UK. Additionally, Disney Channel Japan acquires Olivia, along with RTP (Portugal), TG4 (Ireland), Happy TV (Serbia) and RTV (Slovenia). Set to air in 120 territories this year, Olivia can currently be seen on Five (UK), ABC Australia, TF1 (France), Danmarks Radio (Denmark), YLE (Finland), SVT (Sweden), NRK (Norway), RUV (Iceland) and Disney Latin America.

ITV Global Entertainment names Jakks Pacific to rep its girl-centric web and TV property Bella Sara in the US and Canada. ITV Global Entertainment partners Hidden City Games with Jakks Pacific to extend the property in a range of categories (and products) including feature plush toys, figurines, dolls, play-sets, dress-up, kites and stationery, to toy stores, mass market retailers, mail order companies and online outlets. Targeted to K5-13, Bella Sara was launched in Denmark by creator Gitte Odder Braendgaard and introduced the US as a trading card game in 2007 by game publisher and marketer Hidden City Games, Inc.
Jakks Pacific has also been appointed by Hit Entertainment as the master toy licensee for Aardman Animation‘s preschool series Timmy Time and the kid/tween/teen/family aimed Shaun Sheep for the US and Canada. Under the deal, Jakks has rights to manufacture and market a full line of products for both properties including plush, electronic learning toys, figures, and playsets, as well as stationery activity sets, craft activity sets, and musical instruments. The Timmy Time products are slated to launch in fall 2010 following Timmy Time’s debut on Playhouse Disney. Shaun the Sheep items, including feature collectible figures and novelty plush for teens and tweens, are scheduled to launch in 2010. Hit is managing the consumer products roll-out of Timmy Time in North America, in addition to managing the consumer products rights of Aardman properties Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Aardman Classics. Hit also manages Aardman’s themed attractions business worldwide for Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Timmy Time.

Netflix ups Andrew Rendich to Chief Service and DVD Operations Officer. In addition to making sure the red envelops show up in our mailbox, OK his role is way more complicated than that, including being responsible for operations engineering, nationwide shipping and receiving, Rendich adds Netflix customer service to his role. Rendich, who had been VP/Operations, will continue to report to co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings.
Vivendi announces the retirement of Rene Penisson as a Member of the Management Board, Chairman, Activision Blizzard and Vivendi’s Director/Human Resources at the end of his current term. Penisson joined Vivendi in 2002 and is credited with being a key player in the company’s recovery and development, particularly in the video game business. Following Penisson’s departure, Stephane Roussel is appointed as SVP/Human Resources, and Jean-Bernard Levy, Chairman of the Management Board, will become Chairman, Activision Blizzard.
