Good morning, it’s Wednesday, May 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC Universal’s executive management shake-down has ended with Ben Silverman, founder/CEO of Reveille and veteran NBCU executive Marc Graboff serving as Co-Chairmen of NBC Entertainment and NBC Universal Television Studio. Both will report directly to Jeff Zucker, Pres/CEO. Kevin Reilly, President/NBC Entertainment for the last three years, will leave. In their new positions, Silverman and Graboff will jointly head all facets of the network’s primetime, late-night and daytime programming as well as the digital offerings related to the entertainment division including NBC.com. In addition, the duo will supervise the network and television studio’s creative, marketing, business and financial areas. Graboff, who was appointed President/NBCU Television, West Coast this past February will retain his oversight role in Domestic TV Distribution. Barry Wallach, President/Domestic TV Distribution will continue to report to Graboff.

For those of you wondering, Ben Silverman’s Reveille Prods. will continue to operate as an independent company, and Silverman will continue to have a say about the shows its produces, tho going forward he will not have a financial stake in them.  Currently Reveille has several shows on the air, both on NBC and other broadcast and cable networks.  Who will run the day to day at Reveille remains a question.

Comedy Central has unveiled a list of new pilots in development for 2007-2008:

  • Held Up (wt) is a half-hour narrative centering on a bored bank teller whose life takes a dramatic turn when his bank is held up by two groups of insane robbers. The bank employees are held hostage during the entire series and develop their own version of The Stockholm Syndrome.
  • Larry the Cable Guy (wt) is half-hour animated series about Larry, co-owner of a cable TV station who butts heads with the station’s other owner, a woman who has class and taste yet inexplicably Larry’s questionable programming ideas prevail.
  • Michael Ian Black Doesn’t Understand (wt) is a comedic sketch show hosted by Black who addresses a current topic each week using field and in-studio pieces.
  • Night Writer (wt) is a short-form comedy featuring animation, live-action and voice-over stills about a comedy show writer who ends up writing about events in real time. From Saturday Night Live’s former headwriter, T. Sean Shannon.
  • Root of All Evil (wt) is a pilot has two comedians, in a fake courtroom setting, arguing about two diverse topics with Lewis Black of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart overseeing it all.

Other Comedy Central shows that have been given presentation deals include:

  • David Allen Grier’s Chocolate News – a magazine parody show that covers urban pop culture topics.
  • The JoKoy Project – JoKoy will star along with a racially diverse cast in this comedy show featuring sketch, stand-up and animation segments.
  • The Watch List – sketch comedy/variety show featuring Middle Eastern-American comedians.

Oxygen has revealed its summer schedule which will include two new series and a new installment of a third:

  • Bad Girls Road Trip – series premieres June 12 at 10p; six 30m episodes will feature cast mates from season one of The Bad Girls Club on the road looking for more bad girls to appear on season two. From Bunim-Murray Productions.
  • Fight Girls – premieres June 12 at 1030p; eight one-hour episodes follow ten female fighters who will battle for the World Muay Thai Championship. This reality series is produced by Mess Media and is based on the original movie by the same title that aired on Oxygen last year.
  • Who Cares About Girls airs June 24 at 10p; the second installment of this documentary series hosted by Lisa Ling will uncover Slave Girls of India.

CNBC will launch two new original series this summer:

  • American Greed: Scams, Scoundrels and Scandals premieres June 21 at 10p; series will target well-known cases of greed and fraud narrated by Stacy Keach.
  • Best States for Business premieres July 9 and airs through July 13; special series that looks at the best states to do business in during the network’s Power Lunch that airs 12-2p.

Beginning June 1, NBC Universal On Demand and Music Choice are teaming to provide a Music & Movies VOD category that showcases musicians starring in films such as Justin Timberlake in Alpha Dog and Alicia Keys in Smokin’ Aces. The content will feature film clips and music videos from each of the highlighted artists. Viewers can locate the Music & Movies category through the on-demand menu available from participating cable providers.

Bravo will leverage its sister network Telemundo as a cross-promotional vehicle to target the Hispanic market for Top Chef 3 Miami which premieres June 13 at 10p. The various components will include in-show integrations during Top Chef 3 Miami and Telemundo’s morning show Cada Dia, a bilingual webisode cooking series hosted by season two contestant Carlos Fernandez for BravoTV.com and Yahoo!Telemundo as well as weekly bilingual blogs written by Hernandez.

Once again this summer, ABC will air episodes of the ABC Family original series Kyle XY starting June 15 at 8p.

Sundance Channel will debut the first season of the British comedy-drama Shameless on July 5 at 11p. Shameless is about the nutball Gallagher family and their friends and neighbors who all live in Chatsworth Estate, a public housing project in Manchester. Sundance will follow with seasons two, three and four of the award-winning series next year.

NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution has cleared the weekly half-hour series Reel Talk in more than 85% of the U.S. for a national syndication launch this fall. The movie review series has been sold to all 10 NBC Universal O&O stations including WNBC/New York, KNBC/Los Angeles and WMAQ/Chicago as well as stations from broadcast groups including CBS, Gannett, Belo, Hearst-Argyle, Hubbard, Sinclair among others. Reel Talk has also been cleared on WBZ/Boston, WFTS/Tampa and WRTV/Indianapolis. The series, hosted by film critic Jeffrey Lyons and IFC’s Alison Bailes and produced by WNBC/New York, will offer reviews of new films and DVD releases, behind-the-scenes perspectives and celebrity interviews.

MyNetworkTV has confirmed its fall schedule for the 2007-2008 season that includes four reality series and no telenovelas. The weekly line-up looks like this:
Monday – IFC Battleground at 8p
Tuesday – The Academy at 8p and Jail at 9p
Wednesday – Divorce Wars (wt) at 8p and Meet My Folks at 9p
Thursday – My Thursday Night Movie
Friday-  My Friday Night Movie
Saturday – Encore presentation of IFL Battleground

Descriptions of the four new MyNetworkTV reality series are:

  • The Academy – the Fox Reality original that follows trainees going through an 18-week course to become an L.A. County Deputy.
  • Jail – shot on location in various U.S. cities, this series reveals an inmate’s life behind bars.
  • Divorce Wars (wt) – couples agree to live in the “Divorce Wars” house for five days to work out their marital problems.
  • Meet My Folks – a twist on the relationship show where the parents get to decide who dates their daughter, produced by Bruce Nash Prods.

 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Casting Call: Producers of a new reality show on VH1 are looking for a female registered nurse to assist Dr. Drew Pinsky. The pair will work with celebrities going through alcohol and drub rehab programs. The qualified candidate should be in her 20s to early 30s, very attractive, outgoing and TV friendly. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Ted Gold, SVP/Drama Development at Fox Broadcasting has decided to leave his post after just three years.  During his short stay, he oversaw development of both Prison Break and Bones, and well as the unsuccessful Standoff, Drive and Vanished.  He also has several series on the fall schedule including The Sarah Connor Chronicles and New Amsterdam.

Paul Baynton has been named GM of IMS Worldwide, the media planning and analysis software division of The Nielsen Company. Relocating to New York from London, Paul will manage IMS worldwide sales, service and analytics.

MSG Media has added two executives for its MSG Interactive unit: Heather Pariseau is the new VP/Interactive Programming and Operations and Erin Franzman is now Director/Programming. Heather will manage a team that is charged with the programming, definition and execution of related programs and platforms that include online, broadband, wireless, VOD and ITV. Erin will supervise all digital media creative and production of content for the various platforms. 

Peter White has been upgraded to SVP/Logistics with Cablevision Systems Corporation. His oversight will include such supply chain activities as purchasing, consumer equipment forecasting, warehousing, distribution, inventory control, transportation and fleet administration.

John Casey has been promoted to VP/Finance at Cableready, up from his former position as Director/Finance at Cableready. Congrats John!

WestWayne, an independent advertising agency with offices in Atlanta and Tampa, has hired Susan Treacy as Executive Creative Director to increase the company’s creative output. She will report to Scott Sheinberg, CCO.

JBT Media Management, Inc. has tapped Eric Stanton as EVP to supervise all operations pertaining to campaign management, finance and new business development.

ABC was #1 the first two hours with its reality fare: at 8p the America’s Funniest Home Videos repeat delivered a 1.8/7 and at 9p National Bingo Night held steady with 1.8/6. NBC, with an encore of Law & Order at 10p, edged out the competition to win with 1.7/6 at 10p.
