Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 20, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
V-me, a US Spanish broadcast network, will introduce the new short-form parenting series, Las aventuras de eebee (eebee’s adventures), hosted by Latina singer/star/mom, Thalia, at its 2009-2010 upfront presentation today. Created by the Every Baby Company, Las aventuras de eebee aims to engage viewers and their babies (six months and up) as they find play and learning in everyday experiences. The new series will be featured in V-me’s preschool block that also includes the network’s parenting program, Los Ninos en su Casa. The network will also another season LazyTown, among other kid-aimed series.
Brandissimo! increases its ownership stake in the tween/teen-targeted online social community and game site Urbaniacs.com by more than 50%. Additionally, Brandissimo names Traffic Marketplace as the exclusive advertising network to sell ads and sponsorship opportunities on Urbaniacs.com. Brandissimo first teamed with Urbaniacs in 2007.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The Jonas Brother‘s music video for their new single, Paranoid, debuts on Disney Channel this Saturday, May 23 at 7:55p. Additionally, the Jonas Brother will host a behind the scenes look at the making of the music video on Disney Channel, Sunday, May 31 at 6p. Hollywood Records releases the group’s new album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times, on Tuesday, June 16.
The animated series Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s and Chaotic: M’arrillian Invasion join the Cartoon Network line-up beginning next month, June 2009, under a new 4Kids Entertainment deal with the network. Cartoon Network will also air the third season of Chaotic, which is scheduled for delivery in fall 2009. TheCW4Kids, the five-hour Saturday morning broadcast block on The CW, is expected to continue airing the Chaotic series as well.
Boomerang celebrates Memorial Day with a 12-hour uninterrupted action marathon of Teen Titans, Monday, May 25 12p-12a. The original Cartoon Network animated series based on the DC Comics series about a group of young heroes originally debuted on Cartoon Network in 2003.
Awol Animation, a French distributor, secures the first sales for its animated series Just So Stories (10×13). Based on Rudyard Kipling’s book of the same name, Just So Stories is produced by Les Films de L’Arlequin for France 3. The series has been acquired by Rai Cinema (Italy), TV Catalunya (Spain), YLE (Sweden), Canal France International and Botswana Television, with further deals in the works.
Despite newspapers and magazines are folding all around, Premier Studios launches Susie Magazine, targeted specifically at Christian teen girls. In addition to the monthly print magazine, the Susie brand will also include an online community, events and other efforts of interest to teen girls. Susie Shellenberger, teen author and former editor of Focus on Family’s Brio Magazine, created the Susie Brand and she will oversee content development for Susie, with Premier Studios handling design, operations, web development, marketing and publicity.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Lincoln Butterfield Animation enters into an agreement with Fantagraphics Books to publish a graphic novel series based on it new tween/teen-targeted animated TV concept, RIP, M.D. Created by Lincoln Butterfield’s Mitch Schauer (Angry Beavers), RIP, M.D. revolves around Ripley Plimpt, a regular boy whose life turns upside-down when he discovers that monsters are not only real, but are also in need of his unique services as a Monster Doctor. Fantagraphics Books plans to release the first volume of RIP, M.D. in Q1 2010
Fitz Roy Media inks new international licensing deals for Secret Wings, a UK girl-targeted brand. In a Pan-European deal, Spain’s E-Max Ensobrados Martorell signs on to produce a range of kid’s paper based collectibles. Brazil’s Keterly Cateras Bolsas joins as a licensee to produce stationery products (e.g. pencil cases, backpacks, vanity cases, folders, binders, lunch bags and wallets). Introduced by UK licensing agent Brand Champions, Secret Wings was created by Blonde Pilot co-founder Gail Jeeves.
Novel Entertainment appoints Stella Projects as the licensing agent for its property Horrid Henry in Australia and New Zealand. Novel’s licensing partner Copyright Promotions for the Horrid Henry brand, has also recently completed several licensing and merchandising deals including a master toy license deal with Re:creation and an apparel deal with Mothercare. Novel has also signed a DVD distribution deal for the second series of Horrid Henry with Abbey Home Media Group, with other partners including EMI as record licensee, Universal as music publisher and Asylum as electronic game partner. Novel Entertainment is currently in production on 52 new episodes (for a total of 104 episodes) of the 2D animated Horrid Henry series, which are set to deliver this spring 2009.
Bazooka Candy Brands and Fox partner to create and release candy in conjunction wit the release of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs this July 1, 2009. In support of the effort, this month Bazooka Candy Brands will launch a multi-platform merchandising program for its top candy lines (e.g. Baby Bottle Pop, Push Pop, Sliderz and Bazooka Bubble Juice), which will feature characters from the new Ice Age movie. At retail the initiatives will be supported by TV ads running now through July, with print and online ads also planned. Additionally, Bazooka Candy Brands is supporting the campaign with a promotional website IceAgecandy.com, which include three new exclusive games and animated shorts feature characters from the movie and the candy, as well integrated into the Message in a Bottle at babybottlepop.com. Bazooka Candy Brands is a unit of The Topps Company.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Stuart Moulder joins Gazillion Entertainment as VP of Studios. Moulder will be responsible for the overall management of Gazillion’s game development efforts across the company’s studios. He will be based out of Gazillion Headquarters in San Mateo, CA and out of Amazing Society in Issaquah, WA. Formerly GM, Microsoft Games Studios, Moulder was most recently SVP, Screenlife.
