Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, May 13, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Nickelodeon gives the green light on a new mixed live-action/CG animated series, The Troop (26×30), from executive producer Tommy Lynch (South of Nowhere, The Secret World of Alex Mack, etc.) and his Tom Lynch Company, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Writer/producer Jay Kogen (Frasier, Malcolm in the Middle and many others) will serve as showrunner for the new sci-fi comedy series.  Slated to launch in fall 2009, The Troop revolves around Jake, an average teen who wants to create his own comic book series, who is enlisted by a school counselor to join “The Troop”  a secret group that protects the world from monsters and creatures.  The Troop was created by Greg Coolidge (Employee of the Month), Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious) and Max Burnett (Possums).

Indie producers Moi j’aime la television (MJTV) and Helion Pictures unveil plans to produce a trilogy of feature-length movies based on their kid/family-targeted TV series Genie in the House.  MJTV and Helion are attending the Cannes Film Festival (May 13-24) where they are looking to secure financing for the feature-length movies and a distribution deal.  Production on the first of the Genie in the House movies is slated to being in 2010, for release in 2011.  Written by Grant Cathro and Lee Pressman, the movies will be produced by Phil OX, MD/MJTV and directed by Steven Bawol, MD/Helion Pictures.  Currently in its third season, Genie in the House (78×30) launched on Nickelodeon UK and Canal J (France) and has since been acquired in 110 territories.

Fox Animation and Blue Sky Studios are moving forward on their new 3D animated feature film, RIO, per Variety.  The movie follows the adventures of a nerdy macaw leaves his home-cage in a small town in Minnesota and sets his sights on the big city of Rio de Janeiro.  Directed by Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age: The Meltdown, and the upcoming Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs/July 1), Rio is set for release on April 8, 2011.  Fox and Blue Sky most recently partnered on the feature film Horton Hears a Who! (March 14, 2008).

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Toy Industry Association, Inc. (TIA) appoints an Oversight Council for the Toy Safety Certification Program (TSCP) to help to verify that toys entering the US market comply with relevant safety standards and regulations.  Chock full of experts, the Oversight Council will be responsible for a variety of tasks including monitoring the development, implementation and effectiveness of (TSCP); proposing changes to the program to increase value to stakeholders; and reviewing and adopting reasonable recommended changes in the program relating to technical considerations.  Oversight Council members (see exec section below for list of members) will provide guidance as the program adapts to changes in the marketplace.  The TSCP was developed as a direct result of the toy recalls of 2007.

MARKETING/LICENSING

The HUB, The Jim Henson Company’s new division for product licensing for third party properties, inks a deal to serve as the exclusive licensing agent for Kamibashi Corporation‘s The String Doll Gang.  The String Doll Gang features range of handmade string figure characters, each with his/her own unique positive power.  In addition to securing licensees for the franchise in a range of categories (e.g. larger scale dolls, apparel, accessories, home furnishings, stationery, crafts, publishing, and video games etc.), Henson is also looking to develop The String Doll Gang as an entertainment property for features, TV and new media.

Big Tent Entertainment is tapped by Coolabi to represent its Purple Ronnie brand in North and South America.  Under the deal, Big Tent will develop a full licensing program for Purple Ronnie focusing on categories including social expression, publishing, apparel, casual game, gift and novelties for North and South America.

Nickelodeon India and Only Kidz launch a new line of Dora the Explorer products: the back to school product line features an insulated latched sandwich box, sports bottle, sculpted tumbler, Snack N Sip (a drink and snack holder), and food containers; tableware products include a tumbler, plate (three sections), and bowl.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Echo Bridge Entertainment appoints Sonia Mehandjiyska as VP/International Sales, Eastern Europe.  Mehandjiyska is charged with developing the company’s TV and film sales activities in Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Slovenia, Kosovo and Turkey.  Mehandjiyska, who will report to Echo Bridget EVP, Dan March, is headed to the Cannes International Film Festival.  Prior to this, Mehandjiyska was Director/International Sales, MRG Inc., and represented programming from its distribution subsidiaries, Lightning Entertainment and Mainline Releasing.

Nickelodeon‘s premiere of its hour-long iCarly special, iDate A Bad Boy, Friday, May 9, 8-9p was the week’s top overall program among both sports and entertainment programming with Total Viewers 6.5 million, an increase of +183% for the time period last year.  The special also the top basic cable telecast among K2-11 3.3 million, K6-11 2.7 million and Tweens 9-14 2.8 million, up by +174%, +187% and +250% respectively versus last year.
