~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
Lifetime Television is moving ahead with production for a new comedy-drama series called Side Order of Life which will premiere in July. The 13-episode series stars Marisa Coughlan, Jason Priestley, Christopher Gartin and Diana-Maria Riva and is about a young magazine photographer who changes her life and wedding plans after receiving a wake up call. The series is filmed in Los Angeles and is produced by The Jinks/Cohen Company in collaboration with Warner Horizon Television.
CBS has cast Marisa Tomei in the title role of its comedy pilot The Rich Inner Life of Penelope Cloud from ABC TV Studio and CBS Paramount TV. The story revolves around a writer who after much acclaim and success for her first novel, is a little stuck getting the second one written, until she one day has an epiphany.
Showtime has a new project in the works called Possible Side Effects, a drama written and executive produced by Tim Robbins and from producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas. Per Variety, Robbins will also direct the pilot episode if the project moves forward. The story is about a family who work in the pharmaceutical industry as well as the politics and greed that imbed this industry.
Shana Dowdeswell will portray Tatum Sue Holloway in the ABC comedy pilot Family of the Year, from Twentieth Century Fox Television.
Casting Call: If you consider yourself a foodie, enjoy cooking and deconstructing meals at restaurants plus live in the New York tri-state area, you could become a food critic for a prospective new reality cable TV show. Send information about yourself to [email protected]. Also include your age, contact info, the best time to get in touch with you as well as a photo. You may also submit a videotape of yourself while making your favorite dish to: Attn: Foodie, 432 W. 45th Street, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10036.
Casting Call: Would you and your partner like to spend the weekend at Tori Spelling’s new bed & breakfast inn located in the Los Angeles wine country? Oxygen is casting for their latest reality series, Tori & Dean: Inn Love and they are looking for couples who would like to spend THIS weekend at Chateau La Rue. Hurry and send an email with your photos and why you deserve this dream vacation getaway to: [email protected].
Casting Call: Ricochet Television, producer of ABC’s Supernanny, is casting for a new documentary series that will chronicle the lives of families living and raising children in Manhattan. It will be a “day in the life” type of series and the producers are looking for successful, interesting families to appear on the show. If this describes your family or if you know of a family, call 323-904-4680 and mention “Manhattan Families” or send an email to: [email protected] with “Manhattan Families” in the subject line. Be sure and include names, ages, neighborhood/address, phone number, occupations, hobbies, a brief description of your family and what you like to do together.
~ BROADBAND & DIGITAL ~
MySpace will soon allow members to embed clips of Fox TV shows and other Fox-owned videos on their home pages, according to Business Week, opening the door for a huge increase in ad sales due to broader distribution. Fox already streams the latest episodes of many Fox shows in HD on MySpace.com/fox, but enabling embedding would tap into the viral potential of a site that generated 40 billion page views in January, according to comScore networks, more than any other site on the net. The report suggested an announcement could be made as soon as next month.
FX and Fox Television Studios will offer online sneak previews of the first two episodes of The Riches before it premiers on FX March 12. MSN will stream the pilot exclusively from March 7-9, then Yahoo, AOL and TV.com will have it from March 10-12. Episode two will be available on Yahoo March 13-15 then on MSN and TV.com March 16-19.
DirecTV and EchoStar formed an alliance with Google, Intel, Yahoo and Skype to back a national licensing plan expected to take in more than $10 billion if the FCC goes forward with reclaiming and auctioning off a huge block of analog TV spectrum. The additional spectrum, to be freed up following the scheduled switch to digital in February of 2009, could be used to offer consumers new interactive and mobile offerings. The alliance doesn’t mean the companies will bid together, according to a report in Multichannel News, only that they will ask the FCC to permit bidders to aggregate enough licenses to cover the U.S.
As an example of new opportunities available to digital broadcasters, Sinclair CEO David Smith claimed revenues of $20 million or more could be had from retransmission payments for content delivered to mobile devices. Speaking at the Bear Stearns Media Conference in Palm Beach, Smith suggested that mobile TV retransmission payments could eventually eclipse current free cash flow levels, as there is demand for its stations’ content worldwide. Sinclair and Samsung demonstrated a cell phone embedded with a TV Tuner at the Consumer Electronics show in January.
