Yesterday, President Obama confirmed his intent to nominate Julius Genachowski as Chairman of the FCC. Genachowski, who has served as tech policy advisor to the President and was a former Harvard Law School classmate of Obama’s, was tagged for this position several weeks ago. However, his appointment must still be approved by Congress. President Obama said, “I can think of no one better than Julius Genachowski to serve as Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. He will bring to the job diverse and unparalleled experience in communications and technology, with two decades of accomplishment in the private sector and public service. I know him as the son of immigrants who carries a deep appreciation for this country and the American dream; and as the proud father of three children working with his wife Rachel to be responsible parents in this digital age.”

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Following a four-day impasse between Comedy Central and the executive producers of The Sarah Silverman Program over a budget cut dispute, the live-action series will be back for a third season. Comedy Central ordered 10 episodes and the series will now be co-financed with sister cable network Logo. All four executive producers will also return including the show’s star Sarah Silverman, Dan Sterling, Ron Schrab and Heidi Herzon. Utilizing cross-promotions on Comedy Central and Logo, The Sarah Silverman Program will debut season #3 during first quarter 2010.

Food Network started production this week on a new daytime series Sandra’s Money Saving Meals hosted by Sandra Lee. The series, debuting May 10 at 12p, will focus on everyday recipes that fit in Lee’s “triple A factor” cooking philosophy by being “accessible, aspirational and affordable.” Lee will also share shopping and pantry stocking tips to save money as well as leftover dishes from the main recipe, demonstrating one during the show and one via FoodNetwork.com.

As a franchise, High School Musical has become a cultural phenomenon and the fourth movie installment, High School Musical 4 will return to television premiering on Disney Channel in 2010. Featuring an all-new cast of characters involved in a cross-town school battle between the East High Wildcats and the West High Knights, production on the Disney Channel Original Movie begins later this year. Peter Barscocchini, who wrote the first three movies, will be the screenwriter for #4 and Bill Borden and Barry Rosenbush will continue as executive producers.

Rapper legend, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels was tapped to host a new reality series The Kings of Rap from IME Entertainment. Currently in development, the series will spotlight a hip hop competition between young musicians who create positive, non-offensive music with the winner receiving a record deal. Show creator credits go to Martyn Eaden, Eddie Lemons, Ike Solomon and Matthew Earl Jones. Diverse Talent Group’s Christopher Nassif and Mickey Freiberg represent the show.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Shiver me timbers. The highly publicized Pirate Bay copyright infringement trial concluded yesterday in Stockholm with the site’s young defendants claiming that the P2P portal is simply an innocuous piece of internet infrastructure – a tool used to search for content uploaded by others. In closing statements on Monday, prosecutors asked the judge to issue one-year prison sentences to each defendant for enabling illegal copyright infringement. Industry lawyers weren’t that generous, pushing for the maximum penalty of 2 years. The final verdict is scheduled to be handed down on April 17.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The East High Wildcats return in Disney Channel‘s High School Musical 4 (HSM4).  With production on HSM4 set for later this year, the movie is scheduled to premiere on the network in 2010.  This time around the story features a love triangle while a cross-town school rivalry wages with the West High Knights.  Peter Barsocchini, who wrote the previous three movies in the HSM franchise, two for Disney Channel and the third a feature film, is writing HSM4.  Now word on casting for the new TV movie, but based on every interview everywhere the stars of the original cast gave over the last year, who appeared in HSM 1-3, it will be a pretty much all new cast of kids.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.
