In other late-night news, Chelsea Handler signed a new multi-year agreement with Comcast Entertainment Group, keeping her as host and executive producer of E! Entertainment’s Chelsea Lately through 2012. The deal also allows Handler to develop and produce shows for Comcast Entertainment Group’s other networks through her production company, Borderline Amazing Productions. Tom Brunelle, Handler’s partner in Borderline Amazing Productions and head writer on Chelsea Lately, will also continue to be executive producer for the late-night series.

Spike TV picked up the ten-part World War II miniseries Band of Brothers originally produced for HBO and now distributed by HBO. The award-winning miniseries will debut on Spike in third quarter this year.

FOX ordered six additional scripts of its crime drama Bones from 20th Century Fox TV, reports TV Week. This is not considered an official renewal, though a step toward a likely fifth season approval.

WGN America charts new reality territory with the exclusive premiere of Around the World For Free on April 16 at 9p. Around the World For Free goes along with Alex Boylan, winner of The Amazing Race 2, as he journeys across the globe without a dime in his pockets or shoes. The weekly, one-hour series, available in hi-def, airs on Thursdays at 9p and again at 12 midnight and documents Alex’s entire trip covering 16 countries over 159 days and 45,000 miles. Along with his backpack and help from the online community, Alex’s only other companion on this amazing trip is Zsolt Luka who produces, directs, films and edits the series on the road.

Gospel Music Channel (GMC) renewed its talent search series Gospel Dream for a fourth season starting June 27 and scheduled for Saturday nights at 8p. The theme for the new season is “The Greatest Inspirational Songs of All Time.” Solo Gospel/Christian artists, from 16 to 40 years old, are invited to audition where 30-35 contestants will be selected to compete in Nashville. Audition registration information and locations can be found at www.gospelmusicchannel.com/gospeldream .

HBO’s finale of Big Love last Sunday topped its third season with 2.7 million viewers.

WE tv’s one-hour season two debut of The Locator last Saturday at 9p attracted 301,000 W18-49 viewers, 394,000 W25-54 viewers and 823,000 W2+. Beginning this Saturday, the series will air as half-hours at 9p.

UPFRONT 2009: Hallmark Channel

The Hallmark Channel presented their upfront slate at a press luncheon yesterday in New York City, revealing as much about what they will do in the upcoming season as what they won’t do.  What they will do is air 35 original movies next season, all debuting on Saturday nights at 9p, repeating on the following Friday nights.  Each of the films is specifically designed to bolster the Hallmark brand and reinforce the viewers sense of “predictability” in the outcome of the movies – that is, the good guy wins, the good girl gets the good boy, etc.  As Pres/CEO Henry Schleiff puts it, Hallmark is “offering predictability in an unpredictable world,” something he says the viewer is looking for and expects from Hallmark.  Each of these movies will ultimately also be seen on the Hallmark Movie Channel where you’ll find Hallmark original films, the Hallmark Hall of Fame library, as well as “the greatest [acquired] family movies of all time.”

Additionally, coming to the Hallmark Movie Channel is a partnership with the Tisch School of Arts, wherein the network will showcase long and short form student and alumni films, all of which “uplift the human spirit.”  A panel of judges will be formed to chose which films will meet the network’s criteria, and the first judge to be named to the panel is alumni Alec Baldwin.  Films from this partnership will begin airing in October 2009 under the banner “Film Positive.”  What you won’t find Hallmark doing in the upcoming season is original series programming – it’s simply not what they do, and it’s not what viewers are looking for from this network.  Returning however are several off-net series including 7th Heaven, Golden Girls, Little House on the Prairie, Murder She Wrote, M*A*S*H and Walker Texas Ranger.

This day in History: 1954 – RCA manufactured its first color TV set and began mass production.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:    On his series, this character only wore turtlenecks and when they did the reunion show, we learned he later went on to become a fashion designer.  Who is he?  ILLYA KURYAKIN on MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (aka David McCallum, my TV boyfriend when I was a wee bit younger, and now seen as “Ducky” on NCIS)  Kudos to: Gerry Bixenspan-TV Marketing/New York; Rachel Cohen-MediaOcean/NY; Clay Eichelberger-DC Comics/New York; Ron Salcedo-Zimmerman/Nashville; Dan Whitford-RPM Advertising/Chicago; Brooke Romagnano-WNOL/New Orleans; Gina Carey/LA

Today’s Trivia Question:  Can you name the 2 shows: They premiered 6 years apart. Both are multiple Emmy winners, set in police stations, feature seamless multi-ethnic casts, but one is a comedy and the other is a drama.  What are they? (Email
with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
