Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 18, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Apple disclosed some details about the iPhone 3.0 operating system, due this summer. The beta release, now available to registered developers, will deliver 100 new features, including cut, copy and paste (finally!); MMS; landscape view for Mail, Text and Notes; stereo Bluetooth; Notes syncing; shake to shuffle; parental controls for TV shows, movies and App Store apps; a new Voice Memo app and automatic login at Wi-Fi hot spots. Apple also disclosed some stunning figures about the iPhone platform: There have been more than 800 million apps downloaded; there are now more than 25,000 apps to choose from at the App Store and over 50,000 companies have joined the developers program to date.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
This is potentially a huge deal: Marvel Entertainment and Gazillion Entertainment have struck an exclusive 10-year licensing deal to develop massively multiplayer online games based on Marvel’s stable of 5,000 characters. The first game in development is a casual MMO title for younger players based on Marvel’s Super Hero Squad comic. Gazillion also will develop “Marvel Universe,” an MMO game for PC and consoles. Financial details of the licensing deal were not disclosed.
 
Sci Fi’s (soon to be Syfy) new multiplatform licensing and production brand Sci Fi Ventures has partnered with Acclaim Games and ZooKazoo to develop a new series of online casual games and entertainment destinations aimed at the youth market. Developer Acclaim will create an exclusive Sci Fi label to produce games that can then be turned into other properties. Kids virtual world Zookazoo will create a Sci Fi Club within the Zookazoo universe. 
 
After being ridiculed by Democrats on the campaign trail for his lack of digital savvy, John McCain participated in a “ Twitterview” yesterday conducted by ABC News This Week anchor George Stephanopoulos, a first for the hill. The 72-year old Senator has been relying on the microblogging platform to bend his more than 200,000 followers’ ears this month about the excesses of the recently-passed $410 billion federal spending bill. (If only earmarks were limited to 140 characters …)
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Twitter has rolled out some in house text advertising that appears as a box on the home page when you’re logged in. Currently the messages only link to Twitter Search or the new Flash-based Twitter Widget, but speculation is that this will soon be a vehicle for delivering third-party display ads. (Twitter’s Japanese joint venture with Digital Garage, Twitter.jp, has offered display ads since launching last April.)
 
Chappelle Show veteran Charlie Murphy (Eddie’s brother) will star in a new series on Sony’s Crackle.com portal beginning Friday March 20, one of four shows debuting on the site this week.  Crackle shows are also distributed on YouTube, Hulu, MySpace, AOL, Sling Media, Veoh, VCast, Sprint TV and direct to broadband-enabled Bravia TVs. The rest of the line-up includes:

  • The premier of hidden camera show “True Colors” (Wed. from Mar. 18) that pokes fun at racial stereotypes produced by Dwayne Smith and Lisa Bohacek
  • Season 2 of “Anytime with Bob Kushell”  (Tuesdays from Mar. 17) with visits from guests such as Bryan Cranston, Hank Azaria and Alex Trebek
  • A new season of The Jace Hall show produced by HDFilms

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
AOL’s ad selling unit Platform-A announced it is has fully migrated from Google’s DoubleClick to the AdTech online ad management platform it acquired two years ago. The move is expected to deliver cost savings, added customization options and improved efficiencies for advertisers, not to mention enable AOL to take more hands on control of its pricing and traffic data. (However Google still handles AOL’s search business.)
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Who knew? When Discovery founder John Hendricks wasn’t busy running his nonfiction programming empire he found time to invent a digital content delivery system. What’s more, Amazon‘s much talked about e-book reader the Kindle and its electronic book delivery system infringes upon a patent filed by Discovery Communications and Hendricks issued back on Nov. 2007, according to a complaint filed by the cable network yesterday. The company is seeking damages, legal fees and an ongoing licensing arrangement.

A new survey conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation for the New Millennium Research Council that should serve as a reality check to the major mobile carriers: consumers looking to shave expenses plan to cut extras on their plans or even give up subscription-based plans in favor of prepaid phones in the coming months.

Roku‘s $99 digital video player, initially only a device to enable users to view Netflix downloadable titles on their televisions, may add as many as 10 new VOD channels by the end of 2009, per U.S. News & World Report. Roku recently added integration with Amazon’s Video on Demand portal.
 
Packet8 parent company 8×8 released a new MobileTalk mobile international calling service for Blackberry smart phones, including the Blackberry Android, Blackberry Storm and
Blackberry Bold. The service, which utilizes a downloadable app that can reside on any ny Windows, Palm, RIM, Symbian-based or iPhone mobile phone, offers cheap international calling rates such as $.01 per minute to China, $.03 per minute to Mexico, $.04 to the United Kingdom and $.059 per minute to India.
 
Dish Network launched a new app on its Ch. 100 platform powered by Comcast’s Fandango, allowing viewers to purchase movie tickets directly from their Dish Network remote control.

AOL’s Platform-A announced that Dick Freytag has been promoted to SVP of Platform-A, in addition to his role as CEO of AdTech.
 
lan Seiffert has joined Sci Fi in the newly created role of SVP/Sci Fi Ventures, reporting to Dave Howe, President of the network. Ian will begin the new position in May of this year, relocating from Singapore where he currently serves as SVP/Business Development & Partnerships for CNBC Asia Pacific.
 
NBCU’s iVillage Networks has named Angela Matusik as Chief Content Executive, reporting from March 30 to Rebecca Miskin, GM, iVillage Networks, in New York. Most recently a development editor for People.com, Angela is tasked with revitalizing the editorial vision for each of the brands within the Network including iVillage.com, Astrology.com and iVillage.co.uk.
 
Flash memory-based server systems provider Edgeware announced the opening of its U.S. headquarters, based in San Jose, Calif., and the addition of former Motorola sales executive David Appleman to lead all Edgeware sales efforts in the Americas. Stockholm-based Edgeware also announced it secured $8 billion in Series B financing led by new investor Micron Technology.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
CBS’s recently rebranded entertainment portal TV.com announced a slew of new programming deals yesterday to help fill out its ad supported line-up, including agreements with Starz Media’s Manga Entertainment, NCAA, Thought Equity Motion, Smithsonian Channel, Comedy Time, Howcast and WatchMojo. The site is gearing up for a big promotional push to try and expand its user base beyond the current 17 million visitors that Omniture registers, according to TV.com SVP & GM Anthony Soohoo. Launching 9 months after Hulu with content from only one major broadcast partner, TV.com has mostly suffered from that comparison. But it’s trying hard to differentiate itself by trading on its roots as a TV fan site, says Mr. Soohoo. TV.com links directly to the most popular shows on TV even if it doesn’t serve the video; the idea is to get users to come there first if they’re looking to connect to a TV show. They increasingly come to interact with other fans – a recent American Idol poll attracted over 12 million votes. New social features such as the “firestarter” microblogging box that scrolls next to the banner-sized video preview billboard help get the conversation started.
