Conan O’Brien opened his first night as host of NBC’s Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien Monday with a 7.1/17, based on metered households. O’Brien’s inauguration marked the highest Monday results since a January 2005 Tonight Show paid tribute to Johnny Carson. Now here’s one for your schedule — NBC announced Jay Leno’s new primetime show The Jay Leno Show debuts September 14 at 10p.

TLC offers viewers a one-hour preview of new series Masters of Reception June 12 at 10p. The series, produced by Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ MILOJO Productions in association with Original Media, gives an insider look at the successful New Jersey catering business run by the Frungillo family. The Frungillo brothers, Robert and Jerry, run a multiple-room wedding facility and three other upscale facilities, having served the likes of Frank Sinatra to the Pope. Masters of Reception is scheduled to premiere on TLC this fall.

Action sports network, FUEL TV premieres season two of Built to Shred June 28 at 8p. The series features more build-and-ride action sports obstacles using salvaged, reclaimed and recycled materials for more alternative sports “shredders.”

MSG kicks off summer with MSG Summer Block Party with nightly themes beginning at 8p. The programming includes a new original series, Fight Night Classics opening tomorrow as well as new episodes from six returning series in addition to live New York Liberty and New York Red Bulls games. A run-down of each night’s theme and highlights includes:

  • Movie Monday with MSG at the Movies features acquired films and documentaries complimenting MSG’s sports and entertainment brand.
  • Tuesday Concerts with MSG Concert Series showcases a variety of popular concerts and Road to MSG follows top artists and athletes as they prepare to open at Madison Square Garden.
  • Classic Wednesdays with WWE Presents MSG Classics looks back at the most memorable WWE bouts and MSG’s Vault highlights unforgettable events held at Madison Square Garden.
  • Thursday Fight Night, MSG’s newest series documents boxing history’s greatest matches at Madison Square Garden over eight 30m episodes. Series premieres June 4 at 8p.
  • Friday Originals with Fan’s Most Wanted: Knicks and Fan’s Most Wanted: Rangers chronicles historic moments from both franchises.

VH1 digs into the top pop culture questions of all time with a five-night week-long series called The Great Debate opening July 6 at 10p. Michael Buffer, best known as the boxing and wrestling announcer who says, “Let’s get ready to rumble!” will host this series tackling such arguments as Star Trek or Star Wars? Ginger or Mary Ann? to Beatles or The Rolling Stones? Celebrities from Hulk Hogan and Jerry Springer to Tila Tequila and Perez Hilton among others will make appearances and get their chance to debate and available now, fans can also offer their input in several debate areas via GreatDebate.VH1.com.

Last Sunday’s season three debut of Ice Road Truckers on HISTORY at 9p brought in a cool 3 million total viewers as well as 1.9 million A25-54 and 1.7 million A18-49 viewers. Following at 10p, HISTORY’s mammoth new series premiere of Expedition Africa: Stanley & Livingstone opened at 10p with 1.3 million total viewers, 723,000 A25-54 and 640,000 A18-49 viewers.

Also on Sunday night, Spike TV opened its new original weekly series Jesse James Is A Dead Man at 10p attracting the most M18-49 viewers for a non-scripted series debut in the network’s history. The initial episode attracted 422,000 M18-34, 888,000 M18-49, and 465,000 M35-49 and posted a 1.4 HH rating.

Terry Harper, Executive Director of The Society of Professional Journalists passed away today after a two-year struggle with brain cancer.  Harper served from February 2002 through May 2009, and during that time helped restore stability to its headquarters operations and pushed the organization to enhance professional development training programs at the local level and train in partnership with other journalism groups.  He is survived by his wife Lee Ann and two teenage sons, Dale and Jace.  Further information on memorial arrangements will be made available on the SPJ Web site, www.spj.org.

 

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Canadian network CTV confirms the pick-up of two US series and Canada’s third-ranked private network /A also added several US shows to its schedule. CTV’s new acquisitions include:

  • New health and wellness talk series The Dr. Oz Show from Harpo Productions and Sony Pictures Television, airing Monday-Friday at 5p.
  • The Vampire Diaries which opens Thursday nights at 7p
  • /A network, considered Canada’s fourth network added five new programs including Flash Forward; the comedies Hank starring Kelsey Grammer and The Middle headlined by Patricia Heaton; the drama about the modeling world, The Beautiful Life; and the supernatural drama Eastwick.

 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Comedy Central wants more Important Things with Demetri Martin as the sketch comedy series received a second season order. Produced by Jon Stewart’s Busboy Productions, Important Things with Demetri Martin is slated to debut in first quarter 2010.

Casting Call: FOX’s American Idol announces auditions for the ninth season begin June 14 at Gillette Stadium in Boston. Additional cities and venues include: Atlanta’s Georgia Dome June 18; Rose Bowl in Los Angeles June 30; Orlando’s Amway Arena July 9; Denver’s INVESCO Field at Mile High July 14; as well as stops in Chicago and Dallas (dates/venues TBD). Men and women 16-28 years old as of June 12 who are eligible to work in the US are invited to audition. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYMicrosoft and Sony are facing off against each other at E3 this week to see which company can provide the most flexible and compelling platform for games, movies and TV shows. Microsoft’s Xbox Live platform has:

  • enhanced its social capabilities, adding Facebook and Twitter integrations to the Live dashboard and introducing Last.fm music feeds. A new app will enable users to host Live movie viewing parties where you and your friends’ avatars can sit and watch a flick
  • announced that the Netflix-integrated Xbox Video Marketplace will be re-branded as the Zune Video Marketplace, with PPV and sell-through instant availability, soon viewable also on a new Zune HD portable in 1080p resolution with 5.1 sound
  • provided details on Project Natal, the platform’s new Wii-like technology that will take voice commands and track body movement in three dimensions on the screen

Sony officially unveiled the download-only PSP Go, a slightly smaller, lighter version of the portable media device that will be able to access titles you purchase or rent from the PlayStation Store. Sony Computer Entertainment also announced a new deal with Starz Digital Media to offer movies and anime titles on the Sony PlayStation Network from Overture Films, Anchor Bay Entertainment and Manga Entertainment, for rent or purchase in standard or high-def. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Universal and Hasbro announced that Stretch Armstrong, the first feature film to be released under their six-year deal, will open on April 15, 2011, and that Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer is teaming with Hasbro to produce the movie.  Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir will also produce.  Earlier this year Steve Oedekerk (Bruce Almighty, Evan Almighty) was tapped to write the screenplay for the movie adaptation of Stretch Armstrong.  Universal and Hasbro formed their partnership in early 2008 and unveiled plans to produce at least four movies based on popular Hasbro brands. Currently in development are Monopoly, with Ridley Scott set to produce and direct and Pamela Pettler writing the screenplay; Candyland, with Kevin Lima to direct based on a script from Etan Cohen; Clue, with Gore Verbinski to produce and direct; Ouija, with Michael Bay to produce; and Battleship, with Peter Berg to direct from a screenplay by Jon and Erich Hoeber.  Full edition: CYN KIDS

Saturday – A18-49 Analysis: NBC made the winning goal with A18-49 viewers Saturday night at 1.7/7, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC’s Stanley Cup Final #1 dominated the night starting at 8p with a 1.6/8 followed by FOX and a 1.2/5, the average of back-to-back Cops episodes. Hockey on NBC scored the highest rating during 9p at 1.9/7 while FOX trailed in second with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.3/4. NBC skidded a little through 10p yet prevailed with the Stanley Cup final at 1.7/6 followed by CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery repeat at 1.2/4.

At 7p, ABC’s long-running America’s Funniest Home Videos claimed first place with an encore episode at 1.5/5 followed by FOX’s sitcom repeats King of the Hill/American Dad averaging a 1.2/4. FOX led at 8p with rerun editions of The Simpsons/King of the Hill averaging a 2.3/7 while the opening game 2 final of the Stanley Cup on NBC took second with 2.1/7. It was a ratings reversal at 9p as NBC’s Stanley Cup final game 2 skated to #1 with 2.6/7 and FOX’s Family Guy/American Dad reruns were close behind at 2.5/7. NBC had no close competitor during 10p as the last hour of the Stanley Cup final won with 2.5/7 with CBS’ The Unit encore next at 1.3/3.

At 8p, CBS and NBC shared #1 as NBC’s anticipated reality competition series I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! opened with a 2.4/8, matching the average of CBS’ rerun comedies Big Bang Theory/How I Met Your Mother also at 2.4/8. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Former Conde Nast Digital executive, John Vaccaro joins Juicyorange, LLC as Marketing and Strategy Partner. John will be in charge of developing new client accounts and advising the firm’s clients on with marketing and strategy solutions.

USA Network elevated Alex Sepiol to VP/Original Scripted Series Programming. Alex’s primary duties will include overseeing USA’s series Burn Notice and In Plain Sight in addition to the newly approved pilot White Collar. Alex will continue to report to Jackie de Crinis, EVP/Original Scripted Programming.

Gospel Music Channel (GMC) named Paul Butler to the position of SVP/General Counsel up from VP/Business Affairs and Development, the role he has held since he joined GMC in 2006. Paul will now supervise the legal and business affairs of the network as well as human resources, strategic development of additional business prospects, program licensing and consumer products. Paul reports to Charles Humbard, Founder/President, GMC.

Larry Gilbert was hired by independent studio, E1 Entertainment as VP/Current Programming to manage productions in progress in the US and Canada. Larry previously worked for Icon Productions as VP/Television Development and before that held stints at UPN, 20th Century Fox, New Line Cinema and CBS. In his new role at E1, Larry will report to Noreen Halpern, President/Dramatic Programming.

Golf Channel upgraded Melissa Colgate to Senior Director/Strategic Partnerships where she will be the network’s primary contact to the LPGA Tour pertaining to strategic partnerships, sponsorships involving title sponsors and LPGA Tour marketing partners. Melissa will continue to report to Tom Knapp, VP/Strategic Partnerships.

Roxanne Motamedi was promoted to VP/Entertainment for North America at Getty Images. Roxanne joined Getty Images in 2001 and in her new role will lead all entertainment units based in North America and global activities encompassing assignments, distribution and production.
