Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 3, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Universal and Hasbro announced that Stretch Armstrong, the first feature film to be released under their six-year deal, will open on April 15, 2011, and that Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer is teaming with Hasbro to produce the movie.  Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir will also produce.  Earlier this year Steve Oedekerk (Bruce Almighty, Evan Almighty) was tapped to write the screenplay for the movie adaptation of Stretch Armstrong.  Universal and Hasbro formed their partnership in early 2008 and unveiled plans to produce at least four movies based on popular Hasbro brands. Currently in development are Monopoly, with Ridley Scott set to produce and direct and Pamela Pettler writing the screenplay; Candyland, with Kevin Lima to direct based on a script from Etan Cohen; Clue, with Gore Verbinski to produce and direct; Ouija, with Michael Bay to produce; and Battleship, with Peter Berg to direct from a screenplay by Jon and Erich Hoeber.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Fox International’s BabyTV launches on Sky Mexico, a supplier of Direct to Home (DTH) pay-TV services in Mexico, with a localized Spanish-language channel. BabyTV now available in Mexico via Sky Channel 324 in the Kids Mix as well the Fun, Movie City, HBO/MAX & Universe packages.

Teletoon (Canada) launches season two of Lucasfilm Animation‘s Star Wars: The Clone Wars this fall 2009.  Beginning this September the network will air season one of the series as well as the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars feature film, with season two following that.  Star Wars: The Clone Wars will also launch on the French language Teletoon network this fall.

The stars of High School Musical, including Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, Lucas Grabeel, and Corbin Bleu, among others, will again host the special Sing-Along and Dance-Along presentations of the Disney Channel Original Movies HSM and HSM2, Saturday, June 20, 711p on Disney Channel.  Beginning Thursday, June 18, fans can log on to DisneyChannel.com for printable song lyrics and choreography instructions for numbers in the movies.

LICENSING INTERNATIONAL EXPO 2009

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and the LEGO Group ink a worldwide deal develop construction sets based on Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 franchise.  The LEGO Ben 10 Alien Force line is scheduled to launch in the US in spring 2010, and will roll out in additional territories thereafter.

Scholastic Media will serve as licensing agent for RES Interactive‘s Toots, which is based on the virtual world www.tootsville.com .  Targeted to K6-12, Toots features 150 different colorful elephants (called Toots) and a range of environments, games and customizable opportunities.  Scholastic Media aims to create a licensing program for Toots including plush, key novelty and accessories as well as also partners in apparel, stationery, domestics, toys, publishing, gift, novelty, video games and games and puzzles.

Fox Licensing & Merchandising (Fox Licensing) is launching its biggest global film merchandising campaign in its history for the release of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which opens July 1, 2009.  Fox Licensing has inked 200+ licensees worldwide for the movie, the third installment in the Ice Age franchise.  Ice Age deals around the world include:

  • Two of the biggest in the US are with HarperCollins (story and puzzle books) and Hallmark (cards and party goods);
  • In Latin America, more than 15 Ice Age 3 promotions are set with partners such as Kraft, Bimbo, Sabritas/Frito Lay and Casino.  Fox Licensing has made a direct-to-retail deal with La Falabella (apparel, underwear, sleepwear, blankets, thermos, duvet, melamine set, beach towels and plush dolls) in Chile, Peru, Argentina, and Colombia for.
  • In Europe, international theatrical promotional partners include Ferrero for products across the ‘Kinder’ range, and Unilever for a range of Ice Age 3 ice creams.  Finnish/Swedish ferry line Tallink Silja will decorate five of their cruise ships with an Ice Age 3 theme, creating an ‘Ice Age Play Land’ on board.  Fox Licensing has also signed direct-to-retail deals with C&A across multiple territories, and with X5 in Russia, the latter which will launch a range of Ice Age 3 branded household products in 1,500 stores across the Russian Federation, as well as an Ice Age themed retail promotion in 196 of their largest stores.

LazyTown Entertainment inks a licensing deal with Redoubt, a unit of UK video game developer Rebellion, to create video games based on the preschool series LazyTown for release for Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 3 and PCs.  The agreement was brokered by AT Brands, which serves as LazyTown’s worldwide licensing agency and consultant for the interactive games category.

Playmates Toys introduces a new toy line based on Nickelodeon‘s iCarly.  Launching fall 2009, the new iCarly product line includes tween-targeted customizable, collectible vinyl figures, an interactive playset with character recognition that allows kids to control the chatting between the characters with phrases from the show, and electronic role play accessories, such as Sam’s Remote.

New Beyblade animated episodes and toys on the way.  Nelvana Enterprises and d-rights Inc., a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corp., are co-producing the new series titled Beyblade: Metal Fusion (51 episodes) that will launch in North America in fall 2010, with the companion toy line produced by Tomy CompanyHasbro is named as the master toy licensee outside of Middle East and Asia.  Nelvana Enterprises will represent d-rights in various countries, distributing the TV series internationally, as well as for merchandising rights and home video.  The new Beyblade: Metal Fusion TV series and toy line has already launched in Japan.

Brown Shoe Company and Marvel Entertainment are partnering to create footwear for kids and adults featuring characters from Marvel’s upcoming movies.  Brown will design, produce and market several footwear collections, including athletic, casual, sport sandals, beach and EVA sandals, boots and slippers.  The first collections debut at retail in spring 2010 for toddlers, youth and young adults and will feature Iron Man 2, which opens May 7, 2010.

WowWee is developing toys based on the Bear Crimbo, the protagonist of an upcoming kid’s book, with its WowWeeAlive technology.  Under its licensing agreement with Bear Crimbo property owner EMGIE, Inc., WowWee will release its line of plush toys, figures and animatronic products based on the Bear Crimbo’s story, around the world.  Set for release in September 2009, Bear Crimbo is written by Matt Goss, published by Hilton Publishing and will be distributed by Ingram Publishing Services.

HIT Entertainment names American Greetings as the master social expressions licensee for its brands including Angelina Ballerina, Barney, Bob the Builder, Fireman Same, Rainbow Magic, Thomas & friends as well as its acquired properties including Chapman Entertainment’s Fifi and the Flowertots and Roary the Racing Car and Aardman Animations’ Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep and Timmy Time.  American Greetings plans to design/manufacture/distribute/market social expressions items, such as party supplies and decorations, greeting cards, invitations, stickers, gift packaging and seasonal items, for HIT’s brands beginning this spring.

Amberwood Entertainment completes a DVD deal with Magna Home Entertainment for RollBots.  Under the deal Magna will release the first season of RollBots (26×30) on DVD across Australia and New Zealand following the broadcast on Network 10 in 2010.  4Kids Entertainment is the global merchandise licensing agent for RollBots.

BBC Worldwide expands its licensing relationship with VTech to key international markets for the preschool property In the Night Garden.  BBC Worldwide and VTech inked a licensing partnership last summer for In the Night Garden last July for the UK, and now grows to include France, Spain, Benelux, Scandinavia.  The TV preschool series is produced by Ragdoll Productions.

Felix the Cat Creations, Inc. appoints Character Arts and Licensing Street as co-licensing representatives.   Character Arts will serve as the exclusive licensing agent for Felix the Cat, while Licensing Street will work with Character Arts to jointly manage all Felix licensing and retail initiatives in the US and Canada.

Atari Interactive and Zizzle toys enter into a worldwide partnership to produce a line of original, self-contained handheld videogames for 2010 as well as key chain games to launch in 2011.  First year titles feature classic games include titles such as Pong, Super Breakout, Asteroids, Crystal Castle and Centipede among others.

Classic Media launches a new consumer products program for its holiday related brands, which includes Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, Casper the Friendly Ghost (serving as ambassador for Halloween) and Peter Cottontail (representing Easter).  New deals for 2009 include:  M. Hidary will introduce new light-up and non-light-up kid’s apparel, rolling out for Halloween 2009; Signature Brands will release seasonally-branded popcorn tins for holiday 2009; Kurt Adler debuts a new line of holiday ornaments and decor based on Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town; Round 2 produces nativity sets and figurines based on The Little Drummer Boy for 2009.

Speed Racer Enterprises introduces new online and mobile brand extensions for both Speed Racer: The Next Generation and the classic animated Speed Racer series.  The iTunes App Store features a Speed Racer App.  Full-length episodes of both series can be found at online TV providers including YouTube and Hulu, Joost, and Crunchyroll.  Fans can also use their skills to create mashups (using their photo, videos and audio with Speed Racer characters) via MashOn.  On the mobile side, under a deal with Nokia consumers can watch both series via ZooVision on pre-programmed on Nokia’s new N97 handsets beginning this summer.  Speed Racer Enterprises is also revamping its website ( www.speedracer.com) to include a secure online world.
