~ MORE STUFF ~

Amidst the hullabaloo, TLC’s reality show Jon & Kate Plus 8 will continue though the couple’s marriage will not. During Monday’s episode, the couple announced they were filing for divorce in the state of Pennsylvania and this episode posted the network’s highest ever rating among A18-49 at 5.7 with 6.5 million viewers as well as 10.6 million total viewers. TLC also said production on the show will go on a temporary hiatus until August 3. For next week, TLC will air a retrospective of the couple’s marriage over the last 10 years. Future episodes of Jon & Kate Plus 8 will feature both Jon and Kate, though each separately with the kids. TLC made a 40-episode commitment to the series for its current fifth run and to date only six episodes have aired.

Ed McMahon, 86, best known as Johnny Carson’s sidekick for 30 years on NBC’s Tonight Show, died Tuesday of multiple ailments at UCLA’s Ronald Reagan Hospital. In addition to appearing on Tonight Show from 1962-1992 and uttering the now-famous words each night: “Heeeeeeeere’s Johnny!,” McMahon also hosted the syndicated talent show Star Search from 1983-1995. In addition, McMahon was a prolific host of television specials over the years from The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade to America’s Junior Miss Pageant and for 15 years co-hosted the yearly Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. McMahon made a multitude of appearances on television series playing himself and also co-hosted TV’s Bloopers and Practical Jokes with Dick Clark. His feature film credits include The Incident (1967) and Fun With Dick and Jane (1977). Before a career in show business, McMahon enlisted in the Marines during World War II and served as a fighter pilot and later became a fighter pilot instructor and a test pilot. Later, McMahon was called back to active duty during the Korean conflict and flew 85 combat missions. He received six medals and was eventually promoted to the rank of colonel.

July could get even hotter as FOX opens season six of Hell’s Kitchen featuring Chef Gordon Ramsay with a two-hour premiere episode on July 21 at 8p. During each episode, Ramsay grills and goads each of the sixteen chef hopefuls, eliminating one each week with the final contestant receiving the Head Chef position at Araxi Restaurant in Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. The winner will also work with executive chef James Walt during the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The series continues with one-hour episodes on Tuesdays at 8p the following week. Hell’s Kitchen is produced by ITV Studios (formerly Granada America) in collaboration with A. Smith & Co. Executive producers are Arthur Smith and Kent Weed.

July will continue to sizzle as Bravo premieres season two of The Real Housewives of Atlanta on July 30 at 10p. Four of the southern housewives return  Kim, Lisa, NeNe and Sheree and are joined this season by new housewife, Kandi. True Entertainment produces The Real Housewives of Atlanta for Bravo.

ABC Family delivered 2.1 million A18-49 viewers; 1.4 million A18-34 viewers; and 4.7 million total viewers for the second season opener of The Secret Life of the American Teenager this past Monday at 8p. Following at 9p, ABC Family premiered its new series Make It or Break It which attracted 606,000 A18-34 as well as 511,000 W18-34 and 840,000 W18-49 viewers.

Universal Sports announces its new series, Pieces of ’08, Beijing Stories, showcases the inspiring and unforgettable stories of athletes and events from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The series, hosted by NBC writer/reporter Jimmy Roberts, debuted this last Monday and the twenty total episodes will air weeknights at 7p through July 17, leading up to the Swimming World Championships held in Rome. Encore airings of the show are presented at 11p the same evening and again the following day at 12p.

David S. Allen, former President/CEO of Petry Television, died last Saturday at home in Kailua, Hawaii following a long illness. David started his career in the mailroom of New York Advertising Agency after he served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War in the Pacific Theatre. He then began his television career at The Katz Agency, where he remained until August 1978 when he joined Petry Television and later served as President and CEO until his retirement in December 1992. He is survived by a son, David S. Allen, Jr., of Sarasota, FL, and a daughter, Heather Allen Shank of Kailua, HI, and several grandchildren, including a set of twins. He was predeceased by his wife, Jane.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

AMC is heading into production on its third drama pilot, handing a 12-episode order to Rubicon, reports THR. The political thriller stars James Badge Dale whose character Will Travers is a smart analyst working at a national think tank who realizes his bosses are not what they seem. Co-stars include Miranda Richardson, Jessica Collins, Christopher Evan Welch and Lauren Hodges. The production schedule has not been set yet by production company Warner Horizon.

British actor Callum Blue was cast as General Zod, Superman’s arch enemy in the new season of Smallville on The CW, per THR. General Zod originates from DC Comic books and was featured in the 1980 feature film Superman II.

Beginning November 16, production of daytime courtroom coverage on truTV under the title In Session will move to HLN in Atlanta to utilize the production facilities of both HLN and CNN, cites B&C. HLN will manage production and studio shows in Atlanta, adding production and on-air staff to In Session, though job losses are expected in New York where the coverage is currently based. truTV will also move its affiliate marketing efforts to Atlanta where the network’s sister networks under Turner Broadcasting reside.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Cable companies have a much better chance at spreading TV everywhere if they work together. Time Warner Cable and Comcast have called a press conference for Wednesday morning to announce a partnership on the walled garden TV Everywhere initiative that will place cable TV programming online behind a walled garden. Jeff Bewkes, Chairman and CEO of Time Warner, and Brian Roberts, Chairman and CEO of Comcast, will be in attendance. Both companies have been testing authentications systems to authenticate cable subscribers as they go online or to mobile devices to view shows.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Can video games be good for kids?  According to a report from The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop an investment in research-based digital games can improve kid’s health and learning.  The report Game Changer: Investing in Digital Play to Advance Children’s Learning and Health provides recommendations for a new framework to use games to help kids learn healthy behaviors, skills like reading and math, as well as critical thinking, global learning and programming design.  The report outlines 30+ examples of learning and health games and research projects.  It includes a list of federally funded game R&D projects in which the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health and the Department of Education have invested.  The report is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Pioneer Portfolio, and was unveiled at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.  Full edition: CYN KIDS

Saturday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX notched another Saturday night win, doing best with the A18-49 demo at 1.3/5, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX won at 8p with a double dip of Cops rerun episodes at 1.2/6 followed by ABC’s rebroadcast of Wipeout at 1.0/4. FOX stayed on top through 9p with AMW: America Fights Back at 1.4/5 while CBS’ second Crimetime Saturday came in second with 1.0/4. CBS was #1 at 10p with 48 Hours Mystery at 1.1/4 with NBC’s Law & Order: SVU repeat and UNIV’s Sabado Gigante tying for #2 at 0.9/3 each.

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: FOX and NBC shared the #1 spot Sunday night with each posting a 1.5/5 among A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. CBS opened the night a winner at 7p with 60 Minutes at 1.1/4 while FOX’s repeat airings of King of the Hill and American Dad averaged a second place 0.8/3. Despite more reruns, FOX won at 8p with the average of The Simpsons/King of the Hill at 1.7/6 followed by the premiere of NBC’s new fantasy series Merlin at 1.3/4. Almost the same scenario occurred during 9p as FOX’s encores of Family Guy/American Dad did best at 2.0/6 and NBC’s second helping of Merlin was next at 1.4/4. CBS ended the night a winner as the Without a Trace repeat won with 1.4/4 and ABC’s Impact Part 1 was a close second with 1.3/4.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis: Everything was coming up roses for ABC Monday night as the network delivered the A18-49 audience with a 2.0/6, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC’s The Bachelorette sailed through the 8p hour a winner with 2.2/7 followed by a three-way tie between FOX’s House repeat, NBC’s I’m A Celebrity . . . and UNIV’s Cuidado con el Angel all at 1.6/5. During 9p, ABC’s The Bachelorette and the average of CBS’ encore comedies Two and a Half Men and Big Bang Theory tied for first place at 2.4/7 apiece and UNIV’s Manana para Siempre was the lone second place holder at 2.0/5. Then at 10p, CBS’ CSI: Miami encore stood out with a 1.8/5 followed by UNIV once more, this time with the weekly Cristina at 1.5/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

UK-based Diverse, a division of Zodiak Entertainment, named Alan Brown as Creative Director for the entire Diverse Group. Alan is a well-known executive producer and for the last decade has worked on successful formats including factual entertainment, comedy panel shows and documentary series.

Former VP/Mobile Entertainment at Sony Pictures Television, Andy Bishop joins the mobile social gaming community, Cellufun as VP/Business Development. Andy will be based at Cellufun’s New York Wall Street office.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) tapped Lisa Chang as SVP/Human Resources. Lisa will head HR support for the company’s Technology, Strategy & Operations and International units. Based in Atlanta at TBS, Inc.’s corporate headquarters, Lisa will report to Loretta Walker, Chief Human Resources Officer. Previously, Lisa was with The Weather Channel Companies, Inc. for the past 11 years serving most recently as EVP/Human Resources.

Mark Hulsey takes on the new position as VP/Production and Executive Producer with the Big Ten Network. Mark will relocate to Chicago following a nearly ten year stint as Executive Producer at Fox Sports Midwest/Fox Sports Indiana/Fox Sports Kansas City since 2000.
