Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 24, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Can video games be good for kids?  According to a report from The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop an investment in research-based digital games can improve kid’s health and learning.  The report Game Changer: Investing in Digital Play to Advance Children’s Learning and Health provides recommendations for a new framework to use games to help kids learn healthy behaviors, skills like reading and math, as well as critical thinking, global learning and programming design.  The report outlines 30+ examples of learning and health games and research projects.  It includes a list of federally funded game R&D projects in which the Department of Defense, National Institutes of Health and the Department of Education have invested.  The report is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Pioneer Portfolio, and was unveiled at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.


BBC Worldwide Australasia selects six local kid-targeted productions for its initial CBeebies Production Initiative, in association with CBeebies in the UK.  Finalists will get their chance at a formal pitch in Sydney next month.  The selected pitch will earn funding of up to $250,000 per programming hour from BBC Worldwide Channels Australasia.  The commissioned project will premiere on CBeebies in Australia and the UK, and on other CBeebies’ channels around the world.  Whittled down from 100 entries, the short listed productions are: project – production company

Universal picks up the movie rights to author Larry Doyle’s (I Love You, Beth Cooper book and movie) teen centric comedy/adventure book Go Mutants!, an upcoming novel, per Variety.  Doyle will pen the script with Imagine Entertainment‘s Brian Grazer to produce.  The story is set in a high school where all of the legends from 1950s alien come to Earth movies came true, and now the kids of those alien creatures have assimilated into the local culture and hang with the more earthly kids.  According to the report, Doyle’s novel, which HarperCollins will publish next summer, and the movie will feature cameos from 50s movies such as Gort, the robot from The Day the Earth Stood Still, and the creature from the black lagoon.


Noggin premieres its new primetime music special Let’s Hear It For The Laurie Berkner Band!, Sunday, July 12 7-8p.  Hosted by Noggin’s Moose A. Moose and Zee, the special features 17 music videos from The Laurie Berkner Band including three new videos, My Family, which was created exclusively for the channel, Five Days Old and Fast and Slow.  Moose A. Moose and Zee will play interactive music and movement games during the special.  The Laurie Berkner Band’s most recent CD, Rocketship Run, is a Two Tomatoes Records release and distributed by Razor & Tie Entertainment.

ValCom‘s MyFamilyTV inks another distribution deal for KidMango programming block.  Under the new deal with digital network i-Lifetv, KidMango is cleared in an additionally 12 million homes, making it available in 42+ million homes in the US.  KidMango will launch on i-Lifetv from next month.  A joint venture between ValCom and PorchLight Entertainment, the KidMango block features kid-targeted programming such as Jay Jay The Jet Plane, Jakers, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego and Dennis The Menace.  Later this year the i-Lifetv channel plans to re-brand as Halogen TV.

Love Our Children US partners with Kenn Viselman presents …, the creators of the preschool property The Oogieloves, for a public service announcement (PSA) for the campaign to Stomp Out Bullying, an initiative of Love Our Children USA.  Like a range of other celebrities The Oogieloves, Goobie, Zooie and Toofie, will appear in a Stop Out Bullying PSA, which aim to reduce bullying and cyberbullying, decrease school absenteeism and truancy, educate against homophobia and racism and deter violence in schools, playgrounds and communities across the country.  The Oogieloves will star in The Oogieloves In The Big Balloon Adventure, a new interactive musical movie produced by Viselman, which is currently in production, and stars Cloris Leachman, Chazz Palminteri, Christopher Lloyd and Jaime Pressly.

The tween-targeted online social gaming network is available on Spil Games sites GirlsGoGames .com and Agame .com.  SuperSecret features 20 customizable characters, 30 secret searches, interactive environments and 40+ mini games.  Developed by San Francisco-based SuperSecret, launched earlier this year and also has distribution deals with WildTangent and Addicting Games.

In other news, the Netherlands-based Spil Games has added Disney‘s Club Penguin virtual world to several of its tween and/or family portals, including (France), (Brazil), (UK), and (US).  Originally launched in English in fall 2005, Club Penguin recently opened a French version and a Portuguese version of the site.


Cartoon Network‘s live-action block CN Real premiered two of its new series on Saturday, June 20, BrainRush (8p) and Destroy Build Destroy (8:30p), earning the network increases with K6-11 and Tweens 9-14.  Compared to the same time period last year BrainRush was up among K6-11 +20% and with Tweens 9-14 +55%.  Destroy Build Destroy increased with K6-11 by +34% and among Tweens 9-14 by +38%.

Nickelodeon‘s premiere of its original TV movie Mr. Troop Mom, starring George Lopez, on Friday, June 19, 8-10p, was basic cable’s top original TV program for the night with 4 million total viewers (P2+), according to information provided by the network.  The TV movie was also tops for the night across broadcast and cable TV among K2-11 1.9 million, K6-11 1.6 million and Tweens 9-14 1.2 million.
