CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

06/21/06

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 21, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Actress Brittany Murphy will lend her voice to the title role in in Disney’s upcoming CG animated feature movie Tinker Bell slated for release in fall 2007 by DisneyToon Studios and Walt Disney Home Entertainment.  The movie tells the story of Pixie Hollow and Tink’s new friends.  And if you are wondering who previously was the voice of Tinker Bell, don’t make yourself crazy: this is the first time the spunky and opinionated fairy has spoken in an animated movie.  The movie will support the Disney Fairies franchise (like the Disney Princess franchise), which launched last year with Disney Publishing’s novel Fairy Dust and the Quest for the Egg.

TVHead, the games-on-demand TV network, has partnered with Hit Entertainment to develop education based interactive games specifically for preschoolers based on Hit properties.  Slated to launch in 4Q 2006, each of the games will include a number of activities. Included are a Barney game which will focus on music and imagination; the Thomas & Friends will feature navigation and problem solving activities; Bob the Builder will highlight teamwork, spatial relationships and problem solving; and Angelina Ballerina will target dancing, friendship and determination.  Using TVHead’s technology, which plugs directly into existing VOD infrastructures (read: no special set-top boxes), kids/families will be able to play these games using their standard TV remote controls.

MORE KIDS STUFF

After a spectacular run of 42 years the BBC will bid so long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen and goodbye to its weekly music series Top of the Pops, on July 30 (episode number 2204).  While the BBC said the decision to end the popular series was a difficult one, the broadcaster explained its “Creative Future Music Strategy has concluded that in a rapidly changing musical landscape Top of the Pops no longer occupies the central role it once did.”  That said, the disappearance of the weekly Top of the Pops is not totally the end of the road – BBC Two will continue to air its series Top of the Pops 2, an archive show, which occasionally includes a new performance as well as specials.  Confirming its commitment to music programming, the BBC will introduce several new music programs and continue with others such as a contemporary music series on BBC One; The Seven Ages of Rock, a new series on the history of rock called for BBC Two; extended coverage of the Reading/Leeds Festival on BBC Three; and a long-running series that explores the roots of soul music called Soul Britainnia on BBC Four.

Nick Jr. has picked up a second season of the animated series, The Wonder Pets!  The groundbreaking series which premiered March 3, 2006, has consistently ranked among the top three preschool programs on all of commercial television.  Created and executive produced by Josh Selig of Little Airplane Productions, Inc., in the unique animation style called photo-puppetry animation, The Wonder Pets premiered on Nick Jr. in March of this year, where it airs weekdays at 11a.  The series has been sold to 67 countries including countries in South America, the Caribbean, Europe and Asia and Asia Pacific.

Disney Channel has ordered a second season of its animated series The Emperor’s New School.  The series currently airs Saturdays on Disney Channel at 9:30a, and on Toon Disney at 12:30p.  Targeted to K6-11 the series is based on Disney’s animated theatrical movie The Emperor’s New Groove (2000).

  • Genius will serve as the DVD distributor of The Big Comfy Couch in the US, under a newly completed deal with Amity Entertainment, Inc., which holds the worldwide merchandising and licensing rights to the preschool TV series.  Amity has granted Genius the DVD and audio distribution rights to 100 episodes of The Big Comfy Couch, including the new season (22 eps) premiering this year on public TV in the US.  Amity and Genius also plan to release Spanish language DVD’s of the series.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Brad Globe has officially taken on the role of President, Warner Bros. Consumer Products.  Globe takes over the reins from the division founder and former President, Dan Romanelli, who in January of last year announced Globe as his successor.  He will oversee all WBCP’s business functions, including domestic and international licensing, worldwide marketing, business and legal affairs, finance and retail business development.  Globe joined WBCP Products in February 2005 as EVP/GM.  Previously Globe was with DreamWorks SKG where he established its consumer products group, where he set up programs for Jurassic Park, E.T., American Tail, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Land Before Time, and both Steven Spielberg Presents Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs, and Shrek and Shrek 2.  Romanelli will now serve in a creative entrepreneurial role within WBCP.
