Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 17, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Fairy Muppet Abby Cadabby is the host of the new preschool series 3, 2, 1 Vamos! (52×30), which premieres on Discovery Kids Latin America on June 22.  Co-created by Sesame Workshop and Discovery Kids Latin America, 321 Vamos will feature segments from Sesame Workshop’s Play With Me Sesame and Global Grover and introduce kids in Latin America to Bert and Ernie’s Great Adventures.  To support the series, Abby Cadabby (in walk around form) will appear at Discovery Kids hosted events throughout Latin America.

Twilight headed to German TV.  Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 Group picks up the exclusive free TV rights to a package of 30 films, including Summit Entertainment’s Twilight, from Herbert Kloiber’s Tele Munchen Group.  Other titles featured in the movie package (and they aren’t all for kids) include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Babylon A.D., and Knowing, as well as a selection of TV movies and the US mystery series Sanctuary.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Looks like a fifth Indiana Jones movie is heading our way, or so says Shia LaBeouf, who starred in last year’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.  In an interview with BBC News, LaBeouf said, “Steven [Spielberg] just said that he cracked the story on it before I left and I think they’re gearing up.” Spielberg is an executive producer on LaBeouf’s new movie Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, which is directed by Michael Bay.

Marc Haimes, a one-time executive with DreamWorks turned screenwriter, will write the adventure movie Family History, currently being developed at Fox, per THR. Haimes says the movie is, “an adventure about a family on a treasure hunt through time.”  The project has been shepherded by producers Cormac & Marianne Wibberley, who co-wrote Disney’s two National Treasure movies.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network Asia Pacific is the new home for Marvel under a new deal that will see several of Marvel’s animated series joining the network’s lineup.  As part of the output deal, Cartoon Network will become the exclusive partner for Marvel’s next three productions including Marvel Super Hero Squad, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and Thor, which are set to launch in 2010, 2011 and 2012 respectively. 

The Teen Choice 2009 nominees have been unveiled and leading the pack is Twilight with 12 nods, followed by High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Miley Cyrus and Gossip Girl with 10 nominations apiece.  Additionally, Jonas Brothers, who serve as this year’s Teen Choice hosts, received nine nominations, with American Idol trailing just behind with seven nods.  Recognizing teen favorites in movies, TV, sports and fashion in many categories, Teen Choice 2009 airs Monday, August 10, 8-10p on Fox. Tweens/teens 13-19 are invited to vote once each day for their favorite nominees at www.teenchoiceawards.com.

Amberwood Entertainment inks a broadcast deal with M-Net (South Africa) for the CG animated series RollBots (26×30).  The series will a launch on M-Net’s kid network KTV in September 2009.  RollBots currently airs on YTV (Canada) and will bow this fall on TheCW4Kids (US), The CW’s Saturday morning block.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Carson-Dellosa Publishing enters into a deal for the licensing rights to produce a line of The World of Eric Carle branded classroom decoratives featuring the Carle’s collage style illustrations featured in his picture books.  The new The Very Hungry Caterpillar Bulletin Board Set will be available July 2009 at www.carsondellosa.com and at teacher supply stores throughout North America.  Chorion handles licensing for The World of Eric Carle and Carson-Dellosa is part of Cookie Jar Group’s Cookie Jar Education.

Classic Media expands its partnership with Center Parcs for characters from the stop-motion animated 3D CGI TV series Rupert Bear  Follow the Magic.  Under the deal Rupert Bear and his pals will b featured in live mini shows at the Center Parcs Holiday Villages in the UK and other branded kid-centric activities such as meet and greets, nature trails, workshops and picnics and tea parties.

CPLG Canada, sub-agent for Jim Benton’s It’s Happy Bunny brand, completes two new license deals for the property with Calego (bags, storage, stationery) and Stoneridge Cycle (bikes, skateboards, scooters, protective gear).  The products will be available fall 2010.

Maclaren, the baby buggy and products company, steps into the nursery furniture category as it acquires the juvenile modern furniture company, NettoCollection.  David Netto, founder NettoCollection, will continue his involvement with the brand and will collaborate with Maclaren to design and develop new collections and other juvenile products.

Correction:  4Kids Entertainment has completed new licensing deals for the animated property Dinosaur King in the UK and Ireland with Aykroyd & TDP Licensing and Smith and Brooks.  And the series currently airs on Jetix and GMTV Kids in the UK.

Luke Bradley-Jones is appointed EVP/Managing Director for BBC.com, the international version of the BBC’s website run by BBC Worldwide.  Bradley-Jones, who joined BBC Worldwide in 2006, most recently served as EVP/Digital Media and Business Development, BBC Worldwide in New York.
