Cynopsis: Kids!

06/10/09

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 10, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Twilight fans continue their devotion as the trailer for Summit Entertainment‘s second movie in the series, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, sets online viewing records.  In its first week, since debuting during the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, The Twilight Saga: New Moon trailer had 10.6 million video streams across its domestic launch partners, MySpace and MTV.com.  The trailer views on MySpace set a new record for the site with a total of 4.2 million online views within the first 24-hours and a total of 7.8 million within the first seven days.  The trailer also received a total of 2.8 million online views on MTV.com within the first week.  Additionally, 5.3 million viewers watched the 2009 MTV Movie Awards.  In case you have been vacationing for a while on an anti-vampire planet, The Twilight Saga: New Moon will be released nationwide November 20, 2009.

When Warner Bros. releases Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (finally) on July 15, the movie will be available nationwide in traditional movie houses but in only two Imax theaters that day, NY and LA, per THR.  Imax fans in most of the country will have to wait another two weeks until the movie opens wide in Imax on July 29.  The snag in the Potter Imax release plan trails back to the studio’s decision to shift the movie’s release from fall 2008 to summer 2009, which coincides with Paramount’s July Imax release window for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (it opens in traditional theaters on June 24).  Though Imax investors worried at the Potter news, Imax shares fell 4%, this could work out well for Imax and Warner Bros. too.  Harry Potter fans have waited about as long as they are going to wait  so I’d guess that if they are able to fans are going to flock to see the movie in traditional theaters and then, given the Imax version features 12 minutes of 3D footage, they are going to head right back to the theaters two week later to see the Imax version too.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The feature film adaptation of Hanna-Barbera‘s animated futuristic series The Jetsons might begin production as early as 2010, per an interview with director Robert Rodriguez (Spy Kids movies, The Adventures of Shark Boy & Lava Girl, and lots of movies for older audiences) and MTV News.  The Jetsons is expected to be a live-action movie  but the director did not confirm this in the interview.  Rodriguez, who has been developing the project for some time, says he has reworked an early draft of the script by Adam F. Goldberg (Fanboys).
