Cynopsis: DIGITAL

06/10/09

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 10, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The Boston Globe‘s largest union narrowly rejected a $10 million concession package from its owner the New York Times Co. that the company insists would have insured that the paper stays in business. Guild members voted 277 to 265 to reject the company’s contract offer, which included pay cuts, health and retirement benefits cutbacks and the elimination of lifetime job guarantees for more than 150 Globe veterans. The Times imposed a 23% pay cut on union members an hour after the vote was held – a move that could spur legal battle involving the National Labor Relations Board, according the Boston.com. New York Times Co. said the paycut will achieve the savings it needs to keep the paper running.

Sorenson Media
announced that its Sorenson 360 video delivery network (VDN) now supports direct-to-iPhone video publishing without requiring the user to install a separate iPhone app. The company hopes the solution will prove to be a popular workaround to access Flash-based formats on the device as Apple continues to resist integrating with the ubiquitous Adobe video format.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Global IP traffic is expected to increase fivefold from 2008 to 2013, approaching 56 exabytes per month in 2013, up from approximately 9 exabytes per month in 2008 according to new research from Cisco. Most of the bandwidth will be consumed by video; By 2013, the sum of all forms of video (TV, VoD, Internet video, and P2P) will exceed 90% of global consumer IP traffic, says Cisco. Meanwhile mobile traffic data will double each year from 2008 to 2013. Nearly 64% of the world’s mobile data traffic will be video related by 2013.

Traffic to Facebook grew at steady clip in May, increasing 8% from the previous month to 82.9 million uniques according to an analysis of the hottest social networking service by web analytics firm Compete noted by Inside Facebook. Facebook Connect integrations generated another 65 million visitors bringing its total audience to 113 million uniques. By comparison, MySpace uniques increased by 2% to 56.9 million uniques while Twitter flattened out after its huge April bump to

ComScore concurred that Bing got off to promising start last week, as Microsoft Sites increased their daily penetration among U.S. searches from 13.8% the previous week to 15.5% for the week ending June 6. Microsoft’s share of search result pages in the U.S., measuring overall search intensity, increased from 9.1% to 11.1% during the same time frame.

The use of social networking services to look for work is on the rise but hiring managers prefer professionally-themed LinkedIn 2 to 1 over Facebook and 3 to 1 over Twitter, according to a new survey from Jump Start Social Media. When actively looking to fill spots the disparity is even more apparent. Of the hiring managers surveyed, 66% of hiring managers visit LinkedIn, 23% visit Facebook and 16% use Twitter to find job candidates to fill openings.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

To underline its findings that internet traffic will increase fivefold by 2013 (see above), Cisco released a trio of new consumer applications that allow users to track how much bandwidth their daily activities consume, how fast their iPhone or BlackBerry Storm internet connection is, or how much traffic your website can expect to get over the next 5 years.

Google
announced that its cloud-based Google Apps enterprise software solutions will now synch with Microsoft Outlook, allowing premiere and educational users to access Google’s gmail and calendar services through the Office interface. Google charges $50/year for its Premiere Apps suite.

Novelists are increasingly turning to digital platforms to build rabid communities of fans for their books. (They can’t all be as lucky as Twilight author Stephenie Meyer; she’s so popular that she decided she doesn’t need her MySpace page anymore, making stepheniemeyer.com her exclusive web home.) Writer J.C. Hutchins is promoting the release of his new supernatural thriller Personal Effects: Dark Art with a multimedia partnership that invites readers and members of the cult SuicideGirls pin-up community site to undertake a digital scavenger hunt of sorts. SuicideGirls will debut videos, clues and photos of “personal effects” from the career of the book’s protagonist, art therapist Zach Taylor. Readers can delve further into the story by reading emails, listening to phone calls and watching video blog entries. Personal Effects character Rachael Webster is also “guest blogging” at SuicideGirls, writing its “Hit Play” gaming column. (She also has her own blog at PixelVixen707.com.) Fans are also encouraged to hack into Dr. Taylor’s profile page at the Brinkvale Psychiatric website to learn more about those committed.
