~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Upcoming premium TV service, Epix, a joint venture from Viacom, Lionsgate and MGM landed its first carriage agreement with Verizon Communications’ FiOS TV. The deal covers five years and allows Verizon the ability to serve up Epix a la carte and in packages with its broadband service. Epix’s linear channel is slated to launch this October. Also at launch time, Epix will have 300 hours of content available through subscription VOD and through its website. Later, both companies will launch a mobile product targeting Verizon’s more than 4 million VCast subscribers. For its debut, Epix will roll out such films as Paramount’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Marvel’s Iron Man, MGM’s Pink Panther 2 and Lionsgate’s My Bloody Valentine 3-D among others. Epix’s special features via on-demand and online include directors’ script notes, outtakes, auditions and trivia and games.

Retirement Living TV (RLTV) is adding the venerable gardening program The Victory Garden to its daytime lineup on August 3 at 11a. The Victory Garden, airing for 30 years, ranks as television’s longest-running gardening program featuring gardening experts offering landscaping, cooking and eco-friendly advice.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT  ~

FX approved the new original drama Lawman, ordering 13 episodes with plans to debut the series next spring. The drama is developed by Graham Yost and based on Elmore Leonard’s character “Raylan Givens” from his short story Fire in the Hole. Timothy Olyphant has already been cast in the lead. Sony Pictures Television and FX Productions share production credits while Yost wrote the pilot and will serve as executive producer/writer on the series. Leonard will also be executive producer on the series as well as Sarah Timberman, Carl Beverly and Michael Dinner.

TV Guide Network inked talent agreements with Carrie Ann Inaba, best known as one of the judges on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars series and Chris Harrison, host of ABC’s reality series The Bachelor. Together the duo will host TV Guide Network’s live Red Carpet shows beginning with the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards. They will also host live Red Carpet coverage of the Golden Globe Awards, Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, Grammy Awards as well as the Academy Awards in 2010.

Speed handed a 13-episode order for Dangerous Drives, a series commissioned from Pangolin Pictures that travels along with drivers on risky everyday missions such as transporting dangerous criminals or heavy loads, cites Multichannel News. Shot in hi-def, the series will open with four episodes on Thanksgiving Day. Speed will also offer the series to cable systems for their VOD platforms and long-form content will be available via iTunes, Hulu and Sprint in addition to “best of” clips on iTunes, Sprint, AT&T and MobiTV.

Canadian-based The Nightingale Company is developing a new comedy series called Us & Them with “By Any Means Necessary Productions” starring Aubrey “Drake” Graham and Mazin Elsadig, both of Degrassi: Next Generation fame. The pair will portray two best friends, though opposite in personality, as they navigate the entertainment industry.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  To date, the Chinese government has prevented most foreign cable programming from reaching Chinese households. That said, the web is probably the best way to introduce professionally produced programming to the territory as China now boasts the world’s largest web audience with some 338 million users (some 60 million souls fewer than China’s TV audience.) Baidu, operator of China’s leading search engine, and Discovery Channel have launched a new website in China featuring branded science, technology, space, natural history, engineering, paleontology, archaeology, history and culture content – the first of its kind with a U.S. programmer. Baidu, which enjoys about a 60% market share of search in China, will have responsibility for the overall management of the site and Discovery will be the exclusive content provider with both companies sharing in ad revenue. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  New York City‘s NYC TV and V-me have teamed up to officially launch NYC TV Kids Presents V-me Ninos, NYC’s first educational Spanish-language programming block targeted to K2-7.  NYC TV Kids Presents V-me Ninos can be seen on NYC TV Channel 25, Monday through Friday, from 7:30a – 10a.  NYC owns NYC TV.  The programming lineup for NYC TV Kids presents V-me Ninos includes: Plaza Sesamo; LazyTown; Five Minutes More/Cinco Minutos Mas; Pororo; The Baby Triplets/Las Tres Mellizas Bebes; Bruno & the Banana Bunch/Bruno y los Banana Amigos; and Boowa & Kwala.    Full edition: CYN KIDS
