Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 15, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney Channel‘s new original TV movie Wizards of Waverly Place the Movie will premiere Friday, August 28 at 8p.  Based on the network’s Wizards of Waverly Place series, the movie is chock full of special effects and follows the Russo family on a Caribbean vacation where Alex accidentally casts a magic spell that makes it so her parents never met and the quest to find the ‘Stone of Dreams’ to reverse the spell.  In support of the movie:

  • will feature two-part game, Journey to the Cave of Darkness and Quest for the Stone of Dreams; fans can collect hidden objects that unlock bonus behind-the-scenes footage from the movie.
  • In the week leading up to the movie debut, Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Jake T. Austin and Jennifer Stone will each introduce their favorite four episodes the series, Monday-Thursday, August 24-27 (6-8p).
  • On Friday, August 28 (12n-8p) the net, hosted by all four stars, will air all 16 episodes, with a simulcast on Sprint TV and MobiTV.
  • Additionally, a preview of the movie will be available via Disney Channel on Demand through Time Warner Cable, Cablevision and Verizon FiOS, as well as RCN, Blueridge, Wide Open West, Comspan, Knology/PrairieWave and Ntelos affiliates.

Qubo debuts a second round of user-generated animated short films, quboPics, on qubo Channel as well as on qubo’s broadcast blocks on Ion Television, NBC and Telemundo beginning Thursday, July 16.  Kid animators created the quboPics by logging onto where they used the application titled Zimmer Twins.  From there qubo selected 14 short films to be expanded into fully animated mini-movies for broadcast.  Created by Roe design, the Zimmer Twins area on the website, which features the twins Edgar and Eva, includes storytelling tools, pre-made animated clips and simple editing instructions to help kids create and tell their stories, while also emphasizing the basic elements of sentence structure, grammar, and writing techniques.  The property is licensed to qubo by Bejuba! Entertainment.

The Telegael Group, a producer of live-action and animation, and Studio Solas, both based in Ireland, have partnered to open a North American office in Los Angeles, according to IFTN.  Producer Norman Siderow (Stardust) will head up the new US office.  In establishing relationships with US companies through the new office, Telegael and Studio Solas aim to promote their respective facilities, access to Irish tax investment funds and the lure of international co-productions and Irish locations.  Together Telegael and Studio Solas produce the tween-targeted live-action series Aifric for TG4 (Ireland), and is being distributed internationally by Cake Entertainment.

Susannah McFarlane, former co-owner, MD and Publisher of Hardie Grant Egmont, launches her new publishing company, Lemonfizz Media (LFM) and signing of new partnerships, including a deal with Scholastic in Australia and New Zealand.  LFM plans to focus a small number of publishing projects at one time, developing them across a range of platforms.  Two series are currently in development and slated to launch in early 2010:

  • EJ12, Girl Hero – an adventure series for girls 7-10, featuring girl heroes doing and solving things.
  • Boy v Beast – a fantasy battle series for very young and reluctant reading boys.  The series is being created in partnership with educational consultant and publisher Louise Park and her Paddlepop Press.  Park is also the author of Zac Power Test Drives.
  • Additionally, McFarlane has written a multi-title picture book series that, while not part of the new LFM-Scholastic partnership, will be published by Scholastic in 2010 and 2011.

Decode Enterprises inks deals in Asia and Australia for the preschool series Super Why!  Acquiring the literacy-based series are Tooniverse (Korea), TV 12 (Singapore), Astro TVIQ (Malaysia and Indonesia), True Visions (Thailand) and Nickelodeon Australia.  Produced by Out of the Blue Enterprises in conjunction with Decode Entertainment, with Decode Enterprises holding the worldwide TV right to the series excluding the US.

Comic book and graphic novel publisher, Boom! Studios, enters into distribution deals with publishers in the Simon & Schuster for the US and HarperCollinsCanada for Canada.  Founded in 2005, this spring Boom! launched its new imprint Boom! Kids, which includes titles based on Muppets, Pixar and Disney properties.

  • The pact with Simon & Schuster is a sales and distribution agreement, under which Simon & Schuster will handle sales, distribution and fulfillment for all new and backlist Boom! titles to trade and specialty accounts in the US.
  • HarperCollinsCanada signs on to distribute Boom! original and licensed graphic novel titles in Canada beginning this July.


Casting Call:  The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in association with Mirage Studios, 4Kids Entertainment and TMNT Productions are looking for you.  Together they will host an open casting call for those 14-years or older (those under 18 will need adult permission) with martial arts expertise for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, which is slated for release in 2011.  They are specifically looking for folks to be part of the TMNT nemesis, the Foot Clan. The open call will be held this Saturday, July 18 at Hollywood & Highland (at the Grand Staircase) in Los Angeles.  What you’ll need, a 30-second martial arts demo of yourself (just you), photo and resume … ah … and no sharp weapons please.


E1 Entertainment appoints Swin Chang as Director/Development for Kids and Animation, E1 Television.  Based out of E1’s headquarters in Toronto, Chang reports directly to Frank Saperstein, SVP/Kids and Animation in LA.  Previously, Chang served as Executive in Charge of Production, Family Channel and Playhouse Disney in Canada.

Sasha Junk is named VP/Public Relations, Kidz Bop.  A public relations veteran, Junk will develop and promote Kidz Bop brand platforms including audio and consumer products, website, live events, brand extensions, and strategic partnerships across all media platforms.  She will also work with the management team to build the brand, including the recently re-launched website aimed at kids 13 and younger.  Junk was most recently SVP and MD, The Morris + King Company.  Previously, she was Head/Global Corporate Communications and Publicity, Classic Media, and prior to that was with Bender/Helper Impact.  Congrats Sasha!
