Cynopsis: DIGITAL
07/15/09
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, July 15, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
A day after HBO joined the fold, CBS became the first broadcast network to sign on to the Comcast On Demand Online trial, slated to begin in a sample of 5,000 homes across the U.S. later this month. The move is an example of a major media player reaching out to possible future revenue streams in spite of the current competitive landscape. The network’s TV.com site competes directly with Comcast.net and Fancast in the entertainment portal business; CBS is the only major broadcast network not part of Hulu; and CBS is the only network without sister, dual revenue stream cable networks. It must rely on retransmission agreements to survive, agreements Comcast has been vocally reluctant to sign.

In another reactive move against Netflix, Blockbuster struck a partnership with Samsung to embed a tuner in select broadband-connected televisions and Blu-ray players to enable viewers to instantly stream Blockbuster rentals. Blockbuster also launched its own $99 set-top last fall that stores and streams paid rentals on a television. Samsung is expected to launch the Blockbuster-integrated devices this fall.
Major League Baseball‘s in-market online streaming service, launched on a trial basis by Cablevision and YES for Yankees games and by Cox for Padres games, may eventually match the MLB.tv online video service in revenues, according to MLB executives quoted by Sports Business Journal. MLB.tv is expected to generate $40 million in revenues in 2009.
Discovery’s Science Channel hopes to harness a little viral video magic, hiring White People Problems co-creator Zach Selwin to host a new show in which contestants compete using their scientific ingenuity to blow stuff up or otherwise obliterate it. This music video lays out the premise of Catch It Keep It, which premieres on the channel on Friday at 10 pm ET/PT.
Despite its provocative title, Playboy.com‘s new online video series Uncovered is actually a show about music. It features bands such as Dinosaur Jr. covering the works of The Cure, one of their favorite bands.
The Wall Street Journal has launched a separate career site FINS.com targeting jobs in the financial industry.
Mobile video start-up QuickPlay Media closed on a new round of $12 million funding led by GMP Securities L.P. with participation from existing partners General Catalyst Partners, JLA Ventures and Ventures West. Online video production outfit Generate, led by former CEO of the WB Jordan Levin, added an additional $2 million in funding to go with the $6 million it raised last spring, per paidcontent.org.
Break.com is teaming with Comcast’s G4 to co-produce a UGC-themed segment on the network’s Web Soup show, linear TV’s latest attempt to program around goofy internet videos. Break will hand pick outrageous, bone-crunching stunt attempts for the show (the kind that the lawyers insist must be accompanied with the “don’t try this at home” warning at the bottom of the screen.) There are a few posted a this co-branded channel on Break.com.
Virtual gaming company Outspark closed on an $8.3 million round of series C financing led by new investor Syncom Venture Partners with participation from previous investors SBI Investment and Mille Plateaux. Outspark, which specializes in ad-supported massively multiplayer online games, has produced games and apps for BestBuy, Yahoo! Games, YouTube, Xfire and Meebo, among others.

Local ad spending on social networking sites will total at least $641 million this year, about 20% of the total $3.3 billion expected in the U.S. for 2009, according to new projections from Borrell Associates. Over 50% of all local social-networking advertising is going to two sites – Facebook and MySpace – the only two sites generating more than $100 million from local advertising placement.
Levity Productions, Levity Management, Triage Entertainment and branded entertainment production co. Medium formed a new multiplatform marketing service that specializes in increasing buzz and maximize online reach for its comedian clients. Levity Entertainment Group, whose production arm puts together shows and specials for Comedy Central, TBS and Showtime among others, has also launched a new subscription-based digital marketing service dubbed E-comic branding, providing distribution and marketing services.
Online classified ad software provider Adicio added The Seattle Times’ NWHomes.com to its Adicio Real Estate platform.
Brightcove announced availability of a white label online video platform for the Japanese market, coming out of the majority-owned subsidiary it founded last year with partners Dentsu, J-Stream, transcosmos and Cyber Communications. The company is offering a 30-day free trial program to encourage adoption in the famously cautious Japanese market.
MySpace will have its work cut out for itself in trying to become an entertainment portal as the site’s ability to contribute traffic to other Entertainment/Multimedia destinations has declined steadily in recent quarters, according to a new analysis from Hitwise. Back in 2006/2007 MySpace was second only to YouTube in that category, but it has since dropped to deliver less than 10% of the traffic to that category.
Customers have downloaded more than 1.5 billion apps from the App Store during its first year in operation, Apple announced yesterday. The App Store now contains more than 65,000 apps created by more than 100,000 developers in 77 countries around the world.
ClipSync is a new Facebook app that allows users form “viewing parties” around TV shows. The ad supported application, which will be presented initially around CBS’s Big Brother 11 and the Young and the Restless, enables users to send out invites to their friends then tune into an online synchronized video. Lob virtual tomatoes at the screen, insert comment bubbles and make gestures with your avatar.
The Financial Times jumped into the competitive iPhone app space with its own news application providing news, commentary, analysis and data on stocks, currencies, commodities and companies.
Gannet’s USA Today launched a new website dubbed Newsdeck that aggregates top news stories in thematic topics such as News, Money, Life and Sports.
Molly Battin is moving from her role as a branding strategist and digital head for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies to lead the Turner Media Group as SVP, reporting to Kelly Regal, EVP of TBS, Inc. A show that credits online buzz for finding its original audience, NBC’s The Office has always put a sizeable effort into its digital extensions. A new trend is to up the game during summer rerun season to recruit new coverts and make sure that the old ones come back in the fall. The online-only web series The Office: Blackmail follows Creed Bratton’s attempt to dig up dirt on his co-workers. (Fans can participate by sending their own blackmail threats to friends.) A new golf-themed casual game for the iPhone presents 4 9-hole putt-putt courses with links to full episodes of the show. The Dunder Mifflin Infinity social network is keeping members busy with games like “ Where’s Dwight?” Kelly and Ryan are (sporadically) having it out on Twitter. All in all, there’s some pretty funny stuff here and for the most part the show’s deadpan tone, which should be reflected in all of its digital components, comes shining through.
