NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
DIC Entertainment and Thomopoulos Productions, an indie TV/movie producer, have established Promise Media Productions, a joint venture focusing on kid and family centric content for the secular and faith-based markets. The production company will acquire and develop original live-action and animated properties that will be marketed and distributed under the Promise Media brand across multiple platforms. Thomopoulos Productions is helmed by its founder Tony Thomopoulos, who previously served as the head of the ABC Broadcast Group, United Artists Pictures, Amblin Television, and MTM Entertainment, Inc. Promise Media TV, movie and home entertainment projects currently in development:
- New animated movie versions Black Beauty based on Anna Sewell’s classic novel, and Ben Hur adapted from Lew Wallace’s book, Ben-Hur, A Tale of the Christ.

- The Animated Adventures of Sophie and Sam, the property is based on the kids book Sophie and Sam: When To Say “Yes” and When To Say “No”, by Tori Cloud, which in turn promotes the beliefs laid out in Boundaries, a book for adults by Cloud’s husband Dr. Henry Cloud and John Townsend.

MORE KIDS STUFF
The N will add Dawson’s Creek, the hour-long drama about the day-to-day hormonal teen angst of five friends, to its programming line-up next month. Acquired earlier this year from Sony Pictures Television, The N welcomes Dawson’s Creek with a 12 hour marathon including the first 12 episodes of season one on August 15, 6a-6p. The rest of the series (6 seasons/128 eps) will begin airing regularly weeknights from August 16, 7p.
Singer/actress Jessica Simpson has been named as a co-host of Teen Choice 2006, the 8th annual awards special, which will air live on Fox, August 20, 8-10p. No word yet as to who will serve as Simpson’s co-host on the show. Simpson is nominated in three Teen Choice categories this year.
Ten PBS member stations have picked up and debuted Nanalan’ (41 x 30 min), a pre-school targeted series, under a new 7-year distribution pact between PBS and Picture Box Distribution. More PBS stations are expected to add the show beginning this fall. Created, produced and written by The Grogs, puppeteers Jamie Shannon and Jason Hopley, Nanalan’ is produced by Lenz Entertainment. It’s about the adventures of 3yr-old Mona as she and her dog/friend, Russell, explore at her Nana’s home. Several of the Nanalan’ characters first appeared in a series of shorts that were then developed into the half-hour series, which premiered on Canada’s CBC in 2003.
Three former executives from FUNimation have established Illumitoon Entertainment Ltd., a new privately held company that’s mission is to acquire anime titles from Japan to bring to the US. Illumitoon’s first big acquisition is Toei Animation’s series Beet the Vandel Buster (78 eps), which is based on the Shonen Jump manga, and currently airs in Japan on TV Tokyo. Additionally, Bandai produces toys based on the series for the Japanese market. Illumitoon Entertainment is based in Fort Worth, Texas
MARKETING/LICENSING
Team Baby Entertainment, a producer of sports DVDs for babies/toddlers, has entered into a licensing deals with the NBA, NASCAR Images, and Major League Baseball Productions to develop and release a new series of DVD titles.
