01/09/08

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, January 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the CES convention in Las Vegas.

In his Tuesday morning keynote at CES, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts outlined several key strategic initiatives designed to keep the nation’s largest MSO relevant in the digital world. “Project Infinity” will deliver higher “wideband” speeds next year, which he demonstrated by downloading Batman Begins in 4 minutes. He promised a 10-fold increase in the number of HD titles on Comcast’s VOD platform, from 1,000 movies in 2008 to 3,000 in the near future. And he unveiled a new souped up version of Fancast.com that will offer viewers more than 3,000 hours of TV content from NBCU, CBS, Fox and Viacom which can be wirelessly transferred to customers’ home DVRs. At the heart of the “Comcast 3.0’s” initiatives is the long-awaited adoption of Open Cable Platform “Tru2way” set tops allowing developers to write interactive applications once for the entire cable industry. Such interoperability will be necessary if cable hopes to keep up with innovation already whetting consumer appetites for portability, interactivity and social functionality.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

NBC.com today announced a slate of new content timed for midseason. Lipstick Jungle’s Bonfire Magazine will launch on online zine, in partnership with iVillage. Knight Rider, American Gladiators, Celebrity Apprentice, quarterlife and Baby Borrowers will also launch new sites this month, featuring exclusive video and interactive components. Meanwhile the latest chapter of “Heroes Evolution” will allow users to peruse case files, company records and video clues to help solve a detective story.

Sundance Channel
launched a channel on Verizon’s VCast service including video clips from prior Sundance Film Festival coverage, animated and live-action short films and Sundance Channel original programming. Updates from this year’s Sundance Film Festival will also be available from Jan. 17-27.

Viacom announced a series of web syndication deals with start-ups Daily Motion, Go Fish, iMeem, MeeVee and Veoh, offering video content from Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon VH-1 CMT, Logo, The N, Spike TV, AtomFilms and GameTrailers in the coming weeks. Shows to be distributed include The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Hills, iCarly and The Salt-N-Pepa Show. Existing MTVN distribution outlets include AOL, Bebo, Comcast’s Fancast, Joost and MSN.

English-language Japanese manga/anime purveyor TokyoPop is also getting its own VCast channel, offering titles such as Bizenghast, Rave Master, PiNMeN and FMW.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

CBSNews.com is integrating with social news discovery site Digg.com on its Campaign ’08 coverage. Headlines from campaign and candidate-related stories discovered and chosen by Digg’s audience will be featured on CBSNews.com and the familiar “Digg buttons” will now appear at the bottom of all CBS News stories.

Universal Music Group signed a licensing agreement with SendMeMobile.com making a selection of hit songs available as ringtones on the mobile media platform. SendMeMobile sells ringtones on both an a la carte and subscription basis.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Talk about killing the golden goose. Word on the street is that the CES convention is shopping other venues as the CEA and attendees suffer from sticker shock over rising costs of hotels and exhibition space. CES, a fixture in Vegas for 31 years now, has signed leases with the city through 2011.

Sony Pictures Television announced a distribution agreement with digital media company DivX allowing online retailers to offer secure downloads of Sony TV shows and movies to PCs for playback on any DivX certified device. It is the first endorsement of DivX by a major content provider.

Paul Allen’s set top start-up Digeo outlined a new services strategy and announced new integrations with photo service Flickr, music service Finetune, casual gaming provider Accedo Broadband and news service CloverLeaf Digital LLC. All four services will be available as free features in the Moxi Multi-Room HD DMR, Moxi Home Cinema HD DMR and Moxi TV for PC products to become available later in 2008.

Gemstar-TV Guide signed a multi-year IPG product license agreement with Polaroid Labs giving Polaroid the right to incorporate the company’s IPGs such as its newest “Data Loader” version into select DVRs and digital televisions manufactured by Polaroid.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Major record labels will become increasingly marginalized as revenue from CD sales continue to plummet, and artists keep a larger share of revenue from digital sales, according to a new Yankee Group report entitled “U.S. Digital Music Forecast: What Fate Awaits the Record Labels?” US Digital Music Revenue is forecast to reach $5.34 Billion by 2012 but labels’ share will be insufficient to cover losses from CDs.

A new study by Integrated Media Measurement Inc. should make folks at the studios sleep a little easier. It found that players of the latest installment of first-person shooting game Halo still have time to watch their favorite shows and go to the movies. Prior to the launch, Halo 3 players watched an average of 27.1 hours of television per week; following the launch, the same group watched an average of 26.9 hours of television per week.

“D is for Digital,” a new report released at CES’ Sandbox Summit by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, analyzed the current marketplace for kids digital content. Findings include a shortfall of digital educational products, recommendations for better communication between the research community and media developers and a call for protection of children from growing commercialism.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group upped Samantha Maltin to SVP/Integrated Marketing and Partnerships. She will manage relationships between Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group assets including Nick Jr., Noggin, The N, Nicktoons Network, Nick at Nite, Nickelodeon magazines and Nickelodeon’s digital assets.

Darryl LaRue has joined Broadband Enterprises as EVP of Operations and Marketing. He will report directly to Matt Wasserlauf, CEO.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

The newly-redesigned MSNBC.com, unlike the channel still a joint venture between NBC and Microsoft, became the first major online news outlet to allow users to embed videos on other sites this week. Users can simply pull up the site’s new Flash-based player by clicking on a featured clip then select “email” or “embed” at the bottom of the player to send it along. The feature should be viewed as a step in the right direction by pro-proliferation critics such as Jeff Jarvis, who has long called for enabling free sharing of debate footage and other important news web video.

Correction: SPE is taping Jeopardy! on the CES floor next year. That should give the crew a little more time to prepare that set.
