Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 25, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

CBS and Cookie Jar Entertainment inked a three season deal extension for Saturday mornings.  Set to be announced soon, the 2009-10 programming line-up will continue to feature girl-targeted shows as well as other programs.  Additionally, the Cookie Jar block will rename the block which was programmed by DIC Entertainment since 2006.    Cookie Jar, like DIC before it, takes an active role in securing sponsorship for the block and is now in discussions with key advertisers for the upcoming season.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The upcoming Spider-Man Broadway musical, Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark, is set to officially open on Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the Hilton Theater.  Based on Marvel’s super hero, the show features music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and The Edge, and is directed by Julie Taymor (Broadway’s The Lion King, among many others), who also co-wrote the show with Glen Berger.  With previews set to begin on January 16, 2010, tickets for Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark will go on sale this June.  The musical is produced by Hello Entertainment, Marvel Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Jeremiah Harris.  Additionally, the show is produced in association with Omneity Entertainment, the Mayerson/Gould/Hauser/Tysoe Group, Patricia Lambrecht and Jam Theatricals/S2BN Entertainment.  While actress Evan Rachel Wood has said that she will star in the show as Spidey’s girlfriend Mary Jane, casting will be announced soon.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Breakthrough Entertainment inks new license deals for several of its series including the animated preschool series Fishtronaut (26×30), which has been sold to Turkey (network TBA), as well as Al Jazeera Kids (Middle East).

MIP TV Program Call: If your company will be attending and showcasing programming at MIP TV 2009 in Cannes, France, at the end of next month, Cynopsis will send out a special MIP TV Shopping Guide edition the Wednesday before the conference. MARKETING/LICENSING

Activision Publishing picks up the rights to develop and distribute video games based on the Bakugan from Nelvana.  Based on Spin Master’s Bakugan toys and the animated Bakugan TV series, the games are currently in development at the Japanese studio NOW Production.  The Bakugan games are set for release in fall 2009 for Xbox 360, PlayStation3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2.

Entertainment Rights enters into a multi-year deal with Ludia Inc., to create video games based on Where’s Waldo? for multiple platforms including consoles, PC/Mac, iPhone and iPod touch.  The first game in the series, Where’s Waldo?: The Fantastic Journey is set for release across several platforms later this year.  The deal is part of Waldo’s 21st birthday celebration.

Nickelodeon UK‘s Nick Jr channel signs a two-year partnership with Butlins for a live family-targeted theatrical tour of three Butlins Resorts starting this year.  Families visiting Butlins Resorts in Bognor Regis, Skegness and Minehead beginning April 7, will get the chance to see the new live show Nick Jr’s Rainforest Adventure.  The show features appearances by Dora the Explorer and Diego (Go, Diego, Go!), as well as Ming Ming the duckling from the Wonder Pets.  Nickelodeon UK has tapped theatrical production company Odd Post Entertainment to create and produce the show.

Toei Animation inks a toy licensing pact with Bandai Asia Co. for the animated series, Digimon Data Squad.  Under the deal, Bandai Asia acquires the rights to sell Digimon toys in Australia, including a digivice data link, 1.5-inch collectible figures and 3.5-inch lightning digivolving figures, available at retail now.
