Good morning. It’s Wednesday, February 18, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Dailymotion launches DM Kids as a stand-alone video web portal for kids and tweens offering a range of videos including animation, TV shows, music videos and original web series. DM Kids is broken down into two age specific areas, one for preschoolers K3-6 and the other for kids/tweens 7-12. At launch programming on DM Kids includes entertainment and educational content from Nickelodeon, Warner Bros. Universal Music, Hulu, On Networks, and Next New Networks, as well as web series such as Dragonfruit Studios’ Spook House Dave! and FitzRoy Media and Renegade Animation’s Funny Face. The first original web series to launch DM Kids is Ghost Town, from Sunny Boy Entertainment, which revolves around two teen ghost hunters that track down legendary ghosts.
Sorpresa! launched a branded kids block on Mega TV via DirecTV on Saturday, February 7 (10a-11:30a). This expands Sorpresa’s audience during this block by 1+ million Hispanic satellite subscribers thru DirecTV Mas in addition to Sorpresa’s existing 1.1 million cable subscribers. The 1.5 hour preschool programming block, which features preschool programs including Cubeez, Bali, Zumbers, Boom and Reds, and Telmo and Tula: Little Cooks will air Saturdays and Sundays at 10a.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Cartoon Network picks up Marvel Entertainment‘s new animated series Marvel Super Hero Squad (26×30). Set to premiere on the network in late 2009, Marvel Super Hero Squad brings together Marvel super heroes including Captain America, Silver Surfer, Hulk, Wolverine and Iron Man, as well as Thor and the Falcon, to go up against evil doers to protect Super Hero City. Produced by Marvel Animation and Film Roman, the series features the voices of Tom Kenny (Spongebob), Charlie Adler (Transformers 1 & 2), Steve Blum (Wolverine and the X-Men, Hulk Vs.) and Grey DeLisle (Fairly Oddparents and The Replacements). The series will also feature many special guest star voices-overs including Stan Lee as the voice of the Mayor of Super Hero City. Hasbro is the master toy licensee for Marvel Super Hero Squad.
The sixth movie featuring Mattel‘s Barbie is on the way as Universal Studios Home Entertainment prepares for the release of the new Barbie Presents Thumbelina on DVD on March 17, 2009. Bonus features on the DVD include the Flying Fairy Recycling Game and Thumbelina’s Green Thumb Challenge. Also on March 17, fans will be able to download Universal’s animated Barbie movies from select services including iTunes.
Symantec launched Norton Online Family in a free public beta, a new, web-based internet safety service designed to give parents tools to monitor their kids’ online lives by fostering communication. Rather than operate in “stealth mode,” the system’s search monitoring and reporting service facilitates feedback from and communication with the kids whose activity it is trying to monitor. The service, developed with input from a prominent council of expert advisors, is available for trial on both Macs and PCs.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Atlantyca Entertainment and the MoonScoop Group ink a deal with toy company Giochi Preziosi as the first European toy licensee for the new animated TV series Geronimo Stilton (26×22). Under the deal Giochi Preziosi has the rights to create toys based on the series, which is scheduled to premiere in Italy in fall 2009 and roll out across Europe beginning 2010.
Big Idea, Inc., expands the licensing program for VeggieTales with new deals including: Hallmark’s subsidiary DaySpring (social expressions); Bendon Publishing (activity books, sticker books and fun kids, workbooks with flash cards etc.); and The Northwest Company (home decor and bedding). The new VeggieTales products will be available at retail from spring 2009.
TOY FAIR 2009
Hasbro, Marvel Entertainment and Spider-Man Merchandising extend their licensing deal through 2017. The current deal runs through 2011. Under the newly lengthened royalty pact Hasbro will create toys and games based on new Marvel and Columbia Pictures theatrical releases and on Marvel’s portfolio of Super Hero brands, which of course includes Spider-Man, Iron Man, the Avengers, X-Men, Thor and Captain America. Additionally, Hasbro will continue to hold the global rights (excluding Japan) to develop products based on Marvel’s universe of characters and Spider-Man Merchandising’s film and TV properties in a range of toy and game categories, including action figures, role play and preschool toys, board games and puzzles. The new agreement covers both the “classic” comic book look of the characters as well as product lines inspired by TV and films. The license extension guarantees $100 million in royalties with the potential to earn up to an additional $140 million in royalty guarantees, contingent upon the release during the extension period of Marvel character based films that satisfy certain criteria.
Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) debuts the first line of toys based on Nick Jr.‘s Ni Hao, Kai-lan and Nickelodeon’s iCarly.
- The Ni Hao, Kai-lan toy program features a full range of products based on Kai-lan and her animal pals from toy manufacturers including: master toy partner Fisher Price will release the interactive I Feel Super Doll that shows Kai-lan’s emotions by responding to a child’s touch, as well as plush versions of the characters; Mega Brands block playsets; as well as products from LeapFrog, Vtech and new board games from Hasbro.
- Targeted to tweens, NVCP unveils plans for the first iCarly toys. Playmates Toys will introduce new products including collectible vinyl figures and electronic role play accessories based on the series, which will be available from 2009 domestically and 2010 internationally. Additionally, game leader Hasbro, will release a new board game based on the hit series.
BBC Worldwide enters into a multi-territory deal with Mega Brands for building playsets, from its Mega Bloks brand, based on the preschool series In the Night Garden. The new character-based line will follow initial launch plans in UK, France, Spain, Benelux, Nordic territories, Australia and Canada in fall/winter 2009. Mega Brands In the Night Garden excludes Japan, China and Korea. In the Night Garden airs daily on CBeebies in the UK, and on Treehouse in Canada.
