Cynopsis: Kids!

12/09/09

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 9, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

This week marks Sesame Workshop‘s launch of its first Sesame Street eBook collection (www.sesamestreet.org/ebooks) for young readers, several of which are available to read online for free (but not downloadable), with additional titles to be added in January 2010.  Impelsys, an electronic publisher, will be the exclusive licensee/seller of Sesame Street eBook content on the website and will make the content available via its iPublishCentral platform.  In spring 2010, Sesame Workshop and Impelsys will begin offering readers individual titles for purchase or an annual subscription where they can access a library of 100+ books. New titles will be added monthly.  But, the good news is that the plan also includes maintaining a rotating selection of five free eBooks on the website.  The Sesame Street titles will be available in one or more of three different formats: eBook; audio eBooks (look and listen)  select titles will feature Sesame Street character voices; and interactive eBooks (look and listen)  includes various reading/learning activities, these will be available from January.

The teen/tween-targeted online community Fanlala and Kabillion, the VOD and broadband site, have partnered to distribute Fanlala.com’s exclusive video content on its new VOD channel Teen Star Rule.  Fanlala will provide programming each month to the channel.  Additionally, Kabillion and Fanlala will co-create and co-finance original tween-targeted entertainment and celebrity-centric programming.  The deal will also see the partners involved in a series of cross-promotional online activities.  Kabillion’s Ad Sales Team will represent both the VOD channel and Fanlala.com’s advertising inventory.

David Maisel, Chairman of Marvel Studios, will step down from his position when Disney’s acquisition of Marvel is complete, per Variety.  Marvel shareholders are set to vote on the Disney/Marvel deal at a special meeting on December 31, 2009. Maisel, who joined Marvel as Studio President five years ago, helped Marvel Entertainment raise funds to finance production of its own feature films.  According to the report, after stepping down Maisel will continue to serve as an executive producer on three Marvel movies, Iron Man 2, Thor and The First Avenger: Captain America.  Kevin Feige, Marvel’s President/Production will oversee Marvel Studios, reporting directly to Disney Studios’ new Chairman, Rich Ross.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Appears that Elijah Wood and Robin Williams are looking to waddle their way to Happy Feet 2, the Warner Bros. sequel to the 2006 Village Roadshow animated feature, per THR.  The actors are both in negotiations to return as Mumble (Wood) and Ramon (Williams).  George Miller wrote the new script and will once again serve as director.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr. network premieres its first interstitial music series, Signing Time, today.  Designed to teach American Sign Language (ALS) to preschoolers, Signing Time debuts with three videos featuring Rachel Coleman that will air in regular rotation on the network 1-2 times each day.  Two additional videos will run exclusively on NickJr.com.  Coleman c0-created Signing Time, and has written all of the original songs featured in the series.  Over the last seven years, Coleman has also created Signing Time products including DVDs, music CDs, books, flashcards and a public TV series.

DQ Entertainment (DQE) enters into an exclusive broadcast deal with Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC TV) for the new 3D-CGI animated series and movie The Jungle Book (52 episodes, movie 1×60).  Under the deal ABC TV has the exclusive broadcast rights across the commonwealth of Australia.  The Jungle Book is being produced by DQE, and is a co-production with ZDF Group (Germany), TF-1 (France) and MoonScoop (France).  The series is slated to launch worldwide in Q3 2010.

Distributor TV Alliance inks a pact with Super RTL/Disney (Germany) that will make some of the kid broadcaster formats, such as Super Toy Club, Toggo United and Q-Boat, available to the international market for the first time.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Big Tent Entertainment continues to build the licensing program for Domo with new and expanded deals.  Big Tent inks new North American Domo property agreements with Nancy Sales Company (amusement plush, sport and novelty), A&A Global (vending machine novelty), and Bell Sports (sporting goods & accessories).  Additionally, Concept One (bags & accessories) expands its relationship to include men’s board shorts and beach towels, with Hot Properties Merchandising, Inc. (accessories) renewing their existing relationship with Big Tent and will also now include Domo coffee mugs respectively.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Ryuji Kochi is named VP of Toei Animation‘s office in Europe.  Kochi, who joined the company in Japan in 2000, will now be responsible for developing new business across Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:   Mention of this game in history is in the pages from India dating back to Gautama Buddha, in China, Korea, Japan, France and the Haida Native Americans of British Columbia as well as the state of California.  References to some refer to divination, gambling or simply an easy past time.  There is even a reference in the Bible referring to the “casting of lots”.  The game has been called Mikado, Jitter Whobble, Spellicans, Jack Straws, Chien Tung and the Jonchets.  What is this common classic game called today?  PICK UP STICKS (or STIX)  Kudos to: Chris Byrne-TimeToPlayMag.com/NY; Ben Taylor-Play-Doh Hasbro/Pawtucket; Steve Granat & Cynde Clark-Bupkis Ent/Tarzana; Katharine Heintz, PhD-Santa Clara University; Ratana Therakulsathit-Mattel/El Segundo; Candace Irving-Candace Irving & Assoc

Today’s Trivia Question:  Launched in 1964 by Hasbro, the toy came with multiple accessories, playsets and a complex background story, all lending to the authenticity of the character.  This toy was “the good guy” while the “bad guy” was known as the Cobra Command.  What was (and is) the generic name for this line of toys?   (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
