Cynopsis: DIGITAL
12/09/09
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, December 9, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Time Inc., Conde Nast, the Hearst Corp., Meredith and News Corp. officially announced their new venture to develop open technology standards to present their publications on the web, e-readers, phones and other digital devices. The as-yet-unnamed consortium is out to design a storefront as well as a multiplatform software suite and user interface that can be used to distribute magazines, newspapers, books and other content across devices. The companies hope that by developing a standard platform, device makers and advertisers can be more quickly brought into the fold to help monetize both traditional publications and newer web-based blogs and digital graphic novels. All of this really gets exciting when you look forward a bit to the next generation of tablet computers. Time and Wonderfactory have put together an online demo to showcase what the digital Sports Illustrated might look like.
Qualcomm’s Flo TV has signed the last of the 4 major network providers, adding Disney Channel and ABC to its now 17-channel subscription mobile programming service available through multiple carriers. The mobilized feed of ABC includes ABC primetime shows, select content from ABC Family, SOAPnet, ABC News and ABC Entertainment. The Disney Channel offering is a virtual simulcast.
ABC.com is showing its yuletide spirit adding a number of holiday specials to its full episode player. A Charlie Brown Christmas and the new animated special Disney Prep & Landing will be featured from today, then look for Oprah’s “Christmas at the White House” and Jennifer Hudson’s “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” specials next week.
TheWB.com is celebrating “Chrismukkah” with holiday-themed episodes from classic favorites, including “The O.C.,” “Friends” and “Gilmore Girls,” among others.
Cocina is Univision Interactive Media‘s newest online vertical devoted to cooking. The web and mobile site features recipes from around the world, social features and video cooking tips from celebrity chefs featured on Univision, TeleFutura and Galavision shows. An embeddable widget is also on the way allowing users to share recipes on their blogs and social networking profiles.

As part of its steady push to cover creative folks in the digital space, the WGA East has signed iLariious – its first iPhone app developer – as a signatory. This means that jokes written for apps such as daily joke distribution app “This Just In” now count toward guild minimums when qualifying for pension and health benefits. (The WGA East was able to secure basic payments for streaming and downloading of full episodes during its most recent 3-year deal with the studios, but original made-for-the-web (or iPhone in this case) fare only counts toward pension and health). WGAE Executive Director Lowell Peterson, who is the process of organizing a digital job training seminar for members, admits that it is early days for such platforms. But he doesn’t think real money is far off for the space. “We know the models are not yet set, but we would like to see creators have a seat at the table when they are set,” he noted. A total of 20 web studios have now become WGAE digital signatories.
Will Ferrell’s comedy video site Funny Or Die is taking to the road at the American Cinematheque on Friday night with a “live” presentation featuring classic clips, premiere videos and even a few celebrity guests. Tickets are $10 and Funny or Die says proceeds go toward helping to maintain the historic Egyptian Theater.
Live web streaming platform UStream has launched its own “celebrity” reality show, “Ustream All Access,” meant to give an intimate look at the lives of a selection of celebrities. Snoop Dogg is under the microscope this week as he kicks off the release of his latest album. The series premiered last week with a behind-the-scenes look at Will.i.am and the Black Eyed Peas at the Grammy Nominations.

A group of large service providers and some of the world’s largest enterprises have banded together to help define how telco-provided cloud services should be delivered. Organized by industry group TM Forum, the goal is to pull together both service providers and technology providers to work on problems and remove barriers related to launching scalable, global cloud-based services. The Enterprise Cloud Buyers Council (ECBC), led by Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Deutsche Bank, are heading up the enterprise side. Alcatel-Lucent, Amdocs, AT&T, BT, CA, Cisco, EMC, HP, IBM, Microsoft, Nokia Siemens Networks, Telecom Italia and Telstra have also agreed to join the program.
Facebook has decided to shut down its controversial Beacon advertising program and has decided to settle a class action lawsuit launched to address privacy violations breached by the program. The settlement provides no compensation directly to users, but the company has set up a $9.5 million fund that will go to support online privacy, safety and security issues. Facebook users can choose to opt out of the settlement if they wish to pursue further legal action against Facebook related to the Beacon program.
Broadband video platform provider Brightcove has formed a strategic alliance with web video distribution and analytics firm TubeMogul. TubeMogul is powering Brightcove’s newly revamped video analytics suite that allows publishers to drill down and measure details such as the geographic make up of its audience, average audience viewing times and a wealth of demographic data. The partnership also provides a framework for joint marketing and business development activities including promotions for Brightcove’s new $99/month Express product line targeting the more than 125,000 video producers who already use TubeMogul’s free video analytics.

NPR has redesigned and expanded the mobile version of NPR.org for users of web-enabled devices. Powered by Conmio, enhancements include upgraded audio and a new dynamic station search feature; search for stations by zip code, call letters, city or state then flag multiple “favorite” stations. NPR is preparing to launch a NPR News app for Android. Modeled on many of the attributes of the NPR News app for iPhone and iPod Touch, it will feature live streaming from station members in addition to a new “backgrounding” feature, enabling users to listen to audio and then toggle between applications as the audio is playing.
Perhaps on the defensive from the onslaught of Verizon commercials, AT&T has launched a crowdsourcing app dubbed “Mark the Spot,” enabling iPhone customers to provide feedback on AT&T network performance issues in specific locations. Simply press a button to indicate the nature of the service issue, and add notes to describe the situation if desired.
Heavenspot and its sister company AppWagon introduced a new Ziggy Marley app for the iPhone, providing tools to mix tracks, break beats and create your own dub sounds. The “Jackpot Mix” function allow users to shake the handset to randomly mix different song parts while “DJ for Me” picks a track and then randomly remixes Ziggy’s interchangeable reggae riffs.
Saul Hansell, Tech Reporter and Editor for The New York Times, has joined AOL as one of the first employees of Seed, the newly spun off portal’s new content management platform. Saul will be reporting to Mike Rich, SVP of AOL Entertainment.
Planet Green has appointed Lynn Sadofsky as Director of Development/Executive Producer and promoted Leigh Ashurst to Director of Development and Production. Lynn will be based in New York while Leigh will stay in Silver Spring, MD and both will report to Jeff Hasler, SVP/Production and Development.

News scholars have long argued that the nation’s leading papers set the agenda for the media at large by choosing to cover some topics and ignoring others. Expect that trend to accelerate. Living Stories is a new news offering from Google powered by the NY Times and the Washington Post, grouping news stories, editorials, photos, videos and other resources by topic. Stories relating to defining topics such as the health care reform debate or The Politics of Global Warming are cataloged and updated as they become available. Click on a topic to see a timeline of when major news broke or to organize content by format. As you navigate around stories, you actually stay on a single topic page, making for less back and forth. All in all, the interface makes for a far more intelligent way to follow news online. Thankfully, Google isn’t just reserving this for the big boys. This current page is just a prototype for the software that the company is making available for free to any publisher who wants to use it. We can see news gatherers using the tools to aggregate complementary coverage around specific genres of news.
