On Monday night, news broke that General Electric and Vivendi SA reached a price agreement of $5.8 billion for the 20% stake in NBC Universal held by Vivendi. Acquiring this 20% portion would allow GE to sell 51% of NBCU to Comcast. According to a report on CNBC yesterday, the pending deal between GE and Comcast is expected to come this Thursday, though could be stalled until early next week. Comcast would contribute $4 billion to $6 billion in cash and slide over its cable networks to NBCU, thus establishing a new joint venture between GE and Comcast that is 51% controlled by Philadelphia-based Comcast.

ABC News’ Jon Banner, executive producer of World News with Charles Gibson announced yesterday Charlie Gibson’s last day as anchor of World News will be December 18. During his final week as anchor, ABC News will honor Gibson with a retrospective of notable stories and interviews covered by Gibson over the last thirty years. Diane Sawyer will officially become the lead anchor of World News in January though will debut in the anchor chair on December 21 and 22 prior to the holiday break. ABC News has not yet announced who will replace Sawyer on Good Morning America.

CBS shelved its frosh medical drama Three Rivers on Monday, taking it off the schedule effective immediately. CBS did say it will complete production on all previously ordered 13 episodes, though a return date for remaining episodes was not announced. Since September, Three Rivers has averaged 8.4 million viewers though viewership has steadily declined. In its Sunday night time slot, CBS will replace Three Rivers with encores of Cold Case, Criminal Minds and NCIS: Los Angeles.

NBC’s 12th annual holiday special, Christmas in Rockefeller Center, scheduled for tonight at 8p, may not air after all. The National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians (NABET-CWA) may pull the plug on the show featuring the lighting of the famous Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center, as the union is angry about NBC’s refusal to negotiate a new contract with them. NABET-CWA’s previous contract expired in March and according to the union, there has been little progress between the two entities involving talks over the last year. The union launched a website yesterday, in an effort to air their disagreements with NBC at NBCStoleChristmas.com. NBC could not be reached for comment.
