Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, December 17, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  

The Walt Disney Company is forming a joint venture with Russian broadcaster Media-One Holdings Ltd., to launch at Disney-branded free-to-air national TV channel in Russia in 2009.  Offering a line-up of kid and family programming as well as original Russian programming, the new entertainment channel will bow on 30 O & O Media-One stations throughout Russia.  In return for a 49% stake in the joint venture, Disney will invest cash and provide programming and marketing expertise and content acquisition support.  Media-One, the majority shareholder in the co-venture, will provide its knowledge and operational experience in the Russian market.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Bakugan Battle Brawlers is set to head to the big screen as part of a newly inked development deal between Spin Master Ltd. and Universal Pictures.  Under the pact, Universal and Stuber Productions (Role Models) will produce a film based on the game, toy line and anime series Bakugan Battle Brawlers.  The anime series Bakugan Battle Brawlers airs in the US on Cartoon Network.  Spin Master’s Ronnen Harary is producing the film along with Scott Stuber from Stuber Productions.  Universal’s Donna Langley and Jeff Kirschenbaum are overseeing the movie, with Stuber’s Jon Mone, who brought the project to the company, executive producing.

Sony Pictures Animation enters into a first look production pact with Ellen Goldsmith-Vein’s The Gotham Group, per Variety.  This is the first such deal for Sony Pictures Animation.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Sprout, the 24/7 preschool kids and parent targeted offering on TV, on-demand and online, debuts Sprout Preschool Musical … On a Stick, on Christmas Eve, December 24 at 5:30p.  Set inside a pop-up book, the 30-minute musical features all of Sprout’s on-air talent (as stick puppets) as they make their way through a holiday snowstorm to The Sprout Sharing Show Theater in time for the Very Very Extraordinary, Merry Musical Sproutacular.  The show is followed at 6p about by the network’s 11-hour Snooze-A-Thon, which we told you about last week.  More about the special including songs and activities (make your own puppet on a stick) coloring pages, go to www.sproutonline.com.

Decode Enterprises signs two deals for Kid vs Kat (52×11/26×22), an animated series produced by Studio B Productions in association YTV Canada and Jetix Europe.  Acquiring the series are Nickelodeon South East Asia and ABC (Australia).  Targeted to K6-11, Kid Vs Kat will also air on YTV (Canada), Jetix Europe and Jetix US.

Bandai Entertainment Inc. announced today that it will be part of the simultaneous broadcast of the anime series Kurokami (The Animation) from animation studio Sunrise, which will be broadcast in Japan on TV Asahi at 2:40a on January 8, in the US on ImaginAsian TV (IATV) on January 8 at 8p, and in Korea on January 9 at 10p on AniBOX.  In a first, Bandai is dubbing the US version in English simultaneous to the Japanese production of the series.  The series is not specifically aimed at kids.  Following its US broadcast, Bandai Entertainment will release Kurokami on DVD in 2009.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

All3Media International promotes Maartje Horchner to Head of Acquisitions.  Horchner, who had been Acquisitions Executive, will be looking to establish new producer partnerships in the UK and international, while also expanding existing relationships with a range of production companies and third part indies.

RATINGS

Nickelodeon ends the year 2008 setting several records, including being Nick’s most watched year ever among Total Viewers P2+ (average 2.2 million) in total day, according to Nielsen Media Research (12/31/07-12/14/08), as well as its most watched year with K2-11 (1.2 million) in total day since 2006, and similarly with K2-5 in total day since 2004.  Nickelodeon is the top network for 2008 among K2-11, K6-11 (674,000) and Tweens 9-14 (498,000).  As far as preschoolers, Nick is the top ad-supported TV channel among K2-5 (545,000) in total day.  Nick’s other networks also had bests for the year: The N earned its highest-rated year in 2008 with its core audience of Teens 12-17, up vs. last year by +25%; Nicktoons Network also hit an all time best in its history with K6-11 up by +33% and Total Viewers up +22%.

Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group proclaimed its dominance in the kids and family digital space claiming a monthly average of 131 million visits and an aggregate 2.4 billion minutes spent at the close of 2008, sourcing comScore numbers. Several of the group’s sites set traffic records this year including Nick.com, Neopets, NickJr.com, iCarly.com, Addicting Games, Shockwave and The-N sites (The-N.com and Quizilla.com)

Radio Disney winds down 2008 delivering cumes of 31+ million listeners K6+ and upwards of 6.5 million listeners K6-11 during the radio network’s programming day (Mondays-Sundays 6a-12a). Additionally, Radio Disney earned its best ratings for daytime (Mondays-Sundays 6a-7p) with its core listeners K6-11 since 2005, which is also up +10% vs. last year.
