12/16/09

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, December 16, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Comcast flipped the switch on its TV Everywhere “Fancast Xfinity TV” service, now being promoted on the MSO’s Fancast.com online video portal. Comcast cable and internet customers in good standing (you must subscribe to both) can use the site’s authentication service to view full-length episodes of shows they receive through their cable subscriptions. The interface includes access to some 2,000 hours of programming from a total of 30 networks, including uncut movies and shows such as HBO’s The Sopranos. Comcast customers who don’t subscribe to the cable modem service will be able access the shows in the near future, according the company. A Fancast Xfinity mobile service and parental controls enabling blocking of forthcoming adult-oriented Cinemax content is also on the way.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Live online video platform Qik launched a new desktop app Qik-in-Touch in private beta that allows users to stream, organize and edit live video from friends and family on Windows, Mac and Linux-based computers. Not enough has been done in terms of allowing users to manipulate live video streams, so this is a welcome development. Qik was one of the first developers to release an iPhone app that allows you to shoot and share live video from the 3GS iPhone (in non-real time.) It connects via WiFi or via AT&T’s much maligned 3G network and will alert your friends when you have a new stream to share via Twitter. UStream beat Qik to the punch earlier this month when Apple approved a version of its software that streams live from the phone to multiple users with cool features like live polling. But Qik’s version should be forthcoming and will likely be worth waiting for. One feature that is particularly intriguing on the app submitted to the App Store for approval is the ability to share the location you’re shooting from. The interface allow the producer to determine at what level you want to share this info at, but one option is to allow friends and fans to utilize GPS to pinpoint your exact location.
