08/05/09

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, August 5, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

It’s never been more nice to have friends in high places. North Korean leader Kim Jong Il has issued a “special pardon” to jailed Current TV reporters Laura Ling and Euna Lee after protracted negotiations that culminated in a visit by former president Bill Clinton, 24 hours before their release. The Ling and Lee families issued a joint statement on their website thanking President Obama, Secretary Clinton and the U.S. State Dept. for their efforts. Laura and Euna were on assignment along the Chinese border investigating the plight of North Korean refugees and human trafficking victims when they were picked up by North Korean military agents nearly 5 months ago. The two were convicted of trespassing in a closed trial last month and sentenced to 12 years of hard labor.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Much of the digital media industry remains divided over the use of traditional TV spots on digital platforms. That debate is about to further heat up. A new digital ad platform from ShortTail Media, run by former CNN executive David Payne, launches a 4-week beta trial this week that will make it even easier to repurpose 30-second spots. The Digital 30 interface launches video commercials over search result pages in a 16×9 video player, before taking the user to the premium content site. The platform also includes a wealth of social media integrations. Adobe Creative Suite, R2C Group and Special Ops Media are the first beta clients for campaigns that will run across Weather.com, Entertainment Weekly’s EW.com, Reuters.com, and the Wall Street Journal Digital Network during the next four weeks.

Seattle-based online data exchange BlueKai has launched the BlueKai Certification Program enabling agencies and marketers to define a standard in-market audience profile using BlueKai data, while reaching audiences using their media partners. Participants can share the data plan with selected ad networks, portals or publishers, who will then submit one proposal that incorporates both data and media costs. The program also provides a “seal of quality” measure to assure marketers that their online campaigns are powered by the data they’ve defined.

One True Media’ SpotMixer video creation and distribution service completed a major update baking in a number of do-it-yourself video advertising solutions. New features include integration with video ad network SpotXchange and an campaign management component enabling businesses to target customers by location, gender, income level and age.

Tivo is more than just a pretty interface and overbuilder RCN has just completed an integration agreement with the company to offer its branded DVR services and more across its footprint of homes. Expected to launch in early 2010, RCN customers who subscribe to the Tivo service will be able access RCN’s full VOD library as well as broadband shows and other digital content distributed thorough the Tivo platform, including Amazon’s Video On Demand titles, Photobucket, and RealNetwork’s Rhapsody music service. RCN also reported an increase in total revenue for Q2 to $192 million, up from $184 million during Q2 of ’08.

Now the Pentagon is ordering a review of the use of social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook citing security concerns, reports Reuters.

A federal judge has ruled that most of the new restrictions on lawyer advertising adopted by the Louisiana Supreme Court constitute as unconstitutional restrictions on freedom of speech. Certain other components of the new Louisiana lawyer advertising regulations were upheld, including restrictions on ads that promise results, portray a judge or jury or contain a celebrity endorsement.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

The European Commission released a digital competitiveness report yesterday claiming it has regained its lead over the U.S. in broadband connectivity. The report found that 56% of Europeans now regularly use the internet – 80% of them via a high-speed connection, up dramatically from 2004 when only one third of users did so. About 23% of European homes and businesses have fixed-line broadband access, compared to 20% for the U.S. However the report warns that Europe is at risk of losing its edge as it lags behind Japan and South Korea in super high speed fiber-to-the-home connections and the U.S. in web interactivity and social networking. The Commission is about to launch a public online consultation on nine key areas concerning Europe’s future ICT and media policies.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

The new $1 PhoneFace speed dial app for the iPhone from Electric Pocket integrates with Twitter to retrieve profile photos of your friends. The idea is to keep your address book fresh, as many folks change their profile photos with new avatars weekly. When you want to call, text, or email someone in your circle, flick through your catalog of profile pics instead of just their saved photos.

Amazon launched a version of its free mobile shopping app for the Android mobile OS that allows users to snap a photo of what they want to buy or scan a barcode of the item to look for product matches on the Amazon site. The app is also available for the iPhone and BlackBerry.

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM HISTORY

One of the greatest adventures in history, relived in the present.

For Your Emmy® Consideration

Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program

Expedition Africa: Stanley & Livingstone

Equipped with just a compass and basic maps, four modern day explorers attempt to retrace one of the toughest expeditions of all time: Henry Morton Stanley’s search across the wilds of Tanzania to find Dr. Livingstone.

As visually epic as the historic journey itself.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Chris Anderson’s BookTour.com underwent a homepage makeover featuring a cleaner look and a more visual layout. BookTour is a free online directory spotlighting readings and other literary happenings of your favorite authors. It tracks events by author and geographical area and updates members with weekly email blasts of who’s reading in your local area. The site also syndicates its data to third party sites and blogs for free such as Amazon’s individual author pages. (Here’s the one for the prolific Neil Gaiman.) Relying on the real world experience of founders Chris Anderson, Editor of Wired and author of The Long Tail and Free; Kevin Smokler, Editor of Bookmark Now; and Adam Goldstein, computer whiz and author of several of the Missing Manual books, BookTour has built some useful tools for authors and publicists. TourBuilder generates suggested tour itineraries based on past successes. EventMinion digests indie author’s tour data and adds it to the BookTour database for the fee of $1/event. In the “Long Tail” world of niche audiences and readers, authors will be responsible for generating their own followings and BookTour offers some intelligent solutions.

Correction: Watercooler did not launch a social add on for CBSSports.com’s Fantasy Football offering. Rather, Watercooler launched its own Fantasy Football offering, and CBSSports.com provides a draft kit and breaking news for the app. We apologize for the confusion.
