Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 30, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
MTV Networks has entered into an agreement to purchase the remaining interest in its joint venture MTV Japan from private equity firm H&Q Asia Pacific, making MTVN the sole owner of the network. MTVN plans to combine MTV Japan with its other ventures in the market, Nickelodeon and Flux, to establish a single business entity. Prior to this agreement, MTVN held a minority stake in MTV Japan. The acquisition, MTVN’s biggest in the Asia-Pacific region, is part of a strategy to drive its international growth both Japan and the region. MTV Japan will continue to be led by President/CEO Yu Sasamoto. Sasamoto will report to Peter Bullard, EVP/Managing Director, Viacom International Japan, who in turn till oversee the newly combined operation.
ReelTime Rental’s, Inc. has entered into an agreement with PorchLight Entertainment under which PorchLight’s family and kid’s movies and TV programs, as well as some content from its non-fiction and music division, will be offered via ReelTime Rental’s online broadband network, on a non-exclusive basis. A number of the kid’s properties initially offered on ReelTimeTV.net will make their way to ReelTime Kids when the online kid’s channel is launched in 2007. ReelTime will launch www.reeltime.com the second week of September.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Cartoon Network has picked up the exclusive rights to Pokemon: Battle Frontier, the 9th season of in the Pokemon series. The new season kicks off Saturday, September 9, at 9a with a one-hour episode. Pokemon: Battle Frontier will then air regularly Saturday mornings at 9:30a.
Disney Channel’s preschool programming block Playhouse Disney will strip its series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse beginning Monday, September 18, at 8:30a. Produced by Disney Television Animation, Mickey Mouse House Clubhouse will also continue to air on weekends at 9a and 9:30a. Playhouse Disney welcomes the series to the block with a week-long programming event that will Mickey’s Clubhouse friends, Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Daisy, ending the week with a new episode featuring Pluto on Friday, September 22 at 8:30a.
MARKETING/LICENSING
MGA Games has introduced Miuchiz (pronounced Me-You-Cheese), a new product line featuring digital characters that can be played with online and off using a handheld unit. The Miuchiz handheld device has an LCD color display, infrared and motion sensor abilities and can connect to a PC through a USB port, which allows players to go online into a real-time virtual world and play multiplayer 3D games, win virtual currency, chat with other players, and buy and sell items. The Miuchiz games also feature parental controls. This fall MGA Games will launch three Miuchiz styles: a Bratz targeted to girls; for boys the battle centric Monsterz; and Pawz, a virtual pet (dogs and cats) for everyone. Each character version is available separately ($29.99 each), which also includes a one-year subscription to the Planet Mion online component. MGA Games is a unit of MGA Entertainment. EXECUTIVE MOVES
Liberty Media Corp. has done some restructuring of its divisions by merging its Starz Entertainment Group with its most recent acquisition, IDT Entertainment, to establish the new company, Starz, LLC, which will produce and distribute live-action and animated content. Under the new structure, Starz, LLC will be an umbrella company to IDT Entertainment, which has been renamed Starz Media, and Starz Entertainment Group which becomes Starz Entertainment. The new Starz, LLC will produce live-action and animated content including feature films, TV series, specials and shorts that it will distribute, domestically and internationally, via all platforms including, movie theaters, DVDs, cable, satellite, broadcast TV, and the internet. Robert B. Clasen will serve as Chairman/CEO of both, Starz Media and Starz Entertainment, as well as Starz, LLC. Additionally, William D. Myers has been appointed President/COO, Starz Entertainment. While many units in the new Starz, LLC will be branded with the Starz name, the better-known brands including Anchor Bay, Encore, Film Roman, Manga and Vongo will keep their current identities.
The Board of Directors of Majesco Entertainment Company has named Jesse Sutton as Interim CEO and member of the Board of Directors, while the company continues its search for a permanent CEO/Chairman. The role of Interim CEO and Chairman of the Board had previously been filled by Morris Sutton, who will return to his role as Chairman Emeritus, and focus his energies on the company’s sales and distribution efforts. He will no longer serve on the Company’s Board. Prior to this Jesse Sutton was for 10 years President of Majesco.
