After much speculation on her next on-air project, Paula Abdul was tapped by VH1 to host the live concert program, VH1 Divas. Female artists scheduled to perform during the live telecast on September 17 at 9p include Jordin Sparks, Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Miley Cyrus. The event will feature the artists performing together at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, NY as well as other presenters and special guests. Similar to previous specials, this VH1 Divas will raise money for the non-profit organization, VH1 Save The Music Foundation whose mission is to restore instrumental music education in American public schools and stressing the importance of music as part of a child’s education.

HBO brings back its comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm for a seventh season starting September 20 at 9p followed by the network’s new comedy series Bored to Death. Curb Your Enthusiasm is executive produced and headlined by Larry David (Seinfeld co-creator) playing himself along with other real-life celebrities playing themselves with episodes improvised by the actors. Special guest stars this season include Ted Danson, Bob Einstein, Vivica A. Fox, Richard Lewis, Rosie O’Donnell among others plus the cast of Seinfeld: Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Michael Richards.

Recent Premiere/Finale Episode Results:

  • Last Thursday at 9p, Investigation Discovery (ID) attracted 227,000 A25-54 viewers and 419,000 total viewers for its season premiere of Deadly Women.
  • Animal Planet’s second season finale of Whale Wars last Friday at 9p delivered 807,000 A25-54 viewers, 375,000 W25-54 and 432,000 M25-54 viewers.
  • Bravo’s The Rachel Zoe Project made its second season debut on Monday at 10p posting a +27% gain in A18-49 viewers at 516,000 in addition to 685,000 total viewers.
  • Also on Monday, ABC Family aired the mid-season finale of Make It or Break It at 9p, tallying 749,000 and a 1.1 rating among A18-34 and 1.1 million and a 0.8 rating among A18-49. The episode also delivered 2.4 million total viewers.

Outcast (formerly Fuelcast), the digital media company reaching consumers as they fuel up their vehicles, made new content deals with CBS, CNET and HGTV. Currently with its joint venture with PumpTop TV, Outcast reaches more than 20 million consumers monthly through 12,600 hi-def large screens across 15 markets.

This Labor Day Weekend, Spike TV will air the 10-part miniseries Band of Brothers in primetime beginning September 5 from 7p-11p; on September 6 from 7p-1130p; and concluding on September 7 from 6p-12a. The award-winning World War II series was originally produced for HBO and executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.

As part of its recent upfront strategy, National Geographic Channel took DNA samples from more than 600 advertising professionals working at top agencies in the US including Starcom, MediaEdge, Zenith and OMD. The promotion was also tied to the network’s upcoming special, The Human Family Tree debuting this Sunday at 9p, where 200 random neighbors living in Queens, NY had their DNA tested through the Genographic Project, a five-year research study examining the ancient migration routes of all humanity. Among the results from the advertising pros, we learn 9% of the women shared an ancestor with Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert while 40% of the men shared an ancestor with U2’s Bono.

The CW Network, Alloy Media + Marketing and the American Red Cross are teaming to host blood drives in 230+ high schools and college campuses nationwide to help save lives as well as to promote the series premiere of The Vampire Diaries. The “Starve a Vampire. Donate Blood.” campaign began this week and will carry on for five weeks, encouraging young people to donate blood through the American Red Cross. At each school blood drive, specially branded The Vampire Diaries materials will be one hand as well as themed refreshment stands and footage from the show playing on TV monitors. Every student participating will receive branded promotional items. The Vampire Diaries premieres on The CW September 10 at 8p.

CMT renewed the singing competition show The Singing Bee for a second season with double the number of episodes over this season. Twenty new episodes will premiere in January 2010 with Melissa Peterman also returning as host. Production starts in November from The Gurin Company and JUMA Entertainment.

A new documentary film from RJ Cutler, The September Issue, about Anna Wintour and Vogue magazine, opens in theatres this Friday and nationwide on September 11th.  I know you’re thinking we don’t usually report on documentaries, and even less often on films, but this is particularly noteworthy because this is RJ’s first foray into a theatrical film.  His extensive background in television production for the past decade (30 Days, Freshman Diaries, American Candidate, The War Room, Black. White., Flip That House and numerous others) has lead him to producing this film.  Go see it – if it’s anywhere as good as some of his television series, you’ll be glad you did.
