Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 26, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
CBBC orders up another new series with Junior MasterChef (13×60). Based on Shine Entertainment‘s MasterChef, the kid version of the British cooking competition series will also be produced by Shine and is set to air on CBBC in winter 2009/10. CBBC decided to pick up Junior MasterChef based on the success of the special Children in Need episode. The 13-part series will include eight heats, during which the kids will be asked to cook a two course meal, followed by two quarter-finals, two semis and a final cook-off. The producers are looking for K9-12 with a passion for cooking to take part in Junior MasterChef, so if that describes someone you know go to www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc or www.masterchef.tv for more information … applications are due by September 30.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Rachel York will take on the role of the evil puppy-hating Cruella de Vil in the national tour of The 101 Dalmatians Musical, which is based on Dodie Smith’s 1956 story, per Playbill. York has appeared on Broadway in Les Miserables, Victor/Victoria and City of Angels, among other shows. Directed by Jerry Zaks, the musical features a book by BT McNicholl, music by Dennis DeYoung (STYX) and lyrics co-written by McNicholl and DeYoung. Produced by Magic Arts & Entertainment/Tix Productions, Troika Entertainment, and Luis Alvarez, the national tour kicks off in Minneapolis on October 13.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Production begins this week on Shalom Sesame in Israel (12 episodes). Designed to provide a look at Israeli life, Jewish culture and tradition to American kids/families, the new series will combine studio and live segments featuring Muppets and kids and a range of American and Israeli celebrities including actress/singer Anneliese van der Pol (That’s So Raven, Beauty and the Beast), Debra Messing, Achinoam Nini, Mira Awad, Jake Gyllenhaal, Christina Applegate, Greg Kinnear among others. Co-produced by Sesame Workshop and Channel Hop! (Israel), Shalom Sesame will be available for digital distribution worldwide in 2010. Additionally, Sesame Workshop is simultaneously producing 40 new episodes of Rechov Sumsum in Hebrew and Arabic, which will premiere on Channel Hop! in December 2009.
Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Jennifer Stone (Wizards of Waverly Place) and Moises Arias (Hannah Montana) will star in a special two-part story of Phineas and Ferb, Phineas and Ferb’s Quantum Boogaloo, which premieres Monday, September 21 8p on Disney XD.
TV-Loonland acquires the distribution rights to the preschool animated series WordWorld for TV, home entertainment and new media across Western and Eastern Europe including Russia, Africa and South Africa and Israel. Designed as a multimedia property to help kids learn English, WordWorld was created by Don Moody. TV-Loonland will offer WordWorld at Mipcom in October with formats including 74×11, 8 music clips and 52 Build-a-Word Songs. The series debuted in the US on PBS Kids in fall 2007 and now airs in 22 countries and has been adapted into French and Cantonese.
Washington State-based toy/game start-up Smith & Tinker received $29 million in funding from a group of tech and game investors including Paul Allen’s Vulcan Capital, Alsop Louie Partners, Foundry Group, Leo Capital Holdings and DCM, which led the round. One of the company’s first creations is Nanovor, a hybrid targeted at boys which links online and offline play. A proprietary handheld which extends the play experience offline, dubbed the Nanoscope, is due to be released starting in October. Smith & Tinker plans to build Nanovor into a full scope entertainment franchise, including weekly animated webisodes, comics, a graphic novel, and field guide.

Corus Television partners with Lego Canada for the launch of a new K6-12 targeted videogame campaign Bionicle Glatorian Legends. For six weeks, beginning August 31, the Bionicle Glatorian Legends campaign will feature two new videogames on YTV.com, Prepare for Battle and Arena Magna. Prepare for Battle uses “augmented reality technology”, which allows gamers to combine real world and computer-generated content by using a web cam with flash animation a printed marker (for this game) is also needed in order to activate the program and recognize the user. Sound confusing? Well, viewers can learn more about playing these games and how to activate the program during Crunch, YTV’s Saturday morning programming block, on August 29 at 9p during which Andy (the Crunch host) will demonstrate the games.
Walmart will offer Miley Cyrus‘ new album, The Time of Our Lives, exclusively from August 31, 2009 at its stores and on Walmart.com. Released by Hollywood Records, the new album features seven tracks. Additionally, under another exclusive deal Walmart will launch Miley Cyrus & Max Azria, the new apparel line from Cyrus and BCBGMAXAZRIAGROUP, next month at its stores and online. Walmart is also the sponsor of the Miley Cyrus North American Tour.
CPLG Canada inks two new license deals for Jim Benton’s It’s Happy Bunny, with new product set to be available in 2010. The new licensees are Paris Geneve (active wear, junior ladies sleepwear) and PS Brands/Planet Sox (socks, slipper socks, sunglasses and watches).
RATINGS
Nick at Nite‘s launched its new original stop-motion animated series, Glenn Martin, DDS, last week as new episodes debuting Monday-Thursday, August 17-20 at 8p, with 2.6 million Total Viewers P2+ tuning in each night. Throughout the premiere week, Glenn Martin, DDS held 89% of its lead-in rating, which was The Penguins of Madagascar, among K2-11 and 91% with Total Viewers P2+. The week of premiere’s earned Nick at Nite increases over the like time periods last year among K6-11 (+15%) and Tweens 9-14 (+78%).
Cartoon Network launched two new live-action series in its new Wednesday programming block (8-10p) on August 19 to ratings increases versus their respective time periods last year:
- The premiere of Dude, What Would Happen (8:30p) lifted ratings among K6-11 (+35%) and with Tweens 9-14 (104%). The debut was particularly strong with Boys 6-11 (33%) and Boys 9-14 (147%).
- The debut of Bobb’e Says (8p) was up a bit among K6-11 (1%) and Tweens 9-14 (3%), and with Boys 9-14 (21%).
- Overall the new Wednesday tw0-hour block was up last week versus the prior four weeks among K2-11 (35%), K6-11 (31%) and Tweens 9-14 (32%), including a strong showing with Boys 2-11 (35%), Boys 6-11 (34%) and Boys 9-14 (42%).
